WILMINGTON, Del. – In a prime-time speech after the Electoral College vote, President-elect Joe Biden is set to declare that “not even ... an abuse of power” can stop a peaceful transition of power in the U.S. after last month’s election. That’s an overt swipe at President Donald Trump’s refusal to accept defeat and the top Republicans who have continued to stand by him.Biden is set to speak in Wilmington at about 7:30 p.m. ET Monday after the Electoral College formally votes to declare him president.According to excerpts released ahead of time by his campaign, Biden plans to call for unity and again express his intentions to be a president for everyone, regardless of whether they voted for him.“As I said through this campaign, I will be a president for all Americans,” Biden will say. “I will work just as hard for those of you who didn’t vote for me, as I will for those who did.But he also will say that “In America, politicians don’t take power — the people grant it to them.”“The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago,” Biden is set to say. “And we now know that nothing — not even a pandemic —or an abuse of power — can extinguish that flame.”As electors gathered in all 50 states and the District of Columbia on Monday to formally vote for the next president, the U.S. reached two major milestones in the COVID-19 pandemic. The nation’s death toll from the coronavirus surpassed 300,000 people and the first doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine were administered to health care workers in several states.During his remarks, Biden is also expected to touch on the state of the pandemic and what he’ll do to help get the country through it.“There is urgent work in front of all of us. Getting the pandemic under control to getting the nation vaccinated against this virus. Delivering immediate economic help so badly needed by so many Americans who are hurting today — and then building our economy back better than ever,” Biden is set to say. 1983

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office is conducting a death investigation after an Uber driver shot and killed a man early Tuesday morning.During a news conference, Sheriff Grady Judd said that a bartender and patron at the Grove Lounge on US Hwy 27 in Dundee called for an Uber when they realized a young woman was in no condition to drive. As they waited for the Uber to arrive, the patron, Jessica, and her boyfriend, 34-year-old Jason Boek, were texting back and forth about him picking her up from the bar. When he refused, Jessica told him that she had found a ride and didn't need him to pick her up; in which he later replied after arguing with her:"I'm going to f***ing beat the f*** out of the Uber driver"Once the Uber driver, 38-year-old Robert Westlake, arrived at the bar Jessica put the intoxicated young woman in the car. Boek began following the Hyundai Elantra .thinking Jessica was inside. As the two continued on Dundee Road, Boek approached Westlake's Hyundai from behind and then abruptly passed and pulled in front of it.After jumping out of his F-250 pickup truck and approaching Westlake he yelled:"You know I have a pistol? Want me to shoot you?"Westlake, who is a concealed weapon permit holder and just finished police academy, reached into the pocket of the driver door, retrieved a handgun and shot Boek once in the chest. He then called 911 and spoke in "police lingo" and told them he had shot a man after he had threatened him. He also began lifesaving measures.Dashcam video shows moments leading up to shooting 1642

WILMINGTON, Del. – Sen. Kamala Harris of California will be Joe Biden’s running mate in the 2020 presidential election. The presumptive Democratic nominee announced Tuesday that Harris will join him on the ticket. If she and Biden win in November, she would become the first woman and African-American elected as vice president.Biden’s selection comes after weeks of vetting several candidates for the role, all of which were women because the former vice president vowed to run alongside a female prospect. The Biden campaign said Harris and Biden will deliver remarks from Delaware on Wednesday.Tweeting from her official account, Harris said, "Joe Biden can unify the American people because he's spent his life fighting for us. And as president, he'll build an America that lives up to our ideals. I'm honored to join him as our party's nominee for Vice President, and do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief."Harris is a U.S. senator and African American leader from California. She also made a name for herself as a presidential candidate, running against Biden himself during this election. Some Biden advisers don't like how she attacked Biden during the campaign, not to mention her time as a prosecutor could hurt her with some voters.Biden officially clinched the party’s nomination in June, when he reached the 1,991 pledged delegates needed.Biden is expected to accept the nomination during the Democratic National Convention, which will be held virtually next week due to COVID-19 concerns. It was originally set to be held in Milwaukee. Harris will also speak during the event, along with other top Democrats. This story is breaking and will be updated. 1685

When Dan Margenau bought his new house, he found squatters making a big mess.“Footprints all over; carpet is dirty,” the new homeowner said. “They’re troublesome little creatures.”That’s right, creatures -- a family of racoons living rent free in his attic.“It’s frustrating to deal with,” Margenau said.Frustrating, costly and potentially dangerous. That’s when Margenau called Whitmore Pest and Wildlife Control.Worker Jonathan Mulder says his company has received a massive spike in calls lately. He believes the increase is linked to more people staying home due to the coronavirus pandemic.“Unfortunately, COVID happened at a time when we were already knowing that we were going to get a higher call volume,” Mulder said.Across the country, more people are seeing an increase in pest problems. In New York City, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning about aggressive rats starving for food scraps as restaurants shutdown during the pandemic.Down south in Hoover, Alabama, veterinarians have seen an uptick in snakes biting dogs.“Pets have kind of been couch potatoes for a long time," said Dr. Jessica Caver, medical director for Steel City Emergency Vets. She says over the past two months, her staff has seen a 40% increase of dogs bitten by snakes compared to last year.“The biggest thing that I can attribute that to right now is that a lot of people are out you know get some break from the quarantine from COVID-19,” Caver said.Back at Margenau’s house, Mulder is working to evict the unwanted visitors. He understands that there’s an unemployment problem during the pandemic, but says if you’re dealing with a pest problem, it’s best to get it taken care of immediately. If not, it could end up costing you a lot more in the long run. 1776
