7.5/10The original Super Mario All-Stars for the Super Nintendo is pound-for-pound the greatest video game cartridge ever released. Having easy access to Mario’s first three 2D adventures provides an easy way to experience the evolution and improvements made with each entry. Most importantly, all three of those games still hold up in 2020. When it comes to Super Mario 3D All-Stars, a package that includes Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy, this is not the case, but that doesn’t mean Nintendo’s new collection on the Switch is one to overlook. Image from Nintendo.com Super Mario 64Let’s get this out of the way. Super Mario 64 does not hold up. I know, it saddens me too. Mario’s first 3D adventure is arguably one of the most important video games of all time, but mamma-mia, has this game aged poorly. As soon as I jumped into the Bob-omb Battlefield course at the start, my gaming brain was startled by the game’s awful camera system, which makes completing an objective far more frustrating than I remember in 1996. Obtaining stars on each course is still exhilarating, but the excitement stemmed from the relief of conquering the awkward jumping angles, rather than accomplishing the task at hand. When it comes to visuals, the game looks exactly how you remember, albeit a bit smoother in some textures. It even retains the 4:3 aspect ratio. If you’re looking to experience the origins of 3D Mario titles, give this a look, if just for a nostalgia fill and move on. Image from Nintendo.com Super Mario SunshineThe most non-traditional of 3D Mario entries is by far Super Mario Sunshine. Originally on the only console to ever feature a handle, the Nintendo Gamecube, this game is worth a second look. Sunshine’s verticality, combined with its open-world structure, feels surprisingly modern and its difficulty remains among the highest in the Mario series, even if it’s sometimes unintentional due to the game’s bugginess. Controlling Mario with his water-filled jet pack still feels unlike anything else in the series, making for some literal refreshing mechanics that I enjoyed during my playthrough. From an art standpoint, I absolutely adore the colorful, tropical look of Isle Delfino and the characters that populate it. It’s not the best 3D Mario game, but don’t overlook this nautical adventure. Image from Nintendo.com Super Mario GalaxyThis was my first time experiencing Mario’s outer space escapade. If you told me this game came out this generation, you could easily fool me. Super Mario Galaxy hasn’t aged a day since its release in 2007. Its space-aesthetic rivals the art direction of any Nintendo Switch game to date, and its tight controls feel fantastic. Running around bite-sized planets, playing with gravity, and that launching into the next world animation makes me want to stop writing this review and go play it right now. I am cherishing the number of stars I have left to collect. It’s a real shame that Super Mario Galaxy 2 was left off of this collection. Perhaps it’s time to go dig out my Wii to experience the sequel. Galaxy is reason enough to purchase this bundle, even at the slightly steep price point. The full packageSuper Mario 3D All-Stars is just the meat and potatoes without any added junk food to consume. Aside from a playlist of 175 iconic Mario jams to listen to separately, this collection has zero special features. I would have loved to see a documentary about the making of these games, or even some never-before-seen sketches when the game was in its early stages. Instead, we’re simply left with the bare minimum of the three original games with some slightly improved visuals. Still, though, this is the easiest way to play these titles in 2020. If you’re on the fence about purchasing, this game is only available until March 31, 2021, according to Nintendo. While the timed-purchasing opportunity seems pointless, this collection is a thrilling and nostalgic trip down memory lane.Review code provided by publisher For more game reviews, follow Joey Greaber Facebook|Twitter 4184

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - With intricate, meticulous designs, one look and you’d think Newport News resident Karen Freidt has been baking for years."I've never cooked this much in my whole life," she stated. The recent NASA retiree turned pie sculpture, is turning heads with her new and very detailed hobby. She says the calling to create came to her in a dream."Something woke me up and it was like September 3rd, on your way home, out of your name into your color," she described. So Karen says she wrote down the dream in her phone. "One one of the things I thought about is how can I help others with my art ," said Freidt. After battling pneumonia and being confined to her home during COVID-19 she whipped up a few the tasty treats and posted the edible art on Facebook."The first two pies I posted on Facbeook went viral within a couple days," she said. Within a few days her creative crusts grabbed the attention of Anna Sui, one of New York City's most recognized fashion designers."First thing I said, was how can I confirm this is really you," she stated. "I found out she wanted to use the pies in New York Spring Fashion Week."It took Freidt more than 15 hours to make the pie fashions now garnering national attention."She used the pies prominently in her media, I was shocked," she said. But Freidt hasn't forgotten those here at home. She's already raised more than ,000 for the Peninsula Food Bank, auctioning off her decadent designs."It makes me feel we are all in this together, and the world is so much smaller then you realize," said Freidt. To donate to the Karen's cause for the food bank, click here. LINWOOD, Kan. – A former animal control officer is fighting with the City of Linwood, Kansas, for a family pet — a pet pot-bellied pig. His name is Dude and he's a 6-year-old Juliana pot-bellied pig. He's the newest member of Bailey Parker's menagerie at her home. He shares the yard with two ducks, four chickens, and occasionally the family's two dogs and cat. "I talk to them all like they're my children. Like, this is my family," Parker said. Dude even comes inside the house, too. Parker said he's more intelligent than her dogs, which the general public doesn't realize. Parker adopted him a few months ago from a goat farm, where he wasn't getting the specific care he needed. According to the City, Dude is livestock and not allowed inside city limits. "I would have never brought him in if I thought he was livestock or swine. A pot-bellied pig is not livestock," Parker said. She's asking the City to amend the ordinance or have the City issue her a special permit. The City refused a few months ago, but Parker and her attorneys returned to the city council meeting on Dec. 17. The City again denied the request and now Parker's attorneys, Tristen Woods and Lauren Kruskall, are taking the City to court in January. If they lose a bench trial, Woods said they will take it further to a jury trial in Leavenworth County. "At some point, we felt as a city we have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise you're going to start seeing people with horses and cows and sheep and everything else saying they're pets," said Brian Christenson, mayor of Linwood. Christenson said he's not against the pig, but laws are laws. The City recently amended the same animal control ordinance to allow pit bulls and chickens, of which Christenson said Parker has taken advantage. "The biggest problem we have, we don't have the resources, the animal control, all the things we would have to start adding these exotic animals," Christenson said. Not long after Parker adopted him, Dude got out of the yard and wandered to the park across the street because her kids accidentally left the fence open. Christenson said it took four people two hours to wrangle the pig, but Parker said it wasn't a big deal and she has since made provisions to prevent it from happening again. "We don't have animal control officers. We don't know what kind of medicines [pigs] have, what shots they're supposed to have," said Christenson. "It's just more work added that we'd have to do." Parker said Dude is well taken care of and isn't a nuisance. "If I have the means to give them something, I want to be able to help them and I don’t think I should be told what I can and can’t have in my backyard," said Parker. Parker has gathered around 50 signatures on a permit from people who support her request. Nearby DeSoto, Kansas, allows pot-bellied pigs as pets. Kansas City, Missouri, allows pot-bellied pigs, too. Bonner Springs doesn't have any language on the books about pot-bellied pigs, but the city council is taking up the topic at its next meeting on Jan. 13. Eudora and Olathe don't have language on pot-bellied pigs, either. In Shawnee and Olathe, pot-bellied pig owners need a special animal permit. This story was originally published by Sarah Plake at KSHB. 3272
