LONDON, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's mining giant Aluminium Corporation of China (Chinalco) announced here on Thursday it will inject 19.5 billion U.S. dollars in cash into Rio Tinto.     The cash injection is regarded as "firepower" for Rio Tinto, against the global economic downturn, Tom Albanese, chief executive of Rio Tinto, said. Xiao Yaqing, president of Chinalco, said following the signing of an agreement on investment that the investment is a show of confidence in both China and the world, adding that "the strategic partnership with Rio Tinto will prove to be valuable and successful." Chinalco announced Thursday it would invest 19.5 billion U.S. dollars in mining giant Rio Tinto Group, bailing out the latter while securing for the state-owned Chinese company access to more resources    As the leading Chinese diversified resources company, Chinalco's investment puts more emphasis on potential future values than on short-term returns, Xiao said.     The transaction will forge a pioneering strategic partnership through the creation of joint ventures in aluminium, copper, and iron ore as well as the issue of convertible bonds to Chinalco, which would, if converted, allow Chinalco to increase its existing shareholding in Rio Tinto to about 18 percent.     The transaction is still to be approved by shareholders of Rio Tinto, governments and other regulators.     Albanese said the transaction will position Rio Tinto to lead the resources industry into the next decade and beyond by ensuring the continuity of its strategy.     The new partnership with the Chinese company "will benefit from Chinalco's strong relationships within China, which Rio Tinto believes will continue to be the main driver of growth in commodity markets over the longer term," Albanese said.     He said the Chinalco relationship will also help Rio Tinto to seek project funding from Chinese financial institutions.

BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- China's cement production expanded 10.3 percent year on year to 159 million tonnes in the first two months, amid the booming fixed-asset investment, data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) have shown.     The growth rate was 6.8 percentage points higher than that for December, as the fixed-asset investment accelerated due to the government's 4 trillion yuan (584.8 billion U.S. dollars) stimulus package, according to the MIIT data released on Friday.     The wholesale price was 284 yuan per ton, 5 yuan cheaper than the price peak in November, but 27.8 yuan higher than that for January.     China's urban fixed asset investment rose 26.5 percent year on year to 1.027 trillion yuan (150.35 billion U.S. dollars) in the first two months, as the government's stimulus plan propped up construction of housing and railways.     MIIT figures showed that the output value of the building material sector rose 14 percent year on year in the January-February period, two percentage points higher than that for December.     The figures were calculated based on the comparable working days in the first two months, since China's Lunar New Year holiday fell in February last year, but in January this year.     Zhu Hongren, official with the MIIT said the building material sector was back on track after the stimulus plan showed effect. However, the excess production was still prominent, and efforts must be made to eliminate outdated capacity.

BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday met with Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Michael Thomas Somare.In their meeting at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing, Hu said bilateral relations have made significant progress since both countries forged diplomatic ties in 1976, citing frequent high-level visits, deep political trust and fruitful cooperation in all fields.     Hu appreciated Papua New Guinea's unswerving adherence to the one-China policy and support on China's peaceful reunification. BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has called for strengthened coordination among different nations on economic polices and joint efforts against trade and investment protectionism to help the world economy recover.     The international community as a whole was severely challenged in the course of tackling the global financial crisis and resuming growth in the world economy, Hu told Xinhua on Tuesday ahead of the G20 summit scheduled to open in London on Thursday.     With the impact of the global financial crisis on the real economy unfolding and deepening, priorities should be taken by various countries to adopt economic stimulus measures in line with their own situations and work hand in hand to promote growth and employment and improve the people's lives, according to Hu.     Efforts should also be made as soon as possible to stabilize the global financial market and earnestly give play to the role of finance in spurring the real economy to restore confidence of the people and enterprises, Hu said.     "The international financial system should undergo necessary reforms in an all-round, balanced, gradual and effective manner to prevent a similar crisis in the future," the president noted.     China as a responsible country would work with all the other parties attending the summit to help it yield "positive" and "practical" results, Hu said.     China pledged to give its own contribution to the recovery of world economy. The country would adhere to its fundamental national policy of opening up to the outside world and mutually beneficial and win-win strategies, Hu said.     A vigorous and more open China would not only benefit its own steady, fast growth, but help the international community fight the financial crisis and contribute to the world's peace and development, Hu said.     The country has set an 8 percent target for economic growth this year, still notably higher than the 1 percent world average estimated by the World Bank. China grew 9 percent in 2008, the slowest pace in seven years.     The global financial crisis and economic slowdown have created many difficulties for China, Hu said, citing the slump of exports and imports, slower industrial production and unemployment.     But a basket of governmental measures to stimulate domestic demand and promote economic growth have begun to take effect, he added.     Beginning in late 2008, the Chinese government has issued a comprehensive economic stimulus package including a 4 trillion yuan (585 billion U.S. dollars) investment plan and support plans for ten key industries.     The country's central bank has cut interest rates five times and lowered deposit reserve ratio four times in an effort to enhance capital fluidity.     "We have confidence, conditions and capabilities to keep a steady and rapid growth," Hu Jintao said.

HONG KONG, April 12 (Xinhua) -- About 400 enterprises in the Chinese mainland had been selected to participate in the Renminbi cross-border trade settlement pilot program, Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of Hong Kong Julia Leung said here Saturday.     Speaking on a radio talk show here Saturday, Leung said enterprises in Hong Kong would soon be able to settle trades in Renminbi through the banks with the selected companies in the Chinese mainland.     Noting the program can reduce the risks and cost arising from fluctuations in exchange rates, she said Hong Kong banks could expand extensively their Renminbi services from individual clients to enterprises.     When asked whether the scheme includes trade financing, Leung said authorities in the Chinese mainland would announce the details soon.     "The Monetary Authority has made full preparation for the program including conducting tests on the Renminbi clearing system," Leung noted, adding that "the system can start operation once the Chinese mainland comes up with the operational details."     When asked whether the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government would change Hong Kong's linked exchange rate with the U.S. dollar, the under secretary said the system had been working effectively and the HKSAR government had no plan to change it.
