On Monday, Johns Hopkins University reported that the U.S. had recorded its 6 millionth confirmed case of COVID-19 — another grim milestone in a pandemic that continues to ravage the country like no other nation across the planet.Though the daily number of new cases has fallen in recent days, the U.S. still has more than 2 million more confirmed cases than any other country. The U.S. also has the most COVID-19 deaths with more than 180,000.Despite falling case numbers, the U.S. is still reporting more than 40,000 new cases of COVID-19 each day — which currently ranks as the second-highest in the world, behind India. For the past month, deaths per day linked to COVID-19 have held fairly consistent, peaking at 1,000 per day while falling to a few hundred on weekends. The U.S. currently ranks fourth among all countries with about 56 COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 people.According to a model produced by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington — a model often cited by the White House — a projected 300,000 Americans will die of COVID-19 by December if current policies remain in place. 1139
Ohio State University placed its head football coach, Urban Meyer, on paid administrative leave on Wednesday as it investigates whether he was aware of domestic violence allegations against fired assistant coach Zach Smith."The university is conducting an investigation into these allegations," Ohio State said. Ryan Day, who has been the team's offensive coordinator, will be acting head football coach while Meyer is on leave."We are focused on supporting our players and on getting to the truth as expeditiously as possible," the university said.Meyer said in a statement that he and Gene Smith, Ohio State's athletic director, "agree that being on leave during this inquiry will facilitate its completion. This allows the team to conduct training camp with minimal distraction. I eagerly look forward to the resolution of this matter."At issue is whether Meyer knew about domestic violence allegations against Zach Smith made by his ex-wife, Courtney Smith. Zach Smith was the team's wide receivers' coach. 1018

OCEAN BEACH (KGTV)- Big waves continue to pound the coast today. A High Surf Advisory is issued until Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Waves reached heights up to eight feet Thursday and along Ocean Beach Pier, some waves reached 10 feet. As we normally see during high surf, advanced surfers made their way to the beaches. In Ocean Beach, crews continued their work to repair the pier despite the high surf below. Waves up to 10 feet crashed into the pier. One Ocean Beach resident tells 10News, "you know we spend all this money to live here and this is one of our facilities, it's sad when its closed". Crews are still on track to reopen the pier by Memorial Day, according to the City of San Diego. 709
On Friday, roughly 900 million miles away, a collection of metal and electronics will crash into Saturn, disintegrating into its atmosphere. It sounds almost routine -- or at least a mere blip on the radar of importance for people grappling with hurricanes, war and political discord. But it's not routine. At least not for the more than 5,000 people who, at one time or another, worked on the Cassini spacecraft mission. For them, it's a thrilling -- and perhaps traumatic -- end to a decades-long journey."I'm now carrying around an end-of-mission handkerchief to every interview," said Trina Ray, Cassini's Science Planning and Sequencing Team deputy. She joined the mission just before its launch in 1997. "It's part of being a part of an incredible thing, and of course, everybody is so proud of the team, of the spacecraft. There's a lot of pride in what we've done." 880
