SAN DIEGO (KGTV): San Diego State University may require all students to have the Meningitis-B vaccine beginning in the fall of 2019.The University is in preliminary discussions about the idea after an outbreak made three students sick on campus this fall.A university spokesperson confirmed to 10News that the school is in the very early stages of the idea. A statement from the school says it stems from "continued conversations with the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency," and that "the safety and wellbeing of all SDSU students remains the priority."The Cal State University system doesn't require the Meningitis-B vaccine. Their guidelines say that schools only need to "inform incoming freshmen living on-campus about the Meningococcal disease and provide information on available vaccines."However, according to SDSU, "The California State University Office of the Chancellor is engaging in the review and consultation process necessary to update the existing policy." In 2014, a student died from Meningitis-B.The disease has similar symptoms to a cold or flu. It can be fatal. In other cases, people who get the disease suffer brain damage, hearing loss or the loss of limbs, fingers or toes.During the most recent outbreak, the University supplied antibiotics to students who were in close contact with the ones who'd been infected. The school also held vaccination clinics on campus.Some students had to get a second vaccination after the school discovered that several doses of the vaccine weren't properly stored. Those vaccines were administered by Walgreens, who also was responsible for their storage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat damaged the USS Midway Sunday.The mast of the sailboat collided with a safety net attachment on the front port-side ‘horn’ of the ship. The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. according to Harbor Police.The mast of the sailboat snapped off. There was minor damage to the safety nets of the Midway.“I thought something fell off the flight line, I didn't think a boat would crash into the Midway,” said Craig Wiener, who was touring the Midway at the time of the crash. “We were looking out the little port windows, and you see the mast falling off into the water."Harbor patrol says no charges are expected and attributed the crash to inexperience on the part of the person steering the sailboat.  Eight people were onboard the sailboat, and none of them were hurt.“He didn't realize how close he was and how tall his mast was and it was too late and the wind pulled him in,” Wiener said. 945

SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - Doctors are warning that this winter's wet weather means an early start to allergy season."We anticipate that it could get pretty bad," says Dr. Dana Ger, the Clinical Director of Scripps Health Express.She says her offices have already seen people with all the symptoms; sneezing, runny noses, scratchy throats, coughs and congestion.Dr. Ger says you can blame it on the rain. All the wet weather in January and February kept the pollen close to the ground instead letting it disperse into the atmosphere. It's also creating a perfect environment for allergies to develop."We get mold because we have a warm and wet environment," she says. "With that we have these allergy symptoms."The rain is also bringing a high likelihood of a super bloom, with wildflowers throughout the state. Those will add more pollen to the air.And because allergy season is starting sooner, it could make symptoms worse as the spring moves along."If you have mild allergies when it's a mild spring, or a small amounts of pollen, you can have increasing allergies when there is significantly more amounts of allergies or mold," says Dr. Ger.To treat the symptoms, Dr. Ger recommends a nasal irrigation with salt water or a spray. She also says over the counter medicines will usually take care of the problem.If they don't, Dr. Ger says you should see a doctor to make sure there isn't a bigger problem, like Sinusitis."That's when it becomes critical that we have diagnosis," she says. But some are beginning to head outdoors, just with many precautions. Just a few days into the Governor's Stay-at-home order, many San Diegans are already getting cabin fever."With our gyms closed, we got to get exercise somehow," Joann Carcioppolo said. With no access to their weights and machines, Carcioppolo and her friend Janice Meyers decided to take a stroll around Pacific Beach. Of course, keeping in mind, Rule #1. "Doing our social distancing!" Meyers laughed. Families also took to the outdoors, hiking and hitting the parks. Instead of having their children clued to their devices, the Marcussen's spent the day at Calavera Hills Community Park in Carlsbad. Mother, Candice, said today, her children's playtime had a little bit of a modification. "We're not letting them play on the playground," Marcussen said.
