SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Gov. Gavin Newsom will concluded his "California for All'' Health Care Tour in San Diego Saturday by holding a rally to reaffirm his position on women's reproductive health services.Newsom had been on on the promotional tour since Tuesday, stopping in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Sacramento to discuss the health care initiatives in his proposed budget for the 2020 fiscal year.According to Newsom, his proposed initiatives would lower health care costs, expand on former President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act and make progress toward a single-payer health care system. The program would also bring back the Obamacare-era healthcare mandate that penalizes anyone who doesn't have healthcare coverage. Should state legislators approve Newsom's proposed budget, it would expand Medi-Cal coverage to adults ages 19-25 in California without illegally, offer subsidies to middle-income families with private health insurance and allocate 0 million for reproductive and sexual health care education and programs."No state has more at stake on the issue of health care. California must lead,'' Newsom said before the start of the tour. "From fighting for cheaper prescription drugs to increasing access to reproductive health care, California is fighting for more health care for all Californians.''The rally is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at United Food and Commercial Workers Local 135. The event is not open to the public, according to Newsom's office. 1487

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An emaciated dog found Friday in Bandy Canyon remains in critical condition but has shown some signs of improvement, the San Diego Humane Society's animal care staff reported today.A county resident brought the 2-year old male pit bull mix to the Humane Society's Escondido campus after finding him extremely dehydrated and cold, with pressure sores on his hips and knees. Humane Society veterinarians are working to feed and re-hydrate the dog slowly so as not to damage his body in its current fragile state.According to the organization, it could take between seven and 10 days for the dog to turn a corner and begin to recover. Humane Society staff are hopeful that will happen."When I found him he was extremely lethargic and weak,'' said Humane Society Law Enforcement Sgt. Lauren Monreal. "He's since received fluids, some electrolytes and ... even despite his horrible condition, he wags his tail.''The organization's Law Enforcement unit opened a felony cruelty investigation on Friday into the dog's abandonment and who may be responsible. Residents can offer information leading to the responsible party's arrest by calling Humane Society Law Enforcement at (619) 299-7012.San Diego Crime Stoppers is also offering a ,000 for information leading to the person's arrest. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As people begin preparing food for a Thanksgiving feast Thursday, the San Diego Humane Society has a few tips to make the celebration safer for people and their pets.Feed pets their normal food. According to SDHS, it's best to stick to their regular diet of wet and/or dry food and usual treats to keep their digestive tracts happy. Avoid sharing prepared holiday dishes, which might have ingredients that could make your pet sick.If pet owners really want to share some of the meal with their pets, and they have no known food allergies or history of stomach sensitivity, save a small amount of lean white turkey meat with no skin, bones or fat.Feed pets in their bowl rather than from the table to prevent future begging.Pet lovers should avoid offering the following foods as they can cause anything from vomiting and diarrhea to liver failure or pancreatitis:bones, skin, turkey fat and gravy;stuffing and other dishes with onions, garlic, grapes or raisins;anything cooked with butter; anddesserts. If there are holiday guests, ask them not to share food with pets. Family and friends may mean well, but it is important to remind them of the potential dangers. SDHS recommends preparing some sealed snack bags in advance to let guests use those treats instead of sharing from their plates.Keep all food and trash out of reach. This can be challenging on a busy holiday, and pets can be sneaky -- but it's important to keep these items away from your animals.Offer some pet-friendly fun. Give pets a treat dispenser, such as a Kong for dogs, that will reward them as they stay focused. Toys can provide activity, distraction and comfort, so offer different kinds of toys. A new one, like a catnip mouse for cats, can be a welcome surprise.Provide access to a quiet place to retreat. To reduce stress levels, give pets the option to step away to an enclosed room with their favorite toys and bed.Keep fresh water available to drink. Dogs typically pant more when they feel stressed, so on a busy holiday, they may require more water.Maintain a pet's usual routine for both mealtime and playtime. 2123
