 A longtime program focused on feeding the homeless at Mary Star of the Sea Church in La Jolla has been cancelled because of concerns about Hepatitis A. The founder of "So Others May Eat", Tresha Souza, tells 10 News the pastor of the church informed her at the end of October that she would no longer be able to serve people at their facility, citing concerns about the recent Hep A outbreak. The Catholic Diocese issued the following statement: “We’re sorry for any misunderstandings that have arisen regarding the ‘So Others May Eat’ dinners that used to take place at Mary Star of the Sea.  A major renovation forced us to close our parish hall for the past several months and we have had to redirect where and how we do our part to serve the less fortunate in our parish.   We have not and will never turn our backs on the poor.  As a parish, we will respond to the needs of our community; we will overcome the challenges posed by the Hepatitis outbreak and we will continue to provide assistance to the homeless people and families who need our help and our prayers.”  1122

Gavin Newsom says the state will halt sales of new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks by 2035.On Wednesday, he ordered state regulators to come up with requirements to meet that goal. California would be the first state with such a rule, though Germany and France are among 15 other countries that have a similar requirement.Newsom's plan would not ban people from owning gas-powered cars or selling them on the used car market, but it would end the sales of all new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks in the state.California already has rules mandating a certain percentage of new car sales be electric or zero-emission vehicles. 678

(AP/KGTV) — The U.S. Navy is expected to honor a World War II hero when a new aircraft carrier is named for Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller. "Dorie" Miller enlisted in September 1939 as a Mess Attendant Third Class. He was recognized for manning a machine gun on the USS West Virginia and returning fire against Japanese planes during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. He then helped rescue injured sailors as ship evacuations were ordered. Miller was awarded the Navy Cross for valor for his actions, the first African American to receive the award.This will be the second ship named after Miller and the first aircraft carrier ever named after an African American.“In selecting this name, we honor the contributions of all our enlisted ranks, past and present, men and women, of every race, religion and background,” said Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly. “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. observed, ‘Everybody can be great - because anybody can serve’. No one understands the importance and true meaning of service than those who have volunteered to put the needs of others above themselves.”Miller served aboard the USS Indianapolis from December 1941 to May 1943, before being assigned to the escort carrier Liscome Bay. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A distraught mother is on the hunt for clues after a thief stole her car and all the gifts she bought for her three children."We love Christmas," said Brenda Gamino.Gamino's Christmas tree is brimming with holiday spirit, but the scene underneath the tree is a bit bare. The gifts that should be there are gone, along with her 1998 Acura Integra. It disappeared from in front of her home on Batista Street In Linda Vista last week."Really angry and crying a lot," said Gamino.RELATED: Holiday lights stolen from San Diego homesThe theft was doubly painful. The car is her only way to get to work and drop of her kids - ages, 8, 10 and 12 - at school. When she realized what she had left in the trunk, her heart sank."Felt like something heavy fell on me," said Gamino.Inside the trunk: dozens of gifts she was hiding from her children, some 0 worth."I was really upset. Couldn't believe someone would do that. "One said, 'It's okay, Mom. We'll figure it out.' I've always taught them it's more about giving than receiving ... There was a lot of pride. Emotional and happy," said Gamino.Gamino's friends are helping her with rides until she can purchase another car.
