People in Idaho are walking through their future homes before the walls go up. "It's like you're really there cooking in your kitchen walking to the fridge back to the sink," said the owner of Draftech Brendan Smythe. Incorporating virtual reality into the mix can mean big bucks saved for homebuyers. There's a big demand in Idaho's Treasure Valley home market. According to data, nearly a quarter of sales are of new homes, and the cost of land and construction is rising. Some builders say nearly ,000-30,000 can be saved by making changes before the fieldwork begins."The changes and modifications they know they would've made out in the field they can make them a lot sooner, earlier on, more cost-effective up front," Smythe said. Draftech is an architecture design firm in the Treasure Valley taking their 2D drawings and blueprints and bringing them to life."You have your husband or your wife right next to you in the kitchen you get a sense of size and space," said Smythe. VR also helps all hands on deck save money and time."It saves all parties time because when you're making those changes to real estate properties or buildings while they're being built that can extend your timeline, so it can be extremely costly," said Annie Morley, the president of the Idaho Virtual Reality Council.Interior designers are also included in the VR equation so that clients can make change to surfaces and colors of their floors and cabinets inside their home with local materials readily available."In a few years I guarantee there won't be a single home designed without virtual reality," Smythe said.  1680

PHOENIX (AP) — Police served a search warrant Tuesday to get DNA from all male employees at a long-term care facility in Phoenix where a patient who had been in a vegetative state for years gave birth, triggering reviews by state agencies and putting a spotlight on safety concerns for patients who are severely disabled or incapacitated.Hacienda HealthCare said it welcomed the DNA testing of employees."We will continue to cooperate with Phoenix Police and all other investigative agencies to uncover the facts in this deeply disturbing, but unprecedented situation," the company said in a statement.Local news website Azfamily.com first reported the woman, who had been in a vegetative state for more than 10 years after a near-drowning, delivered a baby on Dec. 29. Her identity has not been reported, and it's not known if she has a family or a guardian. It's also unclear if staff members at the Hacienda de Los Angeles facility were aware of the pregnancy until the birth. In a statement, board member Gary Orman said the facility "will accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation.""We will do everything in our power to ensure the safety of every single one of our patients and our employees," Orman said.Hacienda CEO Bill Timmons stepped down Monday, spokesman David Leibowitz said. The decision was unanimously accepted by the provider's board of directors.Gov. Doug Ducey's office has called the situation "deeply troubling."Phoenix police so far have declined comment. The Hacienda facility serves infants, children and young adults who are "medically fragile" or have developmental disabilities, according to the website. In the wake of the reports, the Arizona Department of Health Services said new safety measures have been implemented. They include increased staff presence during any patient interaction, more monitoring of patient care areas and additional security measures involving visitors. The state's online complaint database for care facilities shows multiple complaints about Hacienda de Los Angeles going back to 2013. Most of them involve fire drill and evacuation preparation or Medicaid eligibility. But one complaint from December 2013 outlines an allegation that a staff member made inappropriate sexual comments about four patients two months earlier. Nobody relayed the incidents to an administrator. That employee was later fired.Martin Solomon, a personal injury attorney in Phoenix whose clients are mostly vulnerable adult victims of abuse and neglect, said a lawyer representing this woman should call for all pertinent medical records, a list of current and ex-employees and any past litigation involving Hacienda. It would be the police who would lead DNA testing to figure out who fathered the baby, Solomon said.It would be hard for Hacienda to escape any kind of liability in court."There's a lot of information we do not have, But things like this don't happen without someone either knowing about it or should have known about it," Solomon said. "Whether it's an employee or someone from the outside, the facility has an obligation to protect residents."Advocates for the disabled say Arizona needs to find a way to monitor allegations of sexual abuse and sexual violence in these group settings. Doing background checks isn't enough, said Erica McFadden, executive director of the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council."I think when you've had somebody who's had multiple allegations from different parties, there has to be some way to track that," McFadden said. "If it's the same story from different people, then there's something wrong."The council recently formed a task force to look at how to improve training for health care workers when it comes to identifying and reporting sexual abuse."We don't have a systematic way to train people what's a good touch or a bad touch. We also don't have required training for providers," McFadden said. "We really need a lot of work in this area."Jon Meyers, executive director of The Arc of Arizona, an advocacy group for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, called the allegations "disturbing, to put it mildly.""I wasn't there. I clearly don't have firsthand knowledge of what happened," Meyers said. "But I can't believe someone receiving that level of constant care wasn't recognized as being pregnant prior to the time she delivered." 4413

