SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An apologetic teenage girl explained how she crashed her mother’s car into her neighbor’s garage in Encanto Friday.13-year-old Akasha Alexander had been taught how to start the BMW in the morning to help her mother. On Friday, the car was parked a big too close to the edge of a steep hill. The girl pulled the clutch and the car took off, crashing through the neighbor’s fence, clipping a water line, and ending up in the garage.“I see the fence go down and i'm like, oh no, and then all I see is boom,” said Alexander.Neighbor Melvin Glover’s daughter and grandchildren are visiting him for Easter. They said the impact shook the Glover home and frightened them all.The car was towed from the home.Alexander said she plans to bake Glover a red velvet cake. 784

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Young Marine from San Diego won a scholarship to escort WWII veterans to Iwo Jima and Guam in Spring of 2021."I was just blown away because I'm not only so excited to go to Iwo Jima and Guam and experience the culture and immerse myself but also being able to escort a veteran. That is just something that is a once in a lifetime opportunity," Sophia Righthouse, 17, said. The trip is part of the Young Marines' annual "Reunion of Honor." The week-long trip brings WWII veterans back to the islands they fought on so many years ago and educates Young Marines on history, culture, and leadership. The trip happens each March, and in 2021 the pandemic is putting it at risk. Righthouse isn't worried. "I know the government is working with Japan right now to make sure we can go over," she says.Righthouse won the Jimmy Trimble Scholarship from the American Veterans Center. The scholarship is named after a young athlete who gave up the opportunity to play professional baseball to join the Marines.Trimble died in battle on Iwo Jima on March 1, 1945, at 19-years-old.Righthouse exemplifies Trimble's "finest qualities" needed to earn the scholarship. You may recognize her name from her heroism in 2018 when she evacuated people in an apartment complex that was on fire. She earned an award from the San Diego Fire Department, and a day named in her honor by San Diego City Council. She's won the National Honor Society Volunteer Service Award for completing more than 1,300 hours of community service.Righthouse excelled in cheerleading, dance, and in the Young Marines. Her uniform is adorned with dozens of badges, and medals."Honestly I think it's my family and my friends that push me to strive every single day to be the best person I can possibly be," she said. She found her calling as a Young Marine when she was 8-years-old at a parade."As an 8-year-old you don't see anything like that in the world, other than in the actual military. So I saw them marching, they were all uniformed and disciplined and I said I want to do something like that," she said with a smile. She joined the Young Marines that year and has been in the program for nine years."It's a really great program to strengthen your leader inside of you and bring out the natural born leader that we all have," she said. This trip will be one of her last before she graduates high school. She applied to several military academies and colleges and hopes to make a positive impact on the world as an Operations Officer. When asked what she wants San Diegans to know about her journey, she said "one of the biggest things I've learned, even though I'm 17, is just trust the process and believe in yourself." 2701

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – An emotional sentencing hearing was held downtown Tuesday for a driver behind a fatal Chollas View crash last March. In March, 36-year-old Jacqueline Castillo reportedly had drugs in her system when blew through an intersection in Chollas View, slamming her car into another car, killing 62-year-old Brenda Lee.“I want to put a face to that name. Brenda Doreen Lee was my sister,” said Lee’s brother, Ronnie Lee, as he held her framed photo up for the courtroom and Castillo to see. “You made choices to get loaded. You made choices to drive on a suspended licensed. You made a choice to drive erratically."The crash happened in the early afternoon by an elementary school. Castillo later pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter. “The horrifying images I saw will never be removed from my mind,” said Lee’s son, Myrell Johns. He fought off tears as he described how his family’s life has been destroyed. “I often think about my mother's terrifying thoughts that may have occurred moments before and after the impact of this person's vehicle plowing through my mother's driver side door." Judge Laura Halgren sentenced Castillo to six years in prison. “We're all human but I believe that every mistake doesn't deserve forgiveness,” Johns told the courtroom. 1284

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego-based company is ramping up its production of ventilators to meet rising demand around the world. ResMed is primarily known for its devices to aid sleep apnea. However it also has a line of ventilators, which have now become their primary focus.“Our goal is to have 2 to 3 times or more of our global manufacturing capacity in a few weeks, then push beyond that,” said Mick Farrell, CEO of ResMed.Farrell says they began increasing production in January when the outbreak was spreading in China. They’ve now ramped up ventilator and ventilator mask production at all of their facilities. Farrell would not say how many they will be able to provide to American hospitals but said they have been in conversation with the federal government and other suppliers to meet the challenge. “We think between us and our competitors we can keep up on the demand that is needed for ventilators,” said Farrell. On Wednesday, San Diego County health officials said half of the region’s ventilators were currently being used but more were on the way. However, they did not provide specific numbers on how many were available. When asked if he thinks there will be enough, Rob Sills with the county’s medical operations center said, “We don’t know what the final number is going to be, we don’t know how many we are going to need. It is our desire to have enough to judiciously put in place systems so that we can distribute ventilators where they are most needed.” 1488

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A surfer was found unconscious, face down in the water near Pacific Beach early Wednesday.San Diego lifeguards were notified of the woman in her 30's just after 8 a.m. inside the surf zone at Tourmaline Surf Park.10News spoke to Jason Glover, a paddleboard surfer who set up a robot-camera on the beach to capture surf videos. One of the clips captured the audio of the exact moment bystanders found the woman unconscious.“Hey! Hey! Call 9-1-1,” they said. Fellow surfers immediately pulled her out of the water and started CPR. Lifeguards continued life-saving efforts once they arrived, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Mónica Mu?oz.The woman began breathing again and was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital, but her condition was not immediately known.“They immediately brought her in. But that’s what surfers do. Whenever there’s a crew out here, you know you’re going to be fine because everyone looks after each other,” Glover said. It's unclear what caused the woman to become unconscious. 1042
