SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 400,000 people in San Diego County have already cast their ballot for the November election."We are unprecedented, unchartered, in so many different ways in historic numbers of mail-in ballots that are coming back to our office," said Michael Vu with the San Diego Registrar of Voters. Saturday, Vu said the registrar had received 432,000 ballots have been cast. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More and more local high school students are slashing college tuition costs, free of charge.From the cheer squad to the lacrosse team, junior Katie Quis' schedule at Rancho Bernardo High is packed. That's not counting her Tuesdays and Thursday, when she heads to Miramar College for a calculus class.The class is her third at Miramar College since last summer; part of the dual enrollment program which offers college-credit classes to high school students at no cost. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Parts of Balboa Park reopened Friday after the COVID-19 pandemic forced closures in March.Park officials said the following areas would reopen: Central Mesa (El Prado, Plaza de Panama, Cabrillo Bridge, Pan American Plaza), all parking lots, Prado Restaurant, Tea Pavilion, and Visitors Center.Tim Lu and his daughter Matilda have been looking forward to a bike ride at the park for a long time.They live nearby and drove by regularly ever since the park closed. Week after week, all they saw were empty streets and sidewalks.When they got the news that parts of Balboa Park were going to reopen, Lu wanted to make sure they were there for the first day. And he wasn’t alone, as others showed up equally as happy to see the park reopen.Sarah Beckman, director of the Balboa Park Conservancy, said, “This is part of people’s daily routines. This is a neighborhood park. It’s also a global destination but our friends have been missing this for a long time now.”While at the park or the trails, San Diego County and city health orders are still in effect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than 50 free health classes could come to community centers and libraries across San Diego. It would be part of a sponsorship deal the city is considering with Sharp HealthCare, in which Sharp would pay the city 0,000 a year for the right to market as the city's "Health and Wellness Partner."Sharp currently offers classes, many of them free, but most are at Sharp facilities.This arrangement, going before a city committee Wednesday, and ultimately before the City Council, would call for six free classes a year in each of the nine council districts, from Otay Mesa to Rancho Bernardo. Dr. Eunice Sanchez-Mata, of Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, said patients usually see her once or twice a year."We're here educating them as best as we can, but really that education should be year long," she said. The classes would impart key information on ways to prevent heart disease, quit smoking, live with diabetes, and manage stress.
