CAMP PENDLETON, Calif., (KGTV)-- Thousands of US Marines stormed a makeshift town today as part of the largest amphibious exercise in Camp Pendleton's history. With their guns drawn and light on their feet, the Marines at Camp Pendleton have one objective: secure the Red Beach Combat Town. The town is a collection of makeshift structures off Las Pulgas Road just west of Interstate 5.The scenario was this: The soldiers are fighting the enemy from a near-pier threat. The Marines got battle-ready at sea, aboard the USS Somerset and USS Macon Island, thanks to their special partnership with the US Navy. "We spend a lot of time on ship, a lot of time coordinating with the sailors themselves inside the welded deck inside the ship," Amphibious Assault [AAV] Section Leader, Sgt. Kenneth Larkin said. "Being able to rely on each other for the safety of our vehicles and our members, it's phenomenal."From ship to shore, the men and women arrive on their AAV. They creep onto shore at seven mph, then book it on land. The crew drops off the infantry, ant the combat simulation begins. This scenario kicks off this year's Steel Knight Exercise. With 13,000 Marines and sailors participating, it is the largest iteration of the Steel Knight Exercise at Camp Pendleton."The Marine Corps prides itself on being amphibious, so this is one of those exercises where the division gets involved. The entire division of Camp Pendleton," Infantry Platoon Sgt. Ethan Rhoades said. "It basically hones our skills to actually go from ship to shore and to seize an objective likely would in a real-time conflict."For two weeks straight, the men and women will repeat the aerial and amphibious exercises. Tough training in the elements will prepare them for real-life scenarios. (KGTV) - A former DACA recipient was arrested Monday on his second attempt to re-enter the U.S. from Mexico.El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents received information from Remote Video Surveillance Systems operators that a man had crossed the border fence approximately 3 miles east of Calexico.RVSS monitors showed the man running away from agents as they tried to arrest him, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said.After a brief chase, agents caught 23-year-old Mexican citizen Juan Manual Montes-Bojorquez.CBP said Montes had previously been deported in February.“Our agents witnessed and arrested Mr. Bojorquez making an illegal entry into the United States for the second time this year,” said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim. “Border Patrol Agents will always stop, detain, and arrest anyone making an illegal entry into the country irrespective of their immigration or citizenship status.” Montes was booked into the Imperial County Jail on pending charges of re-entry after removal.  1047

CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Cal Fire responded Saturday afternoon to a large fire burning near the border in Campo. According to the agency, the fire is raging near Forest Gate Road and Border Road.Although Southern California Air Operations tweeted around 11:45 a.m. that the fire "is now well established on the U.S. side," Cal Fire says the blaze never reached the U.S. Air Operations said it sent several aircraft to the fire, including two tankers and two helicopters, but around 1 p.m., all aircraft were released from the fire. The agency said the fire is burning in light flashy fuels with a rapid rate of spread. The blaze is estimated at 50 to 100 acres currently, Cal Fire reported. CALEXICO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a man who was hit by a vehicle driven by a U.S. Border Patrol agent near the U.S.-Mexico border. U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the incident happened about 8:40 p.m. Friday when the agent was driving to a spot along the border to investigate reports of people illegally crossing it. The agent’s vehicle hit a man who was lying in the road. The agent immediately rendered aid to the man until emergency medical services arrived. The agency says the man was first taken to a nearby hospital and then airlifted to a trauma center in Palm Springs, where he died. 642

(KGTV) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than million worth of narcotics in a single vehicle stop this week.CBP says officers stopped a 55-year-old driver at about 4 a.m. at the Calexico Port of Entry and referred the driver to a secondary inspection, where an x-ray imaging system identified anomalies in the vehicle.A search of the vehicle turned up 20 packages of fentanyl weighing 48 pounds, and 121 packages of methamphetamine weighing 517 pounds hidden in the floor, gas tank, seats, and spare tire.The driver was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security officials. 628
