Just days after the mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, a makeshift memorial with flowers and stuffed animals continues to grow.But that’s not the only sign of support arriving in this small town east of San Antonio.Mary Beth Fisk is the CEO of a San Antonio-based counseling and education non-profit called The Ecumenical Center. She and her team have been on the ground since Sunday night to provide counseling to victims and family member, particularly children.“Everybody’s grief journey is unique to them,” Fisk said. “It’s important to have someone who’s trained to walk through this complicated grief process with these families.”Fisk was nearby near the makeshift memorial on Tuesday, around for anyone who may need to talk.While Fisk spends time next to the flowers at the corner outside the church, across the street on another corner Donna Watkins was setting up a table of stuffed animals she brought with her from her home in Corpus Christi.Watkins is with the Homicide Survivors Support Group. She says she lost her brother decades ago and that gives her a unique perspective from which to assist.“It’s the most traumatic, worst thing that a family can ever go through. There is no way that unless you have walked through their shoes that you know where they’re coming from.”Up the road about 15 miles is the small, one-room St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. One of its 27 congregants is Paula Reinecke.  They were still in church services in the nearby town of Adkins this Sunday when they heard the sirens heading to the scene in Sutherland Springs.Almost immediately, she and her husband, having both recently finished culinary school and having assisted in Hurricane Harvey at similar events, decided to put their skills to use.“In Texas, we barbecue,” Reinecke said. “It’s a comfort food here.”They—and their newly-formed organization they call “Smokin’ Angels BBQ Ministry"—are hosting a barbecue benefit event this Saturday on the grounds of the church. They posted about the event on Facebook Sunday night, and, as Reinecke said, overnight “it kind of exploded.”They’re already gotten hundreds of calls, texts, and Facebook messages with offers of money, barbecue pits, even a walk-in cooler for the weekend; not to mention they’ve already received over 3,000 pounds of pork.“Being Texans, we jump in and save each others’ backs. Judge Stephen Reinhardt, a liberal federal appeals court judge who was part of a panel that rejected California's Proposition 8 same-sex marriage ban as unconstitutional, died Thursday, according to a court spokesperson. He was 87.Reinhardt, who served on the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, died of a heart attack during a visit to his dermatologist, according to spokesman David Madden.One of the last remaining federal judges appointed by then-President Jimmy Carter, nearly four decades ago, Reinhardt emerged as a staunch critic of the Trump administration's deportation policies and travel ban in the final years of his life."We have lost a wonderful colleague and friend. As a judge, he was deeply principled, fiercely passionate about the law and fearless in his decisions," Chief Judge Sidney R. Thomas of the 9th Circuit said in a statement."He will be remembered as one of the giants of the federal bench. He had a great life that ended much too soon," Thomas said.Trump has slammed the court as being liberal and a symbol of "a broken and unfair" court system.Reinhardt's passing leaves a progressive vacancy on the court for Trump to potentially fill with a conservative vote.Reinhardt was born in New York in 1931. He earned a bachelor's degree from Pomona College in 1951 and a law degree from Yale Law School in 1954, according his biography. In 1979, former President Jimmy Carter appointed him to the appeals court, which is based in San Francisco.Reinhardt's big moment in history would come three decades after his appointment.In 2012, he was part of a three-judge panel that struck down California's voter-approved Proposition 8, arguing that the ban unconstitutionally singled out gays and lesbians for discrimination.In a split decision, the panel found that Proposition 8 "works a meaningful harm to gays and lesbians" by denying their right to civil marriage in violation of the 14th Amendment.Five years later, Reinhardt would become critical of the Trump administration.In March 2017, he had some pointed words for President Donald Trump in an opinion issued when the 9th Circuit refused to rehear the travel ban case."I am proud to be a part of this court and a judicial system that is independent and courageous," wrote Reinhardt, "and that vigorously protects the constitutional rights of all, regardless of the source of any efforts to weaken or diminish them."In May 2017, Reinhardt slammed the Trump administration's deportation policies. KILLEEN, Texas — Officials at Fort Hood say they have formally opened an investigation into allegations that Pfc. Vanessa Guillen was sexually harassed prior to her disappearance.Guillen was last seen at Fort Hood on April 22 between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of her Regimental Engineer Squadron Headquarters. She hasn't been seen or heard from since.The announcement comes days after officials at Fort Hood said there was no credible evidence of sexual assault against Guillen.Third Cavalry Regiment commander, Col. Ralph Overland, has appointed an investigating team to look into the allegations. The investigators will gather the evidence and present findings to Overland for review upon completion."I opened an investigation concerning the information provided by the Guillen Family that Pfc. Vanessa Guillen was harassed prior to her disappearance," Overland said in a statement. "I take allegations of sexual harassment very seriously and we are conducting a thorough investigation."Army Criminal Investigation Command is offering a reward of up to ,000 for information regarding Guillen's whereabouts. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - A Monterey Cypress known as the “Dr. Seuss Tree” or “The Lorax Tree” toppled over early Thursday morning in La Jolla.The unique shaped tree has been theorized to be the inspiration for the colorful trees in “The Lorax,” written in 1971 by Theodor Geisel, known best as "Dr. Seuss."Geisel lived in La Jolla from 1948 until he died in 1991. The tree is located in Ellen Browning Scripps Park near La Jolla Cove.The tree had become a tourist destination for Seuss fans around the world, with its long, drooping branches and leaves.As of Thursday night the tree was still lying on the ground. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) - A life’s work of rescuing horses burned to the ground in a matter of moments due to the Valley Fire burning east of San Diego.Patty Hyslop has overseen her horse rescue, Hyslop Horse Haven, for more than 20 years. She’s had Multiple Sclerosis for just about the same amount of time. The horses she saves have kept her moving through the pain.“If it weren’t for all the rest of the horses I don’t think she would still be here today,” said Shylynn Wellman, who has grown up at the ranch and now lives on the property.When Patty saw flames quickly approaching the ranch Saturday, she tried to get as many of her 24 horses out, but wasn’t able to save all of them.“The officers were like ‘you’re going to die if you don’t leave’ and I said I don’t care, I’m going to stay with my horses,” she said.Ultimately, she was the last one to leave the property and tried to save all of the horses, but had to leave a few behind.“I was so scared I was going to come home to burned and dead horses,” she said.Miraculously, when she returned, the horses she’d left had survived. Most of her ranch had not.In total, eight tack sheds filled with hundreds of thousands of dollars in horse supplies burned. The golf cart she uses to get around the large property, a huge help because of her MS, was a pile of melted metal. A majority of her property was blacked with ash as well. Despite the destruction, she still feels blessed.“I think it was a lot of luck. I think the horses, between that and God blessing us with horse angels, yeah,” she said.Right now, her horses are being housed at The Lucky Seven Ranch, and she’s hoping for some donations of horse supplies or sheds to get back on her feet. This GoFundMe has been set up to help the rescue ranch. Patty said her goal is to rebuild and continue inspiring people to save horses.“These kids come to me and say I want to grow up to be like you, I want to know as much as you do, I want to help horses, too. Oh it just fills my heart with joy,” she said. 2022
