SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The University of California San Diego is planning to make a new first impression. New renderings show the schools intentions of building a "‘grand entrance" to attract more students and people from San Diego. A 3,000 seat amphitheater, a six-building student center with retail and restaurants are just some of the things showcased in the new plans. “There is hardly a thing that exists in the Gaslamp or Balboa that doesn’t exist here,” said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla on the renderings. UCSD believes public transportation that’s being built near and on-campus will help with the future influx of people they want checking out their amenities. The blue line trolley and the three stations around the area are forecasted to be completed by 2021. “We want to be one more destination to the San Diego experience,” added Khosla, “we’re gonna change this campus to have these things so students can hang out and the community will come here to hang out too.” The price tag is still being worked out but it’s expected to cost well into the hundreds of millions of dollars. 1100

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This has been an incredibly painful week for Americans. We have had to endure yet another mass shooting at a school claiming more innocent lives. People often ask why we even bother to focus on the shooter in our coverage fearing it will glorify the individual or create copycat killers. In this edition of Let's Talk, we explain in detail why we feel it's important to name and put a face to the shooter.  443

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The United State Marine Corps is ordering the removal of the Confederate battle flag from public display and in work spaces aboard its installations, such as Camp Pendleton. The announcement was made late Friday night amid fiery protests across the country against racism and police killings."Today, the Marine Corps released guidance on the removal of public displays of the Confederate battle flag," read a post on USMC's official Twitter account. The order bans all depictions of the Confederate battle flag, including clothing, posters, mugs, bumper stickers, and the flag itself."Our history as a nation, and events like the violence in Charlottesville in 2017, highlight the divisiveness the use of the Confederate battle flag has had on our society," said USMC. "This presents a threat to our core values, unit cohesion, security, and good order and discipline."In 2017, white nationalists groups rallied against the proposed removal of a statue of Confederate soldier Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville. It was one of several controversial monuments targeted for removal following a massacre two years earlier in which a white supremacist gunned down nine black church members in Charleston. The rally saw violent clashes, including the death of a 32-year-old woman who was killed when a car rammed into a group of counter-protesters.USMC allows for the flag to be displayed in works of art, educational or historical displays depicting a Civil War battle where the flag is present but not the main focus of the work. It also does not ban the display of state flags and license plates which incorporate the Confederate battle flag."It is impossible to specify every possible exception that may apply. Commanders are expected to apply their best judgment informed by the spirit and intent of this maradmin," said USMC. "If a commander encounters questionable circumstances, the command staff judge advocate shall be contacted for legal review and advice." 1995

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three prominent Democrats have filed papers with the City of San Diego declaring their intention to run for mayor in 2020. San Diego City Councilwoman Barbara Bry, Assemblyman Todd Gloria, and Congressman Scott Peters all submitted documents to the City Clerk, allowing them to fund raise for the 2020 primary on March 3. They would replace Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, who is termed out in 2020. Bry formally announced her candidacy on Wednesday. She said her experience as a high tech entrepreneur and nonprofit leader give her a unique approach to tackling key city issues like cost of housing, homelessness, clean energy, and educating students for the jobs of tomorrow. RELATED: San Diego politics coverage"We will be building a grassroots campaign with hundreds of volunteers and neighborhood coffees all over the city," Bry said. "That will be very important for me to get my message out and to meet people and to learn about their issues."Peters, recently re-elected to the House of Representatives, was in Washington D.C. and unavailable for an interview. A spokeswoman for the Congressman said he formed an exploratory committee but has made no decision yet as to whether to run. A spokesman for Gloria, who served as interim mayor after Bob Filner resigned in 2013, would only say "stay tuned."Political analyst John Dadian said he expects Republicans to file to run for the spot soon. The job is technically non-partisan."Even though they're all Democrats, don't look at it as a monolith," he said. "They all have supporters for different reasons. They all have championed different issues."So far, six people have filed to run for mayor in 2020. In addition to Bry, Gloria and Peters, J'Erek Evans, Cedric Greene, and Rich Riel have filed papers. 1794