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Whether you're a cat person or a dog person, this story is sure to warm your heart. It has a sad start, but a heartwarming end.The Sunshine Dog Rescue based out of Phoenix rescued a dog they have named "Georgia", an Australian Shephard Mix, found living at a gas station near the US-Mexico border, by Rocky Point. They quickly learned Georgia was pregnant. Sadly, none of Georgia's puppies survived. They were all born prematurely. Anita Osa, founder of Sunshine Dog Rescue, says Georgia was heartbroken after losing all of her babies."I've never had a mom dog lose a whole litter before. The best way I could describe it was she was frantic. It was so sad, she was looking for those babies. She tore up the toddler mattress we had her on, trying to find her babies," said Osa.Hoping to start Georgia down the path of healing, Osa put out a call for help on Facebook, looking for any animals that needed a lactating mother dog. What she ended up with was a trio of newly orphaned kittens, who also needed a mother.Osa said she initially wondered if a dog would accept kittens as her babies, but she was surprised to see the instant bond they formed."I introduced them to her gently. I first bought one out and let her sniff it, and she seemed to accept it, so I brought the others out. It's amazing to see how she instantly calmed down," said Osa."I think for the kittens, they have no idea that Georgia is a dog," she added.Georgia is even allowing her new kitten kids to nurse on her, although her milk production is low."They do nurse on her. She cleans them and everything but the bond is strong. It's really something to see, she protects those kittens just as if they were her babies," said Osa. 1726

PHOENIX, Arizona — It sounds like something out of a horror movie.A colorful beetle that may look harmless, but it secretes a toxin so strong, it can even kill a horse. When it comes into contact with human skin, however, the effect of this toxin can lead to extremely painful blisters. One emergency room doctor described it as a chemical burn.Dr. Joanna Woods can describe that intense pain firsthand."I went through an entire tissue box of tissues crying my eyes out. It felt, not like an itch; it's like I put my arm on a skillet and couldn't take it off. It's just excruciatingly painful," Woods said.Woods says she feels certain she encountered the blister beetle while watching a show at a movie theater."Midway through the movie I started saying, oh I'm starting to feel a little itchy, there must be mosquitoes in here," Woods said. Then she thought it might be bed bugs.  She saw red welts on her arm as she left the movie theater, within hours those welts were turning into big, marble-sized blisters.Welt went to the pharmacy to get medicine, the pharmacist on duty advised her to go to an Urgent Care, and the Urgent Care physician advised her to go to an emergency room.Even in the emergency room, Woods said staff appeared to be stumped by the size of these huge blisters all over her arm."I had nurses in there saying I've been doing this for 35 years, I've never seen his, what is it?"Woods was hospitalized for two days due to concerns over the swelling and treat of infection.KNXV television station reached out to Eric Godinez, the owner of Scorpion King Exterminating, who said he was familiar with the colorful blister beetle."There is a time of year that blister beetles migrate through the Valley, usually through farmlands that contain alfalfa and hay," Godinez said. They are also found in backyards, where they munch on flowers and leaves.Godinez said these beetles would only attack if provoked."If you brush them off or try to squash them, they secrete a toxin that is very lethal. It will stay released for about 2-3 months even after it's dead," Godinez said.He advised leaving it alone if you happen to encounter one in your backyard.Phoenix is home to the "Master Blister Beetle."The bug has wings, and Godinez said it was a short flyer. How it got into a movie theater, or on Woods' skin is still a mystery."I just wished it had never happened. It was excruciatingly painful," Woods said. She is now talking to management at the movie theater to get to the bottom of it.Woods does admit she does have severe reactions to most bug bites, so just like anything, different people can have different reactions if exposed to the toxin from his beetle, but doctors said it lives up to its name, the blister beetle. 2805
