BALTIMORE — Americans stepped up their home purchases in June by a robust 20.7% after the pandemic had caused sales to crater in the prior three months. But the housing market could struggle to rebound further in the face of the resurgent viral outbreak and a shrinking supply of homes for sale. Sales of existing homes rose last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.72 million, the National Association of Realtors said. Their data showed all four regions of the country saw growth, with the west experiencing a larger increase. The data included single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops. Despite the sharp monthly gain, purchases are still down 11.3% from a year ago, when homes had sold at an annual pace of 5.32 million.Inventory remains an issues, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). A low number of available homes was an issue before the pandemic. Total inventory is down 18.2 percent from a year ago, according to the data. The low supply and increasing demand could cause a spike in the price of homes.“Home prices rose during the lockdown and could rise even further due to heavy buyer competition and a significant shortage of supply," said Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist.The median price for exisiting-home sales in June was 3.5 percent higher than a year ago. As Thanksgiving nears, 74 more cases of salmonella, including 1 death, have been linked to raw turkey products, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.The CDC announced the outbreak in July, but more people have gotten sick, bringing the total to 164 in 35 states. One person in California has died, and 63 people have been hospitalized.The outbreak started in November 2017. It's unclear where the turkey at the center of this outbreak came from, as there doesn't appear to be one centralized distributor, the agency said. This could mean that "it might be widespread in the turkey industry."Lab tests show that the salmonella came from a variety of products, including ground turkey and turkey patties. Tests showed that it's also been in live turkeys and pet food. 796

At X3 Sports, trainers have a goal of bringing out the warrior within their students by building up their cardiovascular endurance and their self-confidence.After being shut down because of COVID-19 concerns, this mixed martial arts gym in Atlanta is reopening and seeing a major increase in enrollment.“Since a lot of things have been going on in our community, it has increased at least 50% than what it was,” kickboxing coach Rica Grandison said.Grandison says more people are taking these self-defense classes and citing concerns ranging from the pandemic to the protests.She added that these students enrolling represent all races, genders and sexual orientations:“I am part of the LGBTQ community,” Grandison said.“I’ve been called the 'N' word just waiting for a bus. I’ve been called the 'D' word just hanging out with my partner, my significant other at the time,” she said. “So, I have been there.”Now the X3 coaches are sharing their championship credentials with gym members like Shannon Dunlap, who joined this gym to get stronger physically and emotionally.“I am a lot more comfortable in my body; I’m a lot more self-assured,” she said. “I don’t get nervous walking down the street.”The coaches at X3 say the more someone trains, the more muscle memory they will develop. Which means if they ever become a victim of an act of violence, it’s easier to escape that situation without things getting even more physical.“If somebody’s charging you just, just give them a push kick," Grandison said. “Push them away, knock them down, run away.”While Grandison says the best fight is a fight that never happens, she also believes it best for people to have the physical skills to defend themselves. 1714

Backpage.com, a popular website used to solicit sex was shut down by the feds this week. In Martin County, Florida, deputies are expecting more women to sell themselves on the street now as a result. As much as Backpage made it easier to buy and sell sex, investigations into the illegal trade would often start there. “Backpage, that was like the hub for us. We usually built a lot of our cases,” MCSO Lt. Jesse Carde told Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach in an interview. She took WPTV to where they’ll shift more attention as they expect pimps and prostitutes to do the same. “Not that they ever stopped the operations on the street but obviously we expect a little more for traffic,” she said. Generally the popular days for prostitutes to be out on the streets in Martin County are after payday, Friday and Saturday, but now with Backpage shut down, there could be changes. “People that live in neighborhoods that have in the past tended to be hotspots for prostitution, they’re going to probably see resurgence of it at least until the prostitutes, the sex workers, find a different way to use the internet,” MCSO Sheriff William Snyder said. “I’ll take you by the street where we’ve shut down a couple brothels in the neighborhood,” Carde said. These brothels would market themselves online, but also using old school methods such as business cards promoting a shell business and a wink. “As they’re passing out their cards well it’s ‘not really but come by, we’ll take care of you’ and people in the neighborhood already knew what kind of business it was,” she said. Detecting those will rely more on tips and undercover surveillance.With Backpage down, Lt. Carde says it will make it harder for traveling sex workers to find Johns. It will also help curb underage and girls forced into the trade. “I think it’s definitely a win for law enforcement that Backpage has been shutdown,” she said.  1986

At least 257 people have been killed in a military plane crash near Algeria's capital, Algiers, state media reports.The aircraft crashed near the Boufarik air base, between Algiers and the city of Bilda. Ten of those killed were the plane crew, according to state-run Radio Algerie.It was not immediately clear whether there were any survivors.TV station Ennahar showed images of smoke rising from the plane's fuselage, tilted to one side, with part of the aircraft sticking out above olive trees.
