SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County health officials are encouraging local women to get vaccinated for "whooping cough" amid a possible epidemic. The county says pertussis, commonly known as "whooping cough," could turn into a possible local epidemic based on historical patterns."It’s critical for pregnant women and people who come into close contact with young infants to get vaccinated," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. "Newborns are very susceptible to whooping cough because they are too young to be fully vaccinated. It is vital for pregnant women to be vaccinated in the third trimester to give protection to their unborn infants."So far in 2018, there have been 56 confirmed cases of pertussis.RELATED: This app says it can help you stay flu-freeLast year, San Diego County recorded at least 1,154 cases, the highest of any county in California. Wooten said the high numbers were partially attributed to reporting methods."Pertussis activity in our region appears to higher than the rest of the state, but much of this is due to the excellent detection and reporting of this potentially deadly disease by San Diego pediatricians and family physicians," Wooten said.Pertussis is a cyclical disease that peaks every three to five years, according to health officials. San Diego's last epidemics were in 2010 and 2014, with 1,179 and 2,072, respectively.RELATED: 20 more people died from the flu in San DiegoThe county said on in five of the San Diego County cases in 2017 were in individuals under three years of age, and 52 percent were between the ages of 10 and 17.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend a vaccination schedule to combat whooping cough: 1715

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Conflicting instructions on the California mail-in ballot have confused some voters when it comes to signing their envelope."I laid it all out, and I looked at it and said, 'This doesn't match,'" says San Diego resident Theresa Lally. "It was red flags all over for me."The confusion comes from two separate instructions on how to sign your ballot envelope before submitting it. On the envelope itself, it says your "signature must match your voter registration record." But on the Voter Instruction form that comes with the ballot, it says, "Sign your name just like it appears on your driver's license or identification card."Lally says she can't remember how she signed her voter registration, and she wasn't sure if the instructions meant to include her full name or if she could just use a middle initial.ABC 10News took her concerns to Michael Vu, the San Diego Registrar of Voters. He says voters shouldn't stress over specifics, because the law allows for a fairly liberal interpretation of a signature."You do not have to have an exact match of your signatures," says Vu. "What we're looking for are the unique characteristics of a signature."Because signatures change over time, Vu says the people who verify each signature look at identifying markers to match the signature on the envelope to the signature on file."We look at the way that a person slants their signatures," Vu says. "Or the way that they loop their L's or J's or S's. Or how they may have a tail at the very end of their signature."He also says just initials can be enough to make a comparison and verify a signature. If none of that matches, Vu says the ballot goes into a "curing" process. The Registrar will have the voter fill out an affidavit that the office uses to verify the signature. And if a voter makes a mistake on their signature, Vu says they can contact the Registrar's office for a replacement ballot.Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by November 3 and received within 17 days to count. In-person voting begins October 31 at 235 "Super Polling" locations throughout San Diego County. 2105

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cal Coast Academy, a private school in Carmel Valley, has an "ambitious" plan to bring kids back to campus as soon as San Diego gets approval from state and county administrators."When we put our mind to something, we make it happen," says Jan Dunning, the school's founder and principal.Dunning plans to build six large tents on the school's property, similar to tents used at weddings or other large events. They'll have flooring, electricity and other amenities to make them feel like indoor classrooms."At my school we think on our feet," says Dunning. "We are flexible because we work with students that need flexibility. So that's a real strength of ours."Cal Coast Academy caters to students who need non-traditional learning, like elite athletes who travel extensively, international students, or students with learning disabilities. That's why the school feels they'll be able to make a non-traditional learning environment work this fall.Class sizes in the tents will be limited to six students per teacher, to allow for social distancing. But the project isn't cheap. Dunning says they've already spent nearly ,000 on the tents. Costs like that make it unlikely that public schools with large enrollments would be able to hold classes outdoors in a similar fashion. But Dunning believes it's doable for small groups, like students with special needs who struggle with online learning. 1424

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As cities nationwide remove landmarks named after Confederate or racially-charged figures, an online petition is demanding San Diego do the same at Mount Hope Cemetery.A Change.org petition is asking Mayor Kevin Faulconer to remove a memorial to Confederate soldiers at Mount Hope Cemetery."Why does the City of San Diego expect black citizens, literal descendants of the very people the monument celebrates enslaving, oppressing, and terrorizing, to maintain such a horrific monument?" the petition says. The petition has nearly 900 or 1,000 requested signatures. The monument was erected in 1948 on a plot owned by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, who supporters call such markers, testaments to history. Both Union and Confederate soldiers are buried in the cemetery.10news found the monument stone heavily damaged, with pieces scattered around the monument. Sources tell us the vandalism is a recent and ongoing issue. The monument isn't the only one in San Diego that has been subject to Change.org efforts. In 2017, the city removed a marker from Horton Plaza Park that commemorated the Jefferson Davis Highway, named for the Confederate leader. Fast forward to Wednesday, the city removed another marker from the park, this time commemorating Robert E. Lee Highway."Robert E. Lee Highway marker is gone. Many thanks to city Park & Rec staff and Stockdale Capital Partners for getting this done," Councilmember Mark Kersey tweeted. The difference between Horton Plaza Park and the cemetery plot: the plot is privately owned. In the past, city officials say their hands are tied."We support the removal from a private plot on City land and of a Confederate statue. Such statues are symbols of division that represent a horrendous past and glorify white supremacy. Such statues do not belong in a place of peace; they celebrate instead slavery (1620-1865) and the Jim Crow (1877-1964). The City should not have such symbols of intolerance and hatred on its property," said Francine Maxwell, President of the San Diego branch of the NAACP. 2078

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As rain continues to soak California, the state is almost entirely out of a drought. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor's most recent report out Thursday, the only part of the state still experiencing any form of drought is a portion of extreme Northern California. As seen in the image below, those counties are only in a "moderate drought," the lowest level in the rating system.
