The U.S. reported yet another daily high mark for newly reported cases of COVID-19 on Thursday with nearly 188,000, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University.The U.S. reported at least 187,833 positive COVID-19 tests on Thursday, breaking the all-time record of 177,224 that was set six days prior, on Nov. 13.Thursday marked the eighth time in November that the U.S. broke the daily record for newly reported cases as the COVID-19 continues to spread across the country. About 2.5 million people in the U.S. have contracted the virus since the start of November.The spike in cases has led to all-time highs in hospitalizations linked to the virus. The COVID Tracking Project reports that more than 80,000 people are currently hospitalized with the virus across the country — an all-time record that surpasses even the early portions of the pandemic. According to the COVID Tracking Project, 71% of those hospitalizations occur in the Midwest and South, leading to many rural hospitals running short on resources. Some states like South Dakota and Iowa say their hospitals are at their breaking points.Thursday also saw reports of 2,000 deaths linked to the virus — the first time the U.S. has seen that many reported deaths in a single day since May 6. The Stallion Springs, California Police Department is warning the public about a cell phone "spoofing" scam that's going around asking for personal information. The spoofing scam appears to look like a legitimate phone call as the caller ID is displayed as the victim's own cellphone number.A voice recording identifies the call is coming from AT&T, and advises the victim that their cellphone account has been compromised and they may be a victim of fraud. The voice recording then asks for the victim to confirm their personal information, specifically asking for the last four digits of their social security number.AT&T confirmed to Stallion Springs Police that this is a phone scam. Police advise that if you receive calls like this, to not answer them. The Southeastern Conference has had to postpone or cancel three games this week because of positive COVID cases among several football programs."While it is unfortunate to have multiple postponements in the same week, we began the season with the understanding interruptions to the schedule were possible and we have remained focused throughout the season on the health of everyone around our programs," said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey in a press release on Tuesday. "We must remain vigilant, within our programs and in our communities, to prevent the spread of the virus and to manage activities that contribute to these interruptions."The conference has postponed Saturday's game between No. 20 Auburn and Mississippi State because of positive COVID-19 cases and quarantining within the Bulldogs' program.In a press release, the conference had to reschedule the game between the Tigers and Bulldhad to Dec. 12.On Tuesday, the conference announced that No. 5 Texas A&M would not face Tennessee because of positive COVID-19 cases and quarantining within the Aggies' program.The Volunteers and Aggies game has been rescheduled to Dec. 12, the conference said.A&M had to pause in-person activities on Monday after a player and a staff member tested positive for COVID-19 after returning from South Carolina.The conference also had to postpone Saturday's LSU game against No. 1 Alabama due to an outbreak within the LSU program.LSU already has a game on Dec. 12 because they're facing No. 6 Florida Gators, which was pushed back from October due to a COVID outbreak within the Gators program.Because LSU has a game tentatively scheduled for Dec. 12, the opportunity to reschedule Alabama at LSU game will need to be evaluated," the SEC said.
