ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Plans are underway to reinvigorate Escondido's historic downtown, with new businesses and plans to make the area more pedestrian friendly. One of the new ventures is the first-of-its-kind. "Escondido now has really started to invest a lot of time, a lot of effort, and they're putting a lot of money into the downtown district," said Nick Corona, a nationally recognized homebrewer who lives in San Marcos.When Corona started homebrewing in 2012, the dream was always to start a brewery, which he named Five Suits Brewing. Now that dream is coming true in a way he couldn't have envisioned back then. "We're looking to hopefully become a little bit more of a draw for Escondido."The plan is to house four different businesses under one roof, three of which are craft beverage manufacturers: beer, gin, and mead.The gin distillery is Stoke Distilling Co. and the meadery is Good Omen. "Nobody else in California and I don't even think in the U.S., has a storefront place that you can go to that has a brewery, a winery, and a distillery, with a restaurant all in the same location," said Brian LaMere, Owner of Good Omen.The owners of Carlsbad's Notorious Burgers will be supplying the food, which will consist of craft tacos and Mexican street food. The project is still waiting on approval from the alcohol and beverage agencies, but Corona says they've identified a 14,000 sq/ft property on Grand Ave. "It will be a destination, there's no doubt about it," said Corona. As far as making downtown more friendly to pedestrians, city planners say there are plans to widen the sidewalks, create more parking, and add art. Corona says he's excited for the future, "We're proud of our brand, we're proud of what we're bringing, but for me personally I just want to bring people something that opens their eyes." 1842

Erie County Legislator Lynne Dixon announced a proposed expansion of 'Social Host Law' to include opioids. The original law was passed in 2014 to curb underage drinking. According to law, it "will serve to deter the consumption of alcoholic beverages by minor by holding those persons who are 21 years old or more responsible when they knowingly allow the consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors at their residences or on their privately owned property."The Erie County Sheriff's Office have been called to 81 instances of youth activity underage drinking since Jan. 1, 2017. The goal of the new expansion of the law is to hold parents and adults accountable for the actions of minors in their home or on their property for the use of underage drinking, illegal use of opioid and substances.Any person who violates the law will be fined. The first offense is punished by a fine of 0. The second offense is punished by 0. The third offense is punished by either a fine of 00 or prison for one year, or both.   1070

FALLBROOK (KGTV) - One person is dead after she was hit by a vehicle while walking along the shoulder of a road in Fallbrook with her husband.CHP officers say the 60-year-old woman was walking with her husband just after 5 p.m. northbound on the east shoulder in the 2700 block of Gird Road north of Laketree Drive. An approaching pickup truck heading northbound left the roadway and struck the woman. The truck stopped for a moment before fleeing the scene northbound on Gird Rd.North County Fire Protection District and CHP responded and crews began life saving measures at the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead. Her 60-year-old husband was not injured.The truck involved in the crash is described as an older model pickup truck that's dark in color. The truck will likely have damage to the right front side.Investigators were reviewing surveillance footage from the area to learn more about what happened.Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspected vehicle or information about the crash is asked to call CHP at 858-637-3800. 1060

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - News of an arrest in connection to a fatal cyclist hit-and-run crash came as the victim's family mourned together on his favorite holiday. "Can't stop thinking about him and about that day," said Marc Engelhardt.Engelhardt calls the last week all-consuming and painful, since the moment he doubled back during a six-hour bike ride to see what was keeping his friends - only to discover the horrific aftermath. His friend Kevin Lentz, 36, a husband and new father, was struck and killed on an Escondido street, hit head-on by a dark sedan which promptly took off."Disbelief, surreal," said Engelhardt.RELATED: Friends mourn bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crashPolice say they discovered the heavily damaged car about a half mile away. On Thanksgiving, they announced the arrest of a suspect, 41-year-old Jamison Connor, on an unrelated parole warrant related to weapons, drugs and DUI charges."Certainly a sense of relief," said Engelhardt.Engelhardt says news of the arrest came as Lentz's family came together."Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday. He's a food guy. Yesterday was a special time for them ... They were trying to focus on how great Kevin was. Emotionally exhausting is probably the best way to put it, all these mixed feelings ... Very difficult. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Construction is underway on bike and pedestrian improvement projects in North San Diego County.Paths will be built beneath the Interstate 5 overpasses at Santa Fe Drive and Encinitas Blvd.The work, which will cost .5 million, should be finished in late summer 2019.During construction, drivers can expect traffic delays. There will also be periodic noise and lights.“Construction activities have been designed to reduce impacts to anyone using these intersections,” said Caltrans Project Manager Arturo Jacobo. “While there will be narrowed lanes, we do not anticipate any lane closures during construction. Additionally, we are installing a temporary protected path for pedestrians and people on bikes, which now only exists along westbound Santa Fe Drive.”The projects are part of the North Coast Corridor Program, which will eventually add carpool lanes to I-5, double track the coastal rail corridor, provide walking and biking trails, and complete environmental restoration. 1017
