HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- A teenager who started the massive Eagle Creek Fire in Oregon has been ordered to pay more than in restitution, according to KOMO.The judge made the decision Monday. The teen’s attorney argued that the massive restitution would violate Oregon and U.S. constitutions because it would inflict “cruel and unusual punishment.”The Eagle Creek Fire started in September of 2017 and destroyed more than 48,000 acres of forest land in the Columbia River Gorge.The teen was 15 at the time of the fire. According to authorities, the teen was tossing fireworks into brush while hiking on the Eagle Creek Trail. One of the fireworks ignited the fire. 670

HAYWARD, California (AP) — Robots that can flip burgers, make salads, and even bake bread are in growing demand as virus-wary kitchens try to put some distance between workers and customers. Starting this fall, the White Castle burger chain will test a robot arm that can cook french fries, corn dogs. The robot, dubbed Flippy, is made by Pasadena, California-based Miso Robotics. In June, Flippy began working full-day shifts - 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at CaliBurger in Pasadena.“We have demonstrated that Flippy can work on our standard equipment and meet high volume demand with substantially greater cooking consistency than our kitchens that have not yet installed Flippy,” said Tony Lomelino, Chief Technology Officer of CaliBurger in a press release. “Additionally, we have developed a program to retrain our restaurant staff to serve as ‘Chef Techs’ that work alongside Flippy and monitor the related software and hardware systems. We expect these skills will be useful for employees across our chain to secure higher income jobs that require human/robotic interaction in the future restaurant industry and other industries.”Robot food service was a trend even before the coronavirus pandemic struck. Chowbotics, which makes a robot called Sally that makes salads, has been used by hospitals and universities to meet the demand for fresh, customized options 24 hours a day. Hate crime incidents reported to the FBI increased by about 17 percent last year compared to 2016, according to statistics released Tuesday by the FBI.The statistics, which were released in the bureau's annual "Hate Crime Statistics" report, are a compilation of bias-motivated incidents submitted to the FBI by 16,149 law enforcement agencies.The report found that 7,175 hate crimes were reported by law enforcement agencies in 2017, up from 6,121 reported incidents in 2016. While the number has increased, the number of agencies reporting also increased by about 1,000.Of the 7,106 single-bias hate crimes reported, 59.6 percent of victims were targeted because of the offenders' race/ethnicity/ancestry bias; 20.6 percent were targeted because of sexual-orientation bias; 1.9 percent were targeted because of gender identity bias; and 0.6 percent were targeted because of gender bias. Sixty-nine multiple bias hate crime incidents were also reported.Notably, of the 1,679 religious bias crimes reported in 2017, 58.1 percent were anti-Jewish while 18.6 percent were anti-Muslim.In a statement released Tuesday, acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker said the report "is a call to action -- and we will heed that call.""The Department of Justice's top priority is to reduce violent crime in America, and hate crimes are violent crimes," the statement read."I am particularly troubled by the increase in anti-Semitic hate crimes -- which were already the most common religious hate crimes in the United States -- that is well documented in this report. GENEVA — The World Health Organization said European nations reported more than 700,000 new coronavirus cases last week — the highest-ever figure since the start of the pandemic.In a weekly briefing published Tuesday, WHO said weekly virus cases and deaths across Europe jumped by 34% and 16% respectively.
