BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 135 people had been confirmed dead and 41 are missing, as some of the worst flooding in years continues in south China.By 4 p.m. Thursday, close to 35.5 million people in 10 southern provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by continuous rainstorms and floods since July 1, the Civil Affairs Ministry said in a notice on its website.About 113,000 homes were destroyed and more than 1.2 million people had been relocated, it said.Direct economic losses were estimated at about 26 billion yuan (3.8 billion U.S. dollars), up from Wednesday's 22.2 billion yuan.In Jiangxi Province alone, at least eight people have died since July 8, and direct economic losses have amounted to more than 2.9 billion yuan. The ministry had dispatched work groups to Jiangxi to direct relief work. The Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters announced earlier Thursday that floods had killed 594 people in 26 provinces since the beginning of the year. Another 212 people were missing.Direct economic losses cause by the floods totaled 120.2 billion yuan, the office said, adding that 97.5 million people and 6.16 million hectares of farmland were affected. In Hubei Province, continuous downpours and rain-triggered floods since July 3 have left 32 people dead and two missing.Heavy rainfall has raised water levels in many rivers in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, China's longest, and a new round of rainstorm is expected to pelt the river course soon, bringing possibility of serious floods. The river's Three Gorges Dam raised the speed of water discharge Thursday afternoon to save space for the upcoming gushing flooding waters.

NONG'AN, Jilin, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- With the approach of a new round of torrential rains, the country roads in flood-ravaged Nong'an County in northeast China were packed with villagers fleeing their homes Wednesday.Traveling aboard tractors, trucks, mini-buses, and motorcycles, and carrying belongings such as quilts and chicken, thousands of people set off on a journey of exodus.Up to 27,000 villagers living downstream from the Songhua River in Jilin Province need to be evacuated as downpours are expected to batter Nong'an from Wednesday evening until Friday, said Wang Wei, deputy Communist Party chief of the county."Fresh downpours may lead to the breach of riverbanks and two reservoirs upstream would have to open sluices to discharge water, which would threaten the lives of residents downstream," Wang said."The mass evacuation began in the early morning today. By now, 18,000 people have moved to safety. There are still 9,000 young villagers who were asked to stay and help fortify the riverbanks," he said in the late evening.Torrential rains pounded the county one week ago, swelling the Songhua River and inundating almost 50,000 hectares of cropland, or about half of the total farming area."I really don't want to leave my home. But the village officials told me: so long as you are still alive, you will have your home again," said Yu Shutao from Liansankeng Village."I will bring my family to go to my elder brother's home in the town. As soon as the floods recede, I will come home to attend my cropland," he said.Thirty-two-year-old villager Sun Lianhua sat in a mini-bus with her dog."The dog is like a member of my family. I will bring it everywhere I go," she said.

BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese leader in charge of disciplinary and supervision work Thursday stressed the need for higher-caliber anti-graft officials in the country's fight against corruption. He Guoqiang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remark at a forum with representatives of municipal-district level anti-corruption officials. He, also head of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, told the anti-corruption officials to stand firm in their faith of socialism and remain vigilant in the fight against corruption. He said the officials should improve their work skills through theoretical studies and training. The anti-corruption officials should always be people-oriented and carefully listen to public opinion, He said.He also told the officials that it was imperative for them to be self-disciplined and clean-handed to show an example.China trained more than 2,000 anti-graft officials at county level nationwide in 2009 and over 400 officials at city level in this June.About 850 anti-graft officials at municipal-district level around China are being trained in Beijing currently.

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin said Friday that accelerating the transformation of economic growth mode was an important strategic task for China's social and economic development.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks at the four-day 10th session of the Standing Committee of 11th CPPCC National Committee, which closed Friday morning. He called for more efforts to expand domestic demand and re-adjust income distribution to foster a pattern of economic growth jointly driven by domestic demand, investment and exports.Greater efforts must also be paid to re-adjusting industrial patterns, enhancing China's innovation capacity, boosting urbanization, saving energy, and reducing emissions, he said.During the session, Standing Committee members held discussions over the drawing of China's next five-year plan for social and economic development, and offered advice to senior officials from more than 30 central ministries or commissions.Jia urged all CPPCC members to contribute to the making of the five-year plan with valuable proposals on key issues. He also called on CPPCC members and organizations at all levels to conduct surveys so as to offer solutions to major problems of the ongoing health-care reform at a lecture held by the CPPCC Standing Committee.

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- China and Britain on Monday pledged to enhance military ties. The pledge came out of the meeting between Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong and visiting British Chief of Defense Staff Jock Stirrup. The military relationship is an important component of China-Britain relations, and the two sides have witnessed frequent exchange of high-level visits and fruitful cooperation in many fields, Guo said.He said China's armed forces attached importance to the friendly cooperation with the British armed forces, and would work with it to enhance mutual trust and expand cooperation.Stirrup echoed Guo saying the military relationship was very important and the British side hoped to strengthen military cooperation with China. The two sides also discussed the development of China-Britain relations and international and regional issues of common concern.Highlighting the development of China-Britain relations in recent years, Guo said the bilateral relationship is at a new historic starting point.
