PARADISE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Miles and miles of leveled homes line the streets of Paradise after the Camp Fire swept through. The destructive fire left students at Spring Velley school homeless. The one thing the fire couldn’t take away: spirit. Children’s spirits remain high, lifting the adults around them. The Spirit of Liberty Foundation gave them a gift this Christmas they’ll never forget, handing out stuffed animal, sweatshirts and T-shirts from the San Diego Zoo. “I’m really glad they’re donating this stuff, it’s really awesome,” said Jack, a student at the school. Jack is a seventh grader and one of the lucky ones whose home survived, but the same isn’t true for his friends. OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — Six correctional officers and two inmates at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility were hospitalized Sunday after officials said a group of prisoners attacked the officers in a recreation yard.The incident was reported at the prison just before 4 p.m., according to the California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation. About 20 inmates were in the facility's recreation yard when some began to attack the officers.The six officers suffered stab wounds, lacerations, and possible broken bones and were taken to a nearby hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.Two inmates were also taken to outside hospitals for treatment. Other inmates involved were taken to the prison's medical facility for treatment.Officials are not sure how many inmates were involved in the attack, but say that they ignored commands to stop, forcing less-lethal measures to be used. A warning shot was fired and additional officers responded to the yard.Several weapons were reportedly recovered at the scene.The four suspects were identified as Joe Mendez, 39, Luis Delgado, 24, Michael Figueroa, 20, and William Barba, 41. Those involved could also face charges of attempted murder of a peace officer.Nearly one year ago, five inmates were injured in a riot involving about 80 inmates at the prison. Prior to that, three inmates suffered stab wounds in a seven-on-one fight in the facility in April 2019. In February 2019, a fight between 50 inmates left at least 10 prisoners injured.According to the prison's reports online, 204 use of force incidents were reported in 2019. In its quarterly reports through March 2020, the last posted report, the prison had not reported any use of force incidents.Donovan State Prison houses about 3,624 minimum-, medium-, and maximum-security inmates. 1825

Papa John won't leave Papa John's alone.The company has tried hard to distance itself from founder John Schnatter, who blamed the NFL for poor pizza sales last fall and then admitted using the N-word on a conference call this spring.Sales slumped, and Papa John's stock declined. CEO Steve Ritchie and the current leadership blame Schnatter, who stepped down as chairman in July.Schnatter told CNNMoney in an interview Tuesday that he's being scapegoated."You can't blame everything on two comments," he said. "I wish I had that kind of power, but I don't."Instead, Schnatter pinned the company's problems on Ritchie, who became CEO in January. Schnatter described him as a poor leader who has created a culture of intimidation at Papa John's, and let quality and customer service slip."We need new leadership," he said. "He struggles as a CEO.""Steve'll make a great executive somewhere else," he added. "He's just the wrong guy for the job."He described upper management under Ritchie as vindictive and controlling."People right now are scared to talk," he said.Schnatter, who is still the largest shareholder and owns almost a third of the company, insists he doesn't want to return as CEO. People who watch certain classic Disney movies on Disney+ will see a new, more strongly worded advisory warning about racist content.Disney announced last year when they launched they would include an advisory on some films that read "may contain outdated cultural depictions."Now, the advisory has stronger wording, and will be included on films like “Peter Pan,” “Dumbo” and “Lady and the Tramp” that contain racist or insensitive content. In a statement on their website, they explain their decision to add an advisory.“As part of our ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, we are in the process of reviewing our library and adding advisories to content that includes negative depictions or mistreatment of people or cultures. Rather than removing this content, we see an opportunity to spark conversation and open dialogue on history that affects us all,” the company states.Disney says they are making decisions on which films receive the advisory based on guidance from third-party partners, including AAFCA, GLAAD, NALIP, among others.This is what the new advisory says:This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. PACIFIC BEACH (KGTV)-- Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and police are bracing for partiers with maximum enforcement throughout the holiday.At Pacific Beach dozens of motorized scooters pooled around two San Diego Police Officers. They educated dozens of riders on the rules, saying riders need to wear a helmet. They've given out dozens of tickets as well, since Friday.Skateboards and roller skates are also not allowed on the boardwalk. Jake Kostreba said he rides on the boardwalk all the time and was frustrated at why he received a ticket, "I mean I guess someone needs to clean up the beach so, I'll be that guy, so whatever, it's pretty dirty."Police say he lost control of his board and it hit a woman's shin.Visitors told 10News they don't mind the extra police presence.Ruqayyah Abdulrahoof drove down from Los Angeles, "I think it's really important to see the police over here especially with the kids and the beach I think it's really important to make sure the people have a good safe memorial day weekend and nobody's drinking I think it's a great place, and good to see officers are making an effort."Scot Brantley came down with his wife and baby from Washington for a friend's crossfit tournament and echoed the sentiment, "I think we feel safe you know people are out here enjoying having a good time so nothing too crazy so far but it's early it's early though."On the beach, lifeguards have been busy as well, rescuing 20 people and rendering medical aid to 47 Saturday. They also had more than 1,000 preventative interactions.Lifeguards want you to know smoking and alcohol is never permitted at the beach.Police geared up for a weekend of DUI checkpoints and extra patrols. Chula Vista, San Diego City and County will all have checkpoints set up, looking for impaired drivers. That includes medication as well as alcohol.DUI arrests are up this year compared to 2017 on the same day.
