SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's love for giant pandas has been a 30-year commitment.Since 1987, when the zoo hosted two pandas (Basi and Yuan Yuan) for 200 days, San Diego has been enthralled with the giant black-and-white bears. What would eventually follow would be a 12-year partnership with China's Wolong Panda Preserve to support research and conservation of the animal — and a local appetite as big as a panda's to see the animal up close.RELATED: San Diego Zoo to send pandas Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu to ChinaThe zoo's first two pandas, Bai Yun and Shi Shi, arrived in 1996. A new exhibit to showcase the pandas was constructed and their popularity among San Diegans — and visitors from around the world — took off.Bai Yun would go on to mother six more pandas:Hua Mei, the San Diego Zoo's first panda cub, was born in August 1999. She would be given to Wolong Giant Panda Conservation Center in China, per the conservation agreement, in February 2004. Mei Sheng, born in August 2003Su Lin, born in August 2005Zhen Zhen, born in August 2007 (returned to China with Su Lin in August 2010)Yun Zi, born in August 2009 (left to China in January 2014)Xiao Liwu, born in July 2012The zoo also welcomed another panda, Gao Gao, in 2003, who successfully mated with Bai Yun, leading to Mei Sheng's birth. Gao Gao then returned to China in October 2018.Through this partnership, the zoo and Chinese counterparts have led to a wealth of research on panda behavior habit, pregnancy, birth, and maternal and geriatric care.RELATED: In 2016, giant panda taken off endangered species listThe massive effort to conserve the bear came just as the species was on the verge of extinction, making the San Diego Zoo an important part in preventing such an event.“Thanks to the work we’ve done, we have met the initial conservation goals we set more than 25 years ago,” Carmi Penny, director of Collections Husbandry Science at the San Diego Zoo, said after the announcement of pandas returning to China. “Now, we must look to the future with a new set of objectives—and, along with our collaborators in China, we want to build on our current conservation successes while attaining a deeper understanding of the panda.” 2208

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego students have a new way to report claims of physical or sexual abuse in school.Thursday, District Attorney Summer Stephan announced the creation of a new, online reporting system for suspected abuse. She also announced the creation of the Student Safety in School Systems Task Force."It's critically important that these reports don't fall through the cracks," Stephan says. "The safety of our students depends on it."RELATED: La Jolla Bishop's School graduate describes former teacher sexually abusing her, alumni come forwardStephan says many times, students don't feel comfortable going to school administrators or officials with claims of abuse. They fear the claims won't be taken seriously, or the allegations could be covered up. The new online system gives the students a more secure feeling that their claims will be investigated. The task force will vet and review every submission and follow up with the appropriate law enforcement agency. They will also guide the person facing the suspected abuse to find resources and other available services for help. This will not replace the responsibility of mandated reporters within schools, Stephan says. But it will give people another way to make sure the proper authorities hear their claims.RELATED: Former El Cajon high school teacher suspected of 6 sex assaultsAnyone is welcome to file a claim for any kind of physical or sexual abuse. But, Stephan says the main goal is to root out abuse done by teachers or other adults against students.Links to the reporting system will be put on the webpage of every school district in the county, as well as the DA's website. You can file a report here. 1690

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University coronavirus cases alone are not enough to move the region into the more restrictive “purple” tier, the school said in a report Friday. The report comes as San Diego County sees an increase in cases following Labor Day weekend, SDSU said. The more restrictive tier would force more restrictions on businesses already impacted by the virus.RELATED STORIESWhat happens if San Diego County moves to California's most restrictive tierConfusion over San Diego schools' reopening plans if county falls into purple tierAccording to the state, should the region move to the purple tier, places of worship and personal care businesses would be forced outdoors, as would gyms, and businesses such as retail, restaurants, and personal care facilities would be forced to limit capacity further.SDSU said Friday that more than 1,500 students have been tested for COVID-19 since the school mandated testing for students who live on campus.Since August 24, 785 students have tested positive or are presumed positive for the virus. No faculty or staff are positive for the virus, the school said. 1132

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego winemakers say business is picking up, and there's a new way to for locals to get their foot in the door. A new report by the San Diego County Vintners Association says there are now 116 wineries in the region, with sales nearly doubling in the last year. The industry now has about 700 workers in the county. Now, the association has teamed up with Cuyamaca College for a Viticulture Technician Apprenticeship program. Participants work 1,500 hours a year, learning the ins and outs of winemaking. They earn an hour the first year and the second, with opportunities to make more doing side jobs once they get enough experience. "You can't really sell wine unless you know where it's coming from and what goes into it, creating the story behind the wine itself," said Kaylan Wedemeyer, who is an apprentice for La Mesa's San Pasqual Winery.Linda McWilliams, who owns San Pasqual, said many local wineries are mom and pops, but that apprentices can also grow with them."I think we'll find places for the people who graduate, and then we'll build together," she said. The program is accepting applications ahead of interviews in December, and January starts.  1227
