IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV)— South Bay beaches are closed again, after millions of gallons of contaminated sewage water spilled from Tijuana, BC into Imperial Beach communities. It may look beautiful from afar, but up close, Giovanny Ceja says the waves were a little off Thursday afternoon. “We usually go to other beaches, and they look really clear, but that one was dirty and brown,” Ceja said.  Ceja and his little sister spent the day at Imperial Beach, near the south end of Seacoast Drive, boogie boarding and building sand castles. To get there, he walked right past many warning signs. Large yellow signs read: “KEEP OUT. SEWAGE CONTAMINATED WATER.”“It’s a completely unacceptable,” Imperial Beach City Councilwoman Paloma Aguirre says.According to the International Boundary Water Commission, a Tijuana water collector ruptured Wednesday night. That spilled 3.5 million gallons of sewage water into the Tijuana River, which gushed into South Imperial Beach. “It’s incredibly frustrating because this is the summer. This is our time to have open beaches in Imperial Beach,” Aguirre said. “It’s because of the incredible negligence that the state of Baja California authorities have shown and the lack of accountability and leadership from our federal agencies.”So far this year, there have been 50 beach closure days in Imperial Beach. Aguirre says as polluted water gushes into IB, quality of life gushes out. “At the end of the day Imperial Beach is at the end of the pipe,” Aguirre said. “We are the ones that are paying with economic losses, with illnesses to our kids, to our families, and to our environment.”As for little Giovanny, who did not notice the warning signs, now he is getting worried. “When I was boogie boarding the water wet in my mouth,” Ceja said. “I’ll shower. Maybe twice.”THe closure only affects beaches south of Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach to the US-Mexico border. The IB Pier remains open. 1949

In an emotional gathering just one week after a gunman mowed down 14 students and three teachers at Stoneman Douglas High School, thousands of community members and students met with politicians and others for a town hall on how to make schools safer. The town hall on Wednesday night followed days of sit-ins, walkouts and demonstrations in solidarity with survivors of the massacre."Tonight people who have different points of view are going to talk about an issue that I think that we all believe and that this should never have happened and it can never happen again," Sen. Marco Rubio, a Republican, told the crowd.  633

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - An altercation over a mask turned ugly at an Imperial Beach taco shop on Thursday night.Just before 10 p.m. at Don Pancho's Taco Shop, surveillance video shows a customer at the walk-up order window. He's using his shirt and sleeve to cover his face."Our cashier says he has to wear a proper face mask. The customer gets upset. The cashier offers a face mask that we have on hand for those who don't have masks. He thinks about it and gets upset," said manager Myra Espinoza. In the video, the man waves his hand, apparently waving off the mask offer, before he begins walking away. Moments later, there is a loud sound."He heard something hit the window, and the window falling and shattering down," said Espinoza. The video revealed the cause: the man took his skateboard and thrust into one of the restaurant's windows."It hurts. That's like my house. It's so disrespectful. I wouldn't go to his house and break his window," said Espinoza.Espinoza says it's not the first time someone has gotten upset over the mask policy."We have sliding windows. One gentleman grabbed the sliding windows so hard, it bounced back," said Espinoza.Still, those types of incidents are rare. Thursday's vandalism is the first time things have turned destructive."It's uncalled for and unnecessary. We're all trying to what's best and keep people safe," said Espinoza. The vandalism totaled about 0 dollars in damage. Anyone with information is asked to call the Imperial Beach Sheriff's Station at 619-498-2400. 1536

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the COVID-19 death of a beloved Imperial Beach grandmother."I have no words. So hard," said a tearful Angelica Madrigal, the daughter of Juana Barajas.Barajas, 61, first became sick last week. By the next day, a fever had arrived."Chest congested and shortness of breath," said Madrigal. "She called me and said, 'I can’t breathe well.'"An ambulance rushed Barajas to the hospital. She tested positive for COVID-19 and that night, she was placed on a ventilator.Barajas, who lived with diabetes and a heart condition, suffered four heart attacks in the ICU. On Saturday, just five days after she first became ill, Barajas, a mother of three and grandmother of three, passed away."I couldn’t touch her. I couldn’t say goodbye. Had to see her through a window," said Madrigal.Madrigal says her mother was hard-working, humble, and loved to joke around."Since I was kids, she always had two or three jobs," said Madrigal. "She was my best friend. She was everything to me."Madrigal isn’t sure how her mom contracted the virus, but says her health issues meant she did have many doctor's appointments.Madrigal says her mother otherwise stuck close to home and wore a mask.In the days after her mother's death, she and several other members of her family have come down with symptoms, including a fever and a cough. They spent Friday morning waiting in line to receive a COVID-19 test."This is serious, this is not a joke. People need to take this seriously. If it happened to me, it can happen to you," said Madrigal.A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1646

House Speaker Paul Ryan called allegations leveled against Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore about pursuing relationships with teenage girls and committing sexual assault "credible" and that he should step aside."He should step aside," Ryan told CNN Tuesday morning. "Number one, these allegations are credible. Number two, if he cares about the values that he claims to care about, then he should step aside."Ryan becomes the latest high-profile Republican voice to call on Moore to step aside, following more than two dozen Republican senators, including some of whom have suggested voting to expel Moore from the Senate should he win the December 12 special election. The flood of condemnation and calls to step down replaced what had been days of heavily caveated statements defined by senators calling for Moore to step aside "if" the allegations "were true." Starting Monday with Ryan's counterpart, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the tone from national Republicans shifted dramatically. An Alabama woman alleged Monday that Moore sexually assaulted her when she was a teenager. Moore called the accusation "absolutely false" in a statement in Gallant, Alabama, later Monday, denying that he knew the woman. The accusations came after The Washington Post published a report last week based on interviews with more than 30 people, saying Moore pursued relationships with teenagers while he was in his 30s. One woman said she was 14 years old when Moore initiated sexual contact with her. Moore also denied those allegations and has threatened to sue the Post. For now, GOP leaders are stuck in an increasingly difficult position. Moore has repeatedly said he has no intention of stepping down and views the stories themselves -- and the GOP senators that have condemned him in its wake -- are nothing but political attacks. Senate Republicans made clear they are weighing several options on how to go forward, ranging from pushing for a write-in campaign to trying to vote Moore out of the Senate should he win.One Republican senator, Jeff Flake, the Arizonan who announced last month he would retire at the end of his term, became the first to present another choice Monday night: support Moore's opponent."If the choice is between Roy Moore and a Democrat, a Democrat no doubt," Flake told reporters.  2338
