SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department says it has resumed conducting pre-pandemic evictions but continues to make that decision on a case-by-case basis.The department said in a statement that it served 12 evictions in July."The priority of enforcement focused on vacant locations or locations with reports of criminal activity. When possible, deputies conducted pre-eviction interviews and offered community resources to those who may need them at the pre-eviction interview and on the day of the lockout," SDSO's statement read.Of the 12 evictions last month, one was at a commercial property and 11 were at residential properties.Of the 11 properties, six were occupied and five were abandoned, SDSO said. In four of the six properties, deputies said criminal activities had taken place at the residences.At the fifth location, deputies say they found an elderly woman who was suffering from mental illness with health concerns and living with no heat or water. She was taken to a hospital.SDSO said the court order for the sixth location was about to expire so it had to be served.Last month, San Diego City Council leaders voted to extend a rent payback period on renters who have lost income due to COVID-19 until December 30. Renters are also required to follow the rules in leases, but landlords cannot evict a tenant for nonpayment due to COVID-19. 1380

Friday, March 1, the university will host a special birthday party for the author, which coincides with National Read Across America Day. The celebration will include cake, carnival games, a read-a-thon, giant inflatable Suess characters and, of course, a selfie station.The event will also include a reading from “Happy Birthday to You!” in honor of the classic book's 60th anniversary. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The US Census is looking to hire thousands of people in San Diego, and hoping that /hour and flexible schedules are enough to entice people to apply."It takes a community to count a community," says Census Outreach Specialist David Bennett. "We're trying to count everybody once, only once, in the right place. We need help."Right now, the Census is putting on a hiring blitz around the country, with half-a-million jobs to fill. They're canvassing college campuses and other public places where people may be looking for a part-time job."It's for people, especially in this gig-economy, who are looking to get some extra money and be a part of history," says Bennett.Jobs range from counters who will go door to door to management. They can last anywhere from 6 weeks to two years. Pay starts at .50/hour."It's so important," says Bennett. "Our founders wanted to make sure our government looked like our citizens. That's why we do the Census."To be eligible, you must be a US Citizen, 18 years or older, and available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Bennett says there are some exceptions if you're not a citizen but speak a foreign language that can help with the count.Applications take about 10 minutes to complete and can be done online or over the phone. 1303

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is warning San Diegans about a mysterious and possibly deadly counterfeit drug being traded on the streets. The department says they believe the pills have caused four overdose deaths in San Diego County over the last 36 hours. The deaths happened in Valley Center, Santee, Poway and Lakeside. “It’s being traded and sold on the streets with the promise of a painkiller high, but no one really knows what exactly is in the drug which makes it so dangerous,” the department said. Authorities say the pills are blue with one side marked by an "M" while the other side is stamped with a "30." The department says the pills are often called "M-30s" or "blues."While the department doesn't know exactly what's in the pills, investigators say these type of pills often contain fentanyl or carfentanil.Anyone with information is urged to call the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477.
