Passengers with peanut and tree-nut allergies will soon have the option to board American Airlines flights early to wipe down seating areas of potential allergens.The new policy goes into effect December 12 as flight-service manuals are updated."American Airlines customers with nut allergies who would like to board our flights early to wipe down surfaces may ask to do so at the gate," said American Airlines spokeswoman Michelle Mohr. The policy was first reported by Bloomberg.Passengers are free to wipe down their seating areas of potential allergens at any time, but the new policy gives extra consideration to concerned allergy sufferers."I certainly understand the deep, deep concern people have, especially parents with young children," Mohr said. Mohr herself suffers from a severe nut allergy and carries an EpiPen.The airline encourages passengers to take all necessary medical precautions before flying, she said.American Airlines hasn't served peanuts in years, but it does serve a combination of warm mixed nuts to First and Business class passengers on trans-oceanic flights, Mohr said. That mixture does not contain peanuts.But the airline cannot guarantee that customers won't be exposed to peanuts or tree nuts on any flight as passengers may bring their own snacks aboard or transfer nut residue from other places.The new policy was included in a filing with the U.S. Transportation Department on November 6. It comes in response to a complaint filed last year by Food Allergy Research & Education and the mother of a child with a dangerous peanut allergy, Bloomberg reported.Mohr dismissed any notion that passengers who do not suffer from allergies might take advantage of the policy."We do not expect rampant abuse of this policy. We do not believe our customers will fake a potentially life-threatening allergy just to board the plane a little bit faster," she said.Southwest Airlines stopped serving peanuts on all flights this summer.When notified of a passenger allergy, Delta Air Lines will not serve peanuts or related products on specific flights. Police in Illinois have deemed a local man a hero after he raced to rescue a man from a burning vehicle on Sunday evening.According to the Aurora Police Department's Facebook page, a 57-year-old man rushed to the rescue after a single-car crash just after midnight on Saturday. Dash cam video from the crash shows the man dragging the driver away from the car by his legs as flames shoot out of the driver's side window.According to Aurora police, it was 58-year-old Jose Martinez who rushed out of his home to save the driver, a 34-year-old man. A second man, 29-year-old Devin Johnson, also helped by pulling the man away from the car.  "To say Jose's actions were heroic and brave are an understatement. Had he not taken immediate action, the driver would not have lived," the department wrote on Facebook. " Devin should also be commended for assuring the man was out of harm's way. PALA MESA, CA (KGTV) -- 10News is now digging deeper in the history of violations issued to the company that operated the bus that was involved in this rainy Saturday's deadly crash on I-15 just south of Pala Mesa. “One life lost is too many,” says Chris Turner with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. We spoke to him over FaceTime on Monday. The bus was operated by Executive Lines Inc., based in El Monte. According to the federal administration that oversees bus inspections, the company's fleet has had no crashes over the past two years, until now. However, they have had 26 maintenance violations, reportedly. After a November 2019 inspection, the same bus that was involved in this weekend's crash was reportedly issued two violations related to windshield wipers and spare fuses. Turner says violations like those should’ve been fixed right away. “Those need to be remedied before the vehicle is dispatched again,” he adds.10News spoke to attorney Nathan Morris about a separate major bus crash that happened last September in Utah, injuring 22 tourists. He's representing seven of the victims. “[I’m representing] three of those who were killed in the crash and their families as well as four others who were injured to various degrees,” he adds.Morris says bus passengers can look online for a snapshot of a company's safety. “They have a right as passengers of that bus to make sure that the driver and the companies and anybody else are held accountable for keeping the rules,” he says.“You enter the company's USDOT number and it will tell you whether or not they’re a safe company,” says Turner of researching bus companies online. A USDOT number is issued by the Department of Transportation. If you can’t find it on a company’s website, Turner says you can make a phone call. He adds, “One of the things they should readily give you when asked is the USDOT number and if not, that's immediately a red flag. PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer has been fatally shot and another was injured in an exchange of gunfire at an Arkansas hotel. Pine Bluff Chief Kelvin Sergeant says Officer Kevin Collins was killed in the shooting Monday afternoon at the EconoLodge in Pine Bluff, about 40 miles southeast of Little Rock. Lt. Ralph Isaac was also injured in the shooting and is in stable condition. Police say the shooting involved three officers and one suspect. Authorities have provided no details about the suspect or investigation, including whether any arrests have been made. Collins was with the department for five years. 645
