Instead, President Trump signed an executive order for Lost Wage Assistance, while Congress is still in a stalemate over a new stimulus package.Until the president’s order kicks in, after states apply for the help and get approved, everyone on unemployment is being forced to live off their respective state's normal unemployment benefit. In many states, the average benefit payout is meager, at best.“The national average for unemployment dropped from nearly 0 a week to just 8 a week in June of this year, because so many low wage workers were losing their jobs,” said Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at The Century Foundation.Stettner has been heavily researching and analyzing unemployment benefits with the New York and D.C.-based independent think tank. Part of his research and analysis shows low-wage workers could be getting far less than that average state weekly benefit. For example, in a state like Hawaii, some low wage workers could be getting the state’s minimum payout of just a week right now. In other states like Louisiana, Connecticut, North Carolina, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Delaware, minimums aren’t much higher, ranging between to per week.“All but nine states have minimum benefits below 0 per week,” Stettner added.Understanding states’ minimums and how little some workers could now be getting per week is important because it will impact their eligibility for the president’s executive order.“If you don’t get more than 0 in unemployment benefits a week from the state, you can’t get Trump's new Lost Wage Assistance,” explained Stettner.Lost Wage Assistance is an additional 0 a week from the federal government for those on unemployment and is supposed to be available until Dec. 27, 2020. Essentially, right now, it is the only stopgap in place to help those unemployed, but it won’t help those who may need help the most. That’s why many are urging Congress to quickly come to an agreement on the next stimulus bill that helps everyone struggling.“I think there is the will to continue federal unemployment employment benefits, Trump’s executive order. Trump’s executive order promises them through December 27, but there is not enough money to fulfill that promise. So, I think there is the will to do the right thing but there is a lot getting in the way,” said Stettner. 2718

After being cooped up for months due to COVID-19, Jason Andre is stoked to shred the curl again.This surfer, however, also has concerns about getting back to the beach.“I feel pretty trepidatious about going to any open beaches,” he said.While Andre scouts the best breaks up and down the East Coast, he’s also keeping an eye on coronavirus concerns in his home state of North Carolina.“Things are actually kind of reaching new peaks as far as infection rates and hospitalizations,” he said. “So, it’s a little weird.”Weird and potentially dangerous.With summer here and cities lifting their restrictions, more lifeguards are experiencing more challenges.“We had like 48 water rescues for the weekend,” said Cpt. Tony Wallace of the Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue team.He says strong rip currents have kept his crew busy with rescues and that COVID-19 has changed how his team now handles medical responses.“We have stopped mouth-to-mouth resuscitation,” Wallace said. “So, now we go to a bag valve mask to assist in breathing if need be.”Across the country on the Pacific Coast, lifeguards are working to protect the public and ensure social distancing.“We like to do what we call preventive action work were we direct people to safe areas on the beach before they get into trouble,” said Lt. AKRON, Ohio — One couple is accusing a haunted house in Akron, Ohio of subjecting patrons to a mock rape scene without asking their permission or having them sign a waiver."There was a man in a mask standing over my boyfriend, my boyfriend was on the edge and he was being pushed down," said Sarah Lelonek."She comes over and yells, 'Stop, what are you doing? That's my boyfriend,' " said Lelonek's boyfriend Ryan Carr. "'Not anymore, he's mine now I'm going to rape him' and then he started thrusting against me."The couple says this all went down at the Akron Fright Fest, which is housed on the Kim Tam Park property. They say this is not the special haunted house where you had to sign a waiver to enter, although they do offer a haunted house like that on the property. Lelonek and Carr aren't the only ones complaining about this rape scenario.One Facebook user wrote "It was 100 percent a rape scene," and someone else said, "They did have a mock rape scene in one of the houses."A different viewer sent WEWS television station reporters a private Facebook message and wrote, "They grabbed my ankles and shins and pulled my legs apart and was thrusting while telling me to scream papa."WEWS reached out to the haunted house manager over Facebook, but he did not respond to the message.
