SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The unofficial start of summer is here in San Diego and that means it’s time to hit the beaches and enjoy some sunshine.Health officials are reminding residents that it’s also time to check the water quality before heading out.The County of San Diego’s Department of Environmental Health checks the water on a regular basis and posts that information online.Due to the need to warn residents if water quality is poor, the county developed the “Check Before You Get In” website.The site allows people to check water conditions at more than 80 local beaches. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The search is on for three teenagers that held a man at gunpoint then stole his car in Paradise Hills.According to San Diego police, the incident happened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at the victim's apartment complex on Doriana Street.Police believe the carjacking happened just minutes after the same teenagers attempted, but failed, to carjack another man near the intersection of Alta View and Potomac, a few blocks away.The victim suffered a minor injuries to the head and is expected to be OK.Police say the three teens are believed to be between the ages of 16-18. They sped off in the victim's gray Honda and are still on the loose.Detailed descriptions of the teens and a license plate number for the stolen car were not immediately released. 778

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The two brothers convicted of killing their parents at their Beverly Hills mansion have been reunited in prison, according to the Associated Press.A spokesperson for the corrections department says 47-year-old Erik Menendez has moved into the same housing unit as his 50-year-old brother, Lyle Menendez.Both brothers are serving life sentences for shooting and killing their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989.Officials say Lyle was moved from Mule Creek State Prison to San Diego’s R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility in February, where his brother has been held in a separate unit since 2013. Wednesday, Erik moved into the same facility, where inmates interact in rehabilitation programs. The brothers can now spend time together during meal time and recreational periods. Each of the brothers has served time at three other state prisons. The brothers claim the murders happened after they were sexually abused by their father. Prosecutors said during the trial that the brothers wanted their parents’ multimillion-dollar estate. 1091

San Diego (KGTV) - The remains of a Marine who was killed in a helicopter crash were brought back to San Diego Saturday night in a military procession.The body of 33-year-old Gunnery Sgt. Derik Holley was flown to Lindbergh Field then driven to Greenwood Mortuary.He was killed on April 3rd during a training exercise near El Centro when his helicopter crashed.Lance Cpl. Taylor J. Conrad, 1st Lt. Samuel D. Phillips and Capt. Samuel A. Schultz were also killed.A memorial service has been scheduled on Tuesday at MCAS Miramar. 535

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The pinch of the partial shutdown on federal government agencies and employees approached a squeeze Wednesday as workers prepared for their first pay period without a paycheck. Hundreds of thousands of federal employees who are furloughed or working without pay during the government shutdown are anticipating an end to the political standoff. The partial shutdown, which took effect Dec. 21, forced 420,000 workers to continue their jobs without pay. 380,000 workers were furloughed nationwide. 5,000 of the affected workers are in San Diego County, according to Rep. Scott Peters' office, which cited the Association of Federal Government Workers. Border Patrol agents enforcing the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County are among the affected employees. So are TSA agents, including those who kept holiday travelers safe at Lindbergh Field. RELATED: No deal to end shutdown; Trump says 'could be a long time'Many San Diegans only noticed the impact of the shutdown by the closure of national parks including the Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma, and Joshua Tree National Park. However, more people may soon feel the change. Many departments and agencies are running out of carryover cash, Politico reports. Dozens of national parks and museums, including Smithsonian facilities, closed Wednesday as they ran out of money. Yosemite National Park limited entry due to problems with human waste and public safety. Visitors were told to use restrooms in nearby communities before entering the park. The Coast Guard is scaling back boating safety checks, mariner licensing, and fishing law enforcement, according to Politico. Tax filing season, which usually starts in January, may start later, and many IRS workers may be called to work without pay for filing season. The most recent pay period ended Dec. 22, with paychecks arriving Dec. 28. The next pay period ends Jan. 5, with the check due Jan. 11. There’s a possibility that check may never come. Workers may be paid retroactively but it would take an act of Congress. To make the financial picture even more grim for federal employees, President Trump issued an executive order Friday, freezing their pay for 2019. Their 2.1 percent hike was supposed to take effect this month.
