Just days ahead of the presidential election, the U.S. set a new daily record for new COVID-19 infections with 99,000 on Friday, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University.The staggering number of infections broke the previous record of more than 88,000, which had been set on Thursday. However, the importance of COVID-19 seems to break down among party lines — 82% of Democrats consider the pandemic to be an important issue, while just 24% of Republicans believe it to be important.Despite rising case numbers and hospitalization rates, President Donald Trump has insisted that the U.S. is "rounding the corner" on the pandemic and has touted his administration's work in the pre-production of the vaccine. He's also hinted that he intends to fire Dr. Anthony Fauci — his administration's top infectious disease expert and one of the most respected members of the White House coronavirus task force.Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has repeated that he will let science drive his decisions when it comes to the pandemic and has said he supports a mask mandate on federal property.Fauci and other top health officials believe the U.S. is in a perilous position as cases spike ahead of winter months. (KGTV) - The Valley Fire claimed the home of a 78-year-old Jamul woman Saturday, along with many of her beloved animals.Cellphone video shot by Pat Menzies shows a thick wall of smoke over a ridge, as he drove his mother Eileen from her home, and away from the fast-moving flames of the Valley Fire on Saturday. Around 2 pm, Eileen says she had only minutes to pack a few things, grab her three dogs and get out of her home on Prairie Drive."We were afraid it was going to come fast, especially since there were no planes, helicopters and fire engines there," said Eileen.Eileen says brushfires have gotten within a half-mile of her home in the past, but this felt different."i just had a gut feeling this one was going to take me out," said Eileen.The fear turned into reality, as Eileen and her daughter discovered when they got back on the property the next day. Eileen's trailer home of 17 years was burned to the ground. All her family heirlooms and almost all her possessions were gone."I felt numb because there was nothing I could do. It's going to be tough to get back online," said Eileen.On the day she learned what happened to her home, the toughest part was her search for her animals, in various pens and cages. Her goat, duck, turkey and three of 12 peacocks, were all found dead."It was sad because they were trapped. The turkey, duck and goats were my babies, and they're not with me anymore," said Eileen.That sadness hanging over Eileen as she begins her road to recovery. Jordana Judson lives in New York. But when she heard about the Florida school shooting last week, it hit close to home.Judson, 23, graduated from Florida State University, which had a school shooting a few years ago. She also is a 2012 graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, where 17 students and faculty were killed last Wednesday.Her family friend Meadow Pollack was among them. After she heard the news, all Judson wanted to do was go home to South Florida and be with her family."Everyone (in the community) knows somebody involved somehow," she said. Pollack, 18, was the sister of Judson's brother's best friend, and Pollack's dad has been a father figure to Judson's family. "Meadow's dad helped raise my brother."Judson didn't find out until last Thursday, the day after the shooting, that Pollack was killed. Job searching amid the COVID-19 pandemic has proved tough for many. Businesses are either halting hiring or laying off employees. Some job-seekers, though, are finding a number of openings that essentially didn't exist before the pandemic."The pandemic's created a paramount shift in how companies are approaching safety for their employees and for their customers and so that’s led to a number of jobs that you didn’t really see much of before," says Patrick Beharelle, the CEO of recruiting company TrueBlue. He says a number of never-before-seen job openings are entering the market, including temperature checkers, disinfecting cleaning services and many more."Reconfiguration specialists. These are folks that are restructuring facilities for more social distancing, so wider aisles, as an example. Decontamination technicians. These are folks that are cleaning masks and PPE for healthcare workers and so these are positions you just didn’t see a lot of before," says Beharelle.Some of the positions, such as temperature checkers, are likely part-time or temporary."And then there's positions like contact tracers. Really, those didn't exist at all before and these are positions where folks work out of their homes and essentially are call center-type employees. They make anywhere from to an hour doing contact tracing," says Beharelle.At-home tech support is an in-demand field right now with openings.“There are virtual event planners, or people who help organizers change events that were supposed to be done in person into online virtual events," says Julia Pollak, with Zip Recruiter.
