INDIANAPOLIS — Parents of two girls who attend Horizon Christian School on Indianapolis’ northeast side say their daughters are being bullied and threatened because of the color of their skin.Alexander Wortham realized something was happening when his daughter, Imani, started acting strange, asking to stay home from school more often than a typical teen girl.He and Dominique Duncan soon found out that their two high school daughters were being bullied.“Silence is killing our young people," Wortham said. "People not dealing with the issue. Not dealing with the problem and I think for us, as parents, enough is enough."Duncan agreed.“Very let down as a parent. Very let down,” Duncan said.Imani and her friend, LaShanti, say a male student started bullying them at school saying things like “If the school ever gets shot up, you’ll be the first one to get shot.”“He pointed to me personally, he looked me in the eye,” Imani said.“He said he would sell me into slavery if I didn’t do what he said and then he started making little jingles about slavery,” LaShanti said.According to an email the parents received from a school administrator, the school suspended the student last week after the girls’ parents brought the issue to the administration’s attention. But that student was allowed to return to class on Monday.The girls felt so uncomfortable, they both decided to stay home this week.“We should be able to go to school and not feel threatened, scared or having to be on edge the whole time,” Imani said.Both parents say they want the school to create more concrete policy changes on bullying. They both suggested an all-school assembly or bringing experts in to discuss race relations and bullying.The Horizon Christian School principal denied to comment on the situation, saying it’s against school policy to discuss students without permission from all parents involved.  1900

Interim security clearances for White House aides, including Jared Kushner, were downgraded last week after chief of staff John Kelly stipulated new changes to how officials access the nation's secrets, according to sources familiar with the matter.Aides who previously operated on "top secret" interim clearances saw their access changed to "secret," a classification for less sensitive material.In a February 16 memo, Kelly stated that White House officials who have been operating on interim clearances since last June would have their temporary clearances discontinued.That included Kushner, the President's son-in-law and senior adviser. INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Eight missing children were rescued in a five-day rescue operation in the Indianapolis area, according to federal authorities.The children saved in "Operation Homecoming" are between the ages of 6 and 17 years old, according to a press release from the U.S. Marshals Service’s Southern District of Indiana.Authorities said the children "were considered to be some of the most at-risk and challenging recovery cases in the area, based on indications of high-risk factors such as victimization of child sex trafficking, child exploitation, sex abuse, physical abuse and medical or mental health conditions."One arrest of an adult subject was made with charges including alleged crimes related to parental kidnapping, intimidation, weapons possession and custodial interference.The children were turned over to the Indiana Department of Child Services for victim assistance and placement.Federal authorities worked with other law enforcement groups, including Indianapolis police and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.“The Marshals are committed to assisting state and local agencies with locating and recovering endangered missing children to help prevent their falling victim to crimes of violence and exploitation,” said Dan McClain, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Indiana. “The message that we wish to convey to the missing children and their families is that we will use every resource at our disposal to find you.”This story was originally published by Thalia Brionez at KXXV. 1541

It was a moment one lucky Norfolk, Virginia couple didn’t know was coming.Derek Page and his fiancée, Veronica Singer, got a one-of-a-kind gift Sunday for their upcoming wedding in October.“I knew my brother was planning something, but I had no idea it would be this,” explained Derek.Derek’s brother, Alex Page, planned the surprise after coming across a Facebook post.“Instead of getting something off their registry, something that’s replaceable, I just thought it’d be a fun, unique different gift that creates a lasting memory,” said Alex Page.32-year-old Miles Hoyle surprised the couple on their porch by playing a variety of songs on his accordion. The accordionist has been playing the squeezebox for 13 years.The performances are something he calls 'Accordion-at-your-Door' where Hoyle plays songs for special occasions and celebrations - one note and one doorstep at a time.“I enjoy it a lot,” Hoyle said. “I think it helps bring them a little joy too, at least I hope so.”Hoyle started playing outside of people’s homes before the pandemic but said business ramped up right after the stay-at-home order went into effect.“I’ve also played outside a few restaurants on their porches,” he said.Hoyle also plays the accordion in his two bands, The Fighting Jamesons and Mosquito Cabaret, but as the COVID-19 crisis put most live entertainment on pause, his solo performances picked up traction.“I think it’s a win-win for everybody,” Hoyle said.The final song Hoyle played for the couple was Elvis Presley’s “Can’t help falling in love.” The couple applauded after the 15-minute show ended. Derek Page said the surprise left them with lasting memories.“I could not have even expected this, not in a million years,” he said. “This was amazing.
