LANZHOU, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Inspectors had found poisonous chemical in the Sanlu infant formula produced by one of its partner producers in northwest China's Gansu Province, an official said on Sunday. Two out of the 12 samples randomly selected from the Sanlu milk powder produced by the Haoniu Dairy Co., Ltd. in Jiuquan City had tested positive for melamine, said Xian Hui, vice-governor of Gansu. "The products of Haoniu have been sealed up," he said. The test was conducted after the Sanlu Group, a leading Chinese dairy producer based in northern Hebei Province, admitted that it had found some of its baby milk powder products were contaminated with melamine, a chemical raw material strictly forbidden by the country to be used in food processing. As of Saturday, a total of 432 babies throughout the nation have been sickened with kidney stones after drinking the contaminated milk powder. Haoniu was founded in 2002 with the registered capital of 51 million yuan (7.45 million U.S. dollars). Its production was in line with the Sanlu standard and its products use the Sanlu trademark. As of Saturday night, Gansu has reported 102 cases of infant kidney stone caused by the Sanlu milk powder. Two babies have died, Xian said. The province has so far seized altogether 164,000 packs of Sanlu milk powder.
LHASA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake followed by some 1,000 aftershocks has affected more than 60,000 people in the Tibet Autonomous Region this week, the local government said in a news conference Saturday. Since Monday's 6.6-magnitude quake struck Damxung County in Lhasa, more than 1,000 aftershocks have been monitored, including one that measured 5.4 on the Richter scale, said Gong Puguang, vice president of the regional government. 61,231 people in the region's capital have been affected and 989 houses collapsed, said Gong. More than 4,800 people have been relocated out of the quake zone. The quake-hit areas include Lhasa, Xigaze and Shannan regions, where 28 km of road and 11 bridges were damaged. So far, ten people have been confirmed dead. 54 others sustained injuries, one third of those injuries are serious. The central government allocated 10 million yuan (1.46 million U.S. dollars), 11,000 tents, quilts, and other quake relief materials to the affected area. The items were being distributed as traffic and telecommunication resumed in the area. The local government is evaluating economic losses from the disaster. Seismologists predict more aftershocks will hit the county but the force is unlikely to exceed 5.5 on the Richter scale. BEIJING, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Friday that he hoped China and the European Union (EU) would enhance its dialogue and consultation to ensure the healthy and stable development of the China-EU all-round strategic partnership. Hu made the remarks in a meeting with EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. He said it was not only in line with both sides' fundamental interests, but also conducive to the peace, stability and development of the world to further cement and step up China-EU ties under current circumstances. He said the EU was committed to developing a strategic partnership with China and was willing to solve disputes through dialogue on the basis of mutual respect and constructive spirit. Barroso expressed appreciation for China's consistent support for the EU integrity, and wished the Beijing Olympics a success. Vice Premier Wang Qishan attended the meeting.
BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The quake relief headquarters of the State Council (cabinet) Tuesday sent a congratulatory telegram to the Tangjiashan lake emergency rescue headquarters for the successful drainage of the quake lake. "After more than 10 consecutive days of hard work, you successfully drained the Tangjiashan quake lake and eliminated a huge threat of secondary disaster after the May 12 quake," the telegram said. The drainage water of Tangjiashan quake-formed lake passes Mianyang City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, June 10, 2008. (Xinhua Photo)Photo Gallery>>> "Your work has ensured the people's security, avoided a huge loss and created a miracle in dealing with large quake-formed lakes," it said. "The State Council quake relief headquarters would like to express heart-felt gratitude and respect to the troops, geologists and quake and weather technicians working at the front line and those who helped evacuate people in low-lying areas," it said. The headquarters urged people to continue the work until they were done with follow-up activity in terms of drainage and evacuations. The Tangjiashan lake was formed after quake-triggered landslides from Tangjiashan Mountain blocked the Tongkou River running through Beichuan County, one of the worst-hit areas in the quake that struck southwestern Sichuan Province. Had the lake overflowed, it could have threatened some 1 million people on the lower reaches of the lake. A man-made spillway started to drain the lake on Saturday morning and military engineers used recoil-less guns, bazookas and dynamite on Sunday and Monday to blast boulders and other obstructions in the channel and speed up the outflow. The lake shrank dramatically on Tuesday as muddy water flowed into the low-lying areas. About half of the lake's 250 million cubic meters of water has been discharged since the drainage started. More than 250,000 people in low-lying areas of Mianyang were relocated under a plan based on the assumption that one-third of the lake volume breached the dam.
BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have ordered that supplies for the summer harvest be guaranteed amid reports of shortages in some areas. Following their order, the State Council has asked local governments and related enterprises to prioritize supplies such as diesel, the fuel for farm vehicles, to take advantage of the best time for the ongoing wheat harvest. Tight supplies of diesel were reported in some areas since the country began to reap the wheat crop in May as refiners experienced losses resulting from domestic prices that were kept below the spiraling international prices.
