DENVER — A mom-to-be is counting her blessings after receiving a generous tip from “Catfish” host Nev Schulman, who has the same birthday as her due date.Zulia Reyes works at the Smashburger at the Denver International Airport. She’s been a server for nearly a decade and has worked at the burger restaurant for more than a year.She said she’s met celebrities while working, but her connection with Schulman took it to another level when he asked her when she was due.“I told him Sept. 26," she said. "He’s like, 'That’s my birthday.'”Reyes is 32 weeks pregnant. The two took a picture and after Schulman left, Reyes discovered a big surprise on the table.“The tip was 6 — for my due date, which is Sept. 26, which is his birthday,” Reyes said. “It means the world to my baby and my family. We never expected this to happen to us.”Schulman left a note at the end of the receipt reading, "Congrats on your baby girl! Fingers crossed for 9/26, Nev.”Through tears, Reyes admitted she had lost hope on Monday.“I had one of those days where nothing went right for me at work,” she said.Her husband is out of work as they prepare for the arrival of baby Zulia. In April, Reyes was laid off for nearly a month from Smashburger. She felt relief when she was called back for work but said she was “petrified” of the risk of COVID-19.Reyes said the good deed came during a time of need and called it a "blessing." She said the extra money will help with rent and baby essentials.Reyes said she reached out to thank Schulman on Instagram.The virtual edition of "Catfish" launched on MTV Wednesday. DENVER, Colorado – The man suspected of killing his wife and two daughters last week is likely to be formally charged today by Weld County prosecutors.The district attorney’s office has until 3:30 p.m. Mountain Time today to file formal charges against 33-year-old Chris Watts in the case. He was arrested late last Wednesday for investigation of first-degree murder and tampering with deceased body charges and has been held without bond.His pregnant wife and daughters, 34-year-old Shanann Watts, 3-year-old Celeste and 4-year-old Bella, were reported missing last Monday by a family friend after Shanann missed a doctor’s appointment.A day after the three were reported missing, Chris Watts gave an interview to KMGH television station in which he pleaded for the girls to come home and said he and his wife “had an emotional conversation” before he allegedly last saw her. Watts confessed to killing the three of them, two law enforcement sources told Denver7 last week.Shanann’s body was discovered in a field on Anadarko Petroleum Company property. Court documents show her body was found in a "shallow grave near an oil tank." Her daughter’s bodies were discovered concealed within oil tanks nearby, sources told KMGH television station. Court documents filed late last week show experts were advised the bodies were in tanks filled with crude oil "for several days." Chris Watts had been an Anadarko employee but was fired by the company Wednesday.On Friday, the coroner's office announced they had positively identified the bodies as those of Shanann Watts and her two daughters. The manner and cause of death of all three bodies are pending further laboratory results and have not been released at this time.A court motion filed by Watts’ defense attorneys late last week suggested the girls were possibly strangled. In the motion, the attorneys had asked a judge to compel the coroner to take DNA swabs from the necks and throats of the two girls, though the judge dismissed the motion. A judge also denied a request from the defense to allow an expert to be present at autopsies.Weld County prosecutors said in court last week they believed the two girls and their mother were killed inside the home but did not elaborate. Frederick police said Friday they still had several days of interviews to complete before Monday's deadline.The case has been sealed since late last Wednesday while the police investigation continued. The arrest affidavit in the case could be unsealed after charges are filed Monday, and could provide more details about the case not previously known by the public.KMGH in Denver will have more coverage of what charges Watts faces and any more details unveiled by the court documents, if they are unsealed, later Monday.Watts is scheduled to appear in court at 10:30 a.m. MT on Tuesday to learn what formal charges he might face in the case. 2905

DENVER, Colo. -- Jason McBride has been handing out backpacks full of school supplies to the kids in the Denver, Colorado community he grew up in.“Two sets of pencils, erasers, ruler, everything is in here,” McBride said.He’s the founder of a community organization called The McBride Impact that aims to help kids in Black and brown communities achieve equity, equality, employment and education. One of his current missions is to set up learning pods.“Our kids in our community are already behind, and most of our families don’t have the luxury of having a two-parent household where one parent stays home and can keep track of those kids," McBride said. "A lot of our households are single parents, or if they are two parents, both parents have to work.”A learning pod – also referred to as a pandemic pod – is a small, in-person group of students learning together with the help of an in-person tutor, teacher, or caregiver. They’ve been popping up across the nation as many schools aren’t offering in-person classes.McBride says it’s all about having a safe space.“If we just kind of let these kids kind of hang out and walk neighborhoods, they’re not going to be safe," McBride said. "So, we need to offer them somewhere where they can come in, and get their work done, get help, but have a safe place where they can do that.”The nationwide pandemic pod popularity really took off after the creation of a Pandemic Pod Facebook group in San Francisco founded by Lian Chikako Chang.“We do think that what’s happening now is not the best solution," Chang said. "We think it is in many ways a worst-case scenario. It’s private, ad-hoc solutions that are not frankly equitable, but they do have the capacity to help children of all income levels.”Different communities have different needs, and that’s why Nikolai Pizarro de Jesus created the BIPOC-led Pandemic Pods Facebook group. BIPOC stands for Black-Indigenous People of Color.She says the main pandemic pod group wasn’t fitting the needs of the Black and brown demographic.