SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The man accused of killing a Church’s Chicken employee in Otay Mesa West waived extradition in Tennessee Monday. Investigators and U.S. Marshals tracked down Albert Lee Blake in Memphis last week.Blake was wanted for the murder of Maribel Ibanez and shooting of two other employees at the South San Diego County restaurant earlier this month.According to the Shelby County District Attorney’s office, Blake’s fugitive from justice without a warrant case was dismissed by the judge, which means San Diego authorities will head to Tennessee and pick him up and bring him back to answer to charges in San Diego.RELATED: Suspect in Church's Chicken shooting arrested in MemphisIn addition the murder charge, Blake is also facing two counts of attempted murder, accused of willfully and deliberately shooting Mario Rojas and Humberto Gerardo Cota.According to court documents, Blake has a lengthy criminal history dating back to the 1990s.In 2016, he was charged with counts of manufacturing a controlled substance, possession of marijuana for sale, possession of firearm by a felon and more. He also violated probation earlier this year. Blake also served time for counts of felony domestic violence in 2002 and burglary in 1990, and had DUI charges on his criminal record.TIMELINE: Events that led to Church's Chicken shootingBlake faces 25 years to life for the latest charges.Lt. Matthew Dobbs with SDPD’s Homicide Unit says Blake will be back in San Diego this week where he will be booked in the San Diego County Jail.He will then be assigned a court date to appear on the warrant.Ibanez's sister Gabriela Merino told 10News she is glad he was caught, but nothing eases the pain of losing her sister."Nothing's going to bring her back," said Merino. "She was a good woman."She said the only question she has for the man accused of killing her sister, " I just want to say to him… why he did that to my sister." 1938

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surgeons at UC San Diego are using new technology that offers more options for patients who have complex thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. UC San Diego Health System is the first on the West Coast to use Dynamic Morphology Correction, a type of 3D imaging. It allows surgeons to compare scans taken before the procedure to real-time pictures during the surgery.Dr. Mahmoud Malas, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at UC San Diego, says this type of technology uses minimal iodine contrast which lessens the chance of kidney problems for 25 percent of patients dealing with aneurysms. The data from this technology helps surgeons across the country.Dr. Malas adds, " They create prediction models that helps future surgeons perform procedures more accurately." 795

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The City of San Diego approved a -million contract for a feasibility study and designs for a multi-purpose training facility for first responders. The contract was approved Wednesday by the Active Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Councilman Chris Cate said he is very excited about the opportunity, "the goal in this endeavor is to have a central location for both our firefighters and our police officers to have a viable long term solution for their training facility."Currently San Diego Police and Fire train at a facility just north of Terminal 2, at Lindbergh Field.Along with asbestos problems, the entire facility will come down to make way for the Pure Water San Diego Project, that will turn wastewater into drinking water."We have to be in construction before that because all of those guys have to be out of there," Cate said the deadline is 2027. He hopes by that time a permanent facility will be open for the first responders. Some of the items on the wish list, "classrooms, virtual simulations and testing/tactical obstacle courses, life-size training buildings, home simulations simulating burn scenarios, and many other necessary components required for a safe city."Cate said another important part of the process is weighing the opinions of neighbors, both in households, and businesses. One woman who works nearby said she's worried how much traffic a facility like that could bring.Cate is most concerned about police, fire and SWAT personnel, "it's incumbent upon us as policy makers to make sure that they have all the tools that they need to do their jobs very well for the public."The study is set to be completed by Summer 2020. The staff report shows the anticipated schedule for CCBG, an Arizona-based company, as "completion of design by 2021, and construction completion by 2027." 1851

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The family of Rebecca Zahau said they are filing a new lawsuit against the San Diego County Sheriff's Office for refusing to provide access to records regarding the sheriff's investigation into her death. The family is also petitioning on the San Diego County Medical Examiner - both current and former - to change her cause of death to homicide or undetermined from suicide. On July 13, 2011, Rebecca Zahau’s nude body was reportedly found hanging from a balcony at the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado. Investigators said her hands and feet were bound with red rope. The same red rope was discovered hanging over the balcony.Authorities said Adam Shacknai called 911 to report her death. Shacknai was staying at the mansion that was owned then by his brother Jonah Shacknai, Zahau's boyfriend.Zahau, 32, had been babysitting her boyfriend’s 6-year-old son Max when he suffered serious injuries in a fall down a staircase at the home. The boy died from his injuries five days later. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Zahau’s death a suicide. Authorities have suggested she took her own life out of remorse and sorrow over the boy’s injuries. The Zahau family rejected the suicide conclusion, and for many years, they have believed she was murdered by Adam Shacknai. Shacknai failed a polygraph exam in 2011.The family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against him in 2013.In April 2018, jurors found Adam Shacknai liable for Zahau's death, and he was ordered to pay million to Zahau’s family despite her death being ruled a suicide.Eight months later, the sheriff’s department announced that they would not reopen the Zahau death case following a review saying they found no evidence she "died at the hands of another."In a statement, the sheriff's department says they do not comment on pending litigation, calling the Zahau investigation "objective and thorough."RELATED:-- Settlement reached in civil case; Shacknai speaks to 10News-- Coronado mansion death case won't be reopened-- Jury finds Adam Shacknai responsible in Zahau wrongful death case-- PHOTOS: Zahau death investigation-- TIMELINE: The Rebecca Zahau case 2188

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of the man killed on India Street on this month has identified him as David Hill. The 38-year-old was a pathology resident at Balboa Naval Hospital. In the Navy since 2004, Hill had reached the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was an avid traveler, having visited dozens of countries. His mother, Carol Hill, said he had a goal of running a marathon on every continent. Hill had already checked off the hardest, Antarctica, though he had to get creative. “He did the 26 miles on the ship’s treadmill to fill that square!” said Hill's mother. RELATED: Pedestrian hit, killed near I-5 offrampA member of the San Diego Swim Masters team, he also swam in the Antarctic waters and was training for an island-to-island swim in the Galapagos next year. “He was a fanatic about being in shape,” said his brother, Matt. “Every morning he’d get up at 4 am and swim miles or he’d get up and run.” That’s what they believe he was doing the morning of Dec. 2. He had made it a few blocks from his apartment when he was struck by the driver of a minivan on India Street near Olive and Palm. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The 55-year-old driver of the minivan stopped and has cooperated with investigators. 1244
