ASTANA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Friday evening for a two-day state visit to Kazakhstan.Hu said in a statement released upon arrival at the airport that, with the effort of both sides, his visit would be a total success and help advance the strategic partnership between China and Kazakhstan to a new stage.During the visit, Hu will hold talks with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev and meet with parliament and government leaders.The two sides will outline the future development of bilateral links. They will decide on the key tasks and areas of bilateral cooperation in the next stage and exchange views on major international and regional issues of common concern. Bilateral cooperation in the areas of politics, economy, trade, energy, security and culture had been fruitful.Hu said the two countries stood firm in reciprocal support on major and sensitive issues of each other's concern, adding the two sides had cooperated closely within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia.Hu said the cooperation had brought about substantial benefits to the people of both countries and played a positive role in promoting regional peace, stability and development.Hu was greeted at the airport by Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Masimov and other government officials.Before arriving in Astana, Hu paid a state visit to Uzbekistan and attended an annual SCO summit in Tashkent.Kazakhstan is the final leg of Hu's two-nation Central Asia trip. He returns home Saturday.
ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A new round of rains started to pound the mudslide-flattened Chinese town of Zhouqu Monday night, which has increased the possibilities of new mudslides occurring.The weather bureau in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Gansu Province, which administers Zhouqu County, issued a rainstorm warning Monday night, warning about the likelihood of new geological disasters.Rains started pounding Zhouqu at around 10 p.m., which, according to Gansu's provincial weather bureau, could last for five days and precipitation in some regions may reach 60 to 80 mm.The massive landslide on August 8 killed 1,254 people as of 4 p.m.Monday, with 490 still missing.Residents are ferried by a boat in landslide-hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Gansu Province, Aug. 16, 2010. Large-scaled ponding area still remained in the county although the flood has subsidised. Meanwhile, rescue headquarters in Zhouqu has started implementing a disaster prevention contingency plan, which was drawn up on August 11.The plan asks rescue teams and residents alike to move out of mudslide-prone areas if heavy rainfalls pelt the region.According to the plan, tents built in these areas should be removed immediately. Also, cars are not allowed to park in these areas.

BEIJING, Aug 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and other state leaders have made donations to help the relief and reconstruction work in Zhouqu County, which was devastated by a massive mudslide .Former President Jiang Zemin donated as well.Other state leaders who donated include Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang, all Standing Committee members of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.So far, over 200 million yuan (29 million U.S. dollars) have been raised among Party members and staff of the central state organs.The death toll from the mudslide that hit the county in northwest China's Gansu Province had risen to 1,407 as of 4 p.m. Friday, with 358 still missing.

ZHAOYUAN, Shandong, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Fourteen miners were confirmed dead, 23 others still trapped underground while 292 were lift to the ground safely following a fire that engulfed a gold mine in east China's Shandong Province Friday, local authorities said early Saturday morning.A total of 329 miners were working underground when the fire broke out at about 5 p.m. at the Luoshan Gold Mine run by Lingnan Mining Co. Ltd. in Zhaoyuan city, a spokesman with the rescue headquarters told Xinhua.Three hundred and six were lifted to the ground as of 5 a.m., but 14 of them were found dead, he said.Twenty-three people were still trapped underground, with 21 miners' locations identified, he added.Dozens of injured miners had been sent to two local hospitals, he said.An initial investigation showed that the fire was likely caused by an underground cable. Police were further investigating the incident.The mine owner had been taken into police custody, he said.Over 100 rescuers are working at the scene. Provincial Party chief Jiang Yikang and governor Jiang Daming have rushed to the scene to oversee the rescue work.