“I saw that the demographic was different; the narrative was a little bit different from my market, the price point of the teachers was different from my market,” Pizarro de Jesus said.According to Pizarro de Jesus, the flexibility of work and ability to pay for care contribute to the challenges faced by Black and brown parents right now. However, she says the racial equity divide isn’t an issue of pandemic pods.“The truth is that the existing educational system prior to the pandemic was already not working for Black and brown children.”Pizarro de Jesus says all working parents are trying to come up with solutions to support their kids, and those solutions may vary between communities. For McBride’s community, that means using volunteers, retired teachers and community members as caregivers.“Our learning pod will be free. That will be no cost to the community. And we have some excellent teachers that are involved with students in these schools already who have committed to saying ‘we will do this, and we will be there to help these students,’” McBride said.McBride says he believes learning pods are a way to give Black and brown students an opportunity to succeed. As someone who trains parents how to go from public school to homeschooling, Pizarro de Jesus says she’s already seen the positive impact learning pods can have on its students.“I will say that a lot of children inside of pods and homeschooling coops end up thriving because they’re getting one-on-one care because they’re not being measured with the same metrics, because they’re not being graded, not being subjected to standardized testing because they’re not walking through school metal detectors every day,” Pizarro de Jesus said.And when it comes to education in general, McBride says investing in marginalized communities will make it more equitable for all. He says he believes this disruption in our schooling routine is a chance to make a change.“It’s a simple thing. Make that investment, and bring these kids the same thing that other kids are afforded in other communities,” McBride said. 4123

  

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has presented a broad—and expensive—set of housing policy prescriptions. Some commentators have called them a “comprehensive plan” for housing, while others say Biden is throwing big money at real problems without offering practical solutions.Either way, the Biden campaign’s housing plan is a wish list. All in all, Biden’s housing policy proposals would cost 0 billion over 10 years, although he has not detailed where any of this funding would come from.The Biden plan would put 0 billion into an “Affordable Housing Fund,” the bulk of which ( billion) would provide incentives to develop and rehabilitate low-cost housing where there’s a shortage.“These funds will be directed toward communities that are suffering from an affordability crisis and are willing to implement new zoning laws that encourage more affordable housing,” according to Biden’s plan.Biden’s Plans Would Boost Section 8 AvailabilityThe plan also calls to expand the Section 8 housing choice voucher program, the largest federal housing program for low-income renters. Biden would make Section 8 an entitlement, thus ensuring vouchers to all eligible people.Currently, only 1 in 5 eligible households receive assistance, with waiting times pushing two years in some places. Some 2 million households receive Section 8 vouchers, but that’s not enough to meet demand.“Expanding vouchers to all those eligible will need to be matched with a strong, national measure to include ‘source of income’ as a protected class under fair housing law,” says Miriam Axel-Lute, editor of Shelterforce, a nonprofit publication published by the National Housing Institute.In addition, Axel-Lute says, reducing exclusionary zoning policies, which ban construction of multi family homes, would expand the home selection for families with vouchers.Biden also would push for a law that would ban discrimination against tenants who use Section 8 vouchers or receive other federal housing benefits.Biden Would Restore Fair Housing RulesBiden has pledged to reinstate the Obama administration’s Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) rule. The Trump administration only recently terminated the rule, which required towns and cities that received HUD funding to create plans to eliminate housing descrimination in their localities.Critics of AFFH have said there were too many hoops to jump through in order to get funding, while proponents have defended the initiative as being an integral step in promoting fair housing policies.Maintaining the Obama-era rule would help push forward housing equity, says Bruce Dorpalen, executive director of the National Housing Resource Center.“Biden’s proposal shows that there is institutional racism and biases we need to change. If we want to reestablish the Black middle class in this country, homeownership has to be part of that,” Dorpalen says. ”The Biden housing platform has that built-in.”President Trump has falsely stated that the AFFH rule would have “required high-density zoning, eliminated single-family zoning, and destroyed our suburbs.” The rule does not mandate any particular solution to discrimination or unfair practices; it just requires that each community identify the problems and come up with a workable solution.Solomon Greene, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, a Washington D.C.-based think tank, says that AFFH holds municipalities accountable if they want to receive federal dollars, but doesn’t tell them how to do it.“The 2015 AFFH rule offers guidance, not a particular solution,” says Greene, who was part of the HUD team that wrote the rule in 2015. “Every plan I’ve reviewed has been incredibly diverse; there was a huge range of strategies depending on the area. This is very far from Trump’s assertion that the AFFH rule was requiring rezoning of suburbs or even to build affordable housing.”Fight Single-Family Zoning to Expand Housing and Curb DiscriminationThe U.S. faces a shortage of housing, running 19% below last year’s supply. Although new construction was up in July, the housing market needs more positive growth to reach balanced levels, says Lawrence Yun, chief economist at the National Association of Realtors (NAR).The housing shortage is the most pronounced in the West, according to data from NAR.Experts on both sides of the aisle have called for a ban on single-family zoning, which is said to drive up home prices and restrict new construction, contributing to the housing shortage.A story by Charles Marohn published in The New Conservative says about single-family zoning: “After all, there is no greater distortion of the market than local zoning codes, and there are few bureaucracies doing more harm to property rights and freedom than local zoning offices.”Biden addresses zoning issues several times in his housing plan when it concerns discrimination or where federal grant money is involved.The Biden plan would seek to “eliminate local and state housing regulations that perpetuate discrimination.” More specifically, a Biden administration would require states receiving community development or transportation block grants from the federal government dollars through Community Development Block Grants or Surface Transportation Block Grants to incorporate inclusionary zoning into their planning. Inclusionary zoning requires that a portion of new construction is set aside for affordable housing.Biden also would allocate billion for state housing authorities and the Indian Housing Block Grant program to build and restore housing in low-income areas. This money would go to communities “that are suffering from an affordability crisis and are willing to implement new zoning laws that encourage more affordable housing.”Ed Pinto, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a right-leaning think tank, doesn’t believe that Biden’s plan goes far enough to eradicate single-family zoning. According to Pinto, single-family zoning promotes “NIMBYism,” an acronym for “not in my backyard.”“We have supply constraints because of terrible zoning policies,” Pinto says. “Single-family zoning promotes NIMBYism, which drives house prices up tremendously in low-cost areas. None of the things in Biden’s proposal would make things better. You still end up with a housing shortage, nowhere to build and federally guaranteed loans that increase demand against limited supply.”Eliminate Biased Housing Practices and Expanding AffordabilityThe Biden housing plan sets a goal to stamp out racially biased practices like redlining, which denies people services or charges more for those services based on race, religion or ethnicity. Furthermore, the Biden plan wants to ensure that Americans spend no more than 30% of their income on housing, which would help people in all income brackets. These ideas would be achieved by enacting legislation similar to the “Housing, Opportunity, Mobility, and Equity (HOME) Act.”The HOME Act would give a refundable tax credit to people who spend more than 30% of their income on rent. It also would require inclusionary zoning—a requirement that developers set aside a percentage of units that would be rented or sold at reduced prices—which would help increase affordable housing construction while also knocking out housing discrimination based on race and income.The Biden plan also would target unfair property appraisals, which values Black-owned homes at tens of thousands of dollars less than comparable white-owned homes. A study by the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institute found that homes of matching quality and amenities in predominantly Black neighborhoods were valued at 23% less than in those neighborhoods with fewer Black residents.“Anti-discrimination legislation, like ending redlining—which Biden proposes—in housing is crucial,” David Dworkin, CEO of the National Housing Conference, a nonprofit, nonpartisan coalition of national housing leaders from both the public and private sector, says. “What Biden is proposing would help millions of Americans. There’s a disturbing element of ‘I’ve got mine, too bad for you.’ Some people say, ‘I put 20% down on the house, why can’t you?’Bottom LineBiden’s housing plan aims to reduce or eliminate discriminatory practices in the housing industry through legislation and expanded funding, from reinstating Fair Housing Rules to broadening programs that would help low-income families.However, while Biden’s vision of fair and affordable housing is both admirable and needed, critics say that he’s doing little more than throwing money at big problems, such as the lack of affordable housing.“Biden has one solution to every problem: he’s going to spend more money on it. DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) - About 400 horses displaced by the Lilac Fire will move back to their original home at San Luis Rey Downs next week, according to trainers at the Del Mar Racetrack.The horses have been living in Del Mar's stables since the fire tore through the downs on December 7. Nearly 50 horses died in the fire, and several trainers and stable workers were also injured.Del Mar has become their second home in the four months since."I joke that it's like losing your home and being put up in a proper hotel,"' says trainer Ed Freeman.He has 16 horses living at Del Mar and says he's not sure what the emotions will be like returning to the site of one of the worst days of his life."I'm a little worried it will be stressful for the workers," Freeman says. "Our barn isn't there, we'll be in a new spot. But it's still going back to the scene of the crime."Del Mar racing officials had targeted mid-April for the move-out. They need their stables back to begin preparations for this summer's racing season. Nearly 3200 horses will be using the track to train and race over the next few months."It's vital for Del Mar for people to have a place to bring in young horses that are going to be beneficial during our race season," says Racing Secretary David Jerkens.But, he adds, Del Mar was happy to help out."Sometimes it takes a tragedy to see the good in people," says Jerkens.A GoFundMe page run by Del Mar and Santa Anita Racetrack helped raise more than 0,000 to take care of the horses, trainers and workers displaced by the fire. And in the weeks following the fire, hundreds of people volunteered at the stable to take care of the horses. Trainers say they're humbled by the support they got and had nothing but high praise for Del Mar as they get ready to leave."I definitely think they looked out for everyone's best interest," says Adam Kitchingman, with First Home Thoroughbreds.
