SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This year Comic-Con celebrates its 50th anniversary. Only five people have attended the convention every single year. One of them is noted author and television writer Mark Evanier.Evanier began writing comic books when he was a teenager in the 1960's, including the comics featuring characters like Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny. His mentor was comic book legend Jack Kirby, who created or co-created many of the genre's most famous characters, such as Captain America, the X-Men, and the Incredible Hulk. It was Kirby who first told Evanier that a group of fans in San Diego were planning a comic convention at the El Cortez Hotel."I thought it was a great idea," Evanier told 10News in an interview from his office in Los Angeles. "I had no idea it would get as large as it did. I thought maybe we'll have 400, 500 people there."While Evanier thought it would be a niche convention, even in its early days Kirby saw the potential. "He said this a long time ago when this was a nutty idea to say. He said Comic-Con is going to take over the city of San Diego each year," Evanier recalled.Early supporters of the convention included Marvel creator Stan Lee and science fiction author Ray Bradbury. Comic-Con moved into the San Diego Convention Center in 1991, soon expanding to take over the ballrooms at the surrounding hotels.Evanier has had a big role at the convention over the 50 years. He is a frequent moderator of panels and a guest of honor at many events. He believes the convention will remain in San Diego for the long term (Comic-Con International recently signed an extention through 2024). This is despite the fact that Comic-Con is facing growing competition for the biggest stars and events. Other conventions have launched in cities across the country, and some companies, including Disney, have created their own events. "Yes, there are conventions that are trying to be bigger or wish they could be Comic-Con," Evanier said. "Those are all commercially run. The Comic-Con we go to in San Diego is a non-profit organization."Evanier is scheduled to moderate more than a dozen panels during this year's anniversary convention. 2171

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego Humane Society is asking for the public’s help in finding the person responsible for seriously injuring a little dog.On Aug. 5, at around 5:30 p.m., a passerby found a severely injured Chihuahua in an alley near 339 S. 39th Street in San Diego’s Mountain View area.Humane Society officials said the one-year-old dog is in critical but stable condition “with a guarded prognosis” and is being cared for at the Humane Society’s Pilar & Chuck Bahde Center for Shelter Medicine.Details on the dog's injuries were not released.San Diego Humane Society Humane Law Enforcement Chief Bill Ganley said, “We are hoping someone might recognize this dog and can help us find the person who did this. This is a helpless animal who did not stand a chance against the person who decided to hurt him. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This year marks 75 years since many turning points in World War II, including the end of the war on Aug. 14. Now, the men and women who served are in their 90s and many say despite the time, they remember exactly where they were the moment they found out the war was over.“We were told you’re just going on a flight, and we were told you don’t have to, the wars over,” said 93-year-old Navy veteran Al Hansen.“The war ended and they let us all, gave us liberty for the day,” remembered 94-year-old Navy veteran Don Hubbard.RELATED: WWII veteran honors D-Day anniversary with world-wide bell ringingTo commemorate the day, the USS Midway held a ceremony. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Starlight Bowl in Balboa Park is facing a setback after thieves broke into the theater.According to San Diego Police, an unknown suspect or suspects forced their way into the building between Oct. 17 and 19. The thieves ransacked two separate, secured structures on the property.A number of high-end television production systems, autographed guitars, studio cameras, and other items were stolen. “The doors were physically broken down,” said Steve Stopper, founder of Save Starlight. “There’s been a lot of vandalism and theft and they had to have been here a long, long time.”Stopper said his foundation has been working for five years to bring life back to the theater that closed down in 2012. The City of San Diego has offered support to his organization.Repairs were being completed after a tree came crashing down on the Starlight Bowl months ago, lifting asphalt in the parking lot and crushing part of the building.“This is definitely kicking us back to almost a starting point again,” said Stopper.Security cameras and alarms were turned off as repairs to the building were underway.Stopper said the items stolen were worth well over ,000. Many, including the autographed guitars, were set to be auctioned off at a gala next year in an effort to raise money for the revitalization project.“We need someone to step up and help us,” said Stopper. “We need new options for the future. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego District Attorney's Office announced a new program Thursday that would send low-level offenders to the classroom instead of a jail cell.The Community Justice Initiative requires 12 hours of cognitive behavioral therapy, as well as four hours of community service. The participant then has their case dropped and their record sealed. They wouldn't have to report an arrest on any future job application."Some people deserve second chances," DA Summer Stephan said.The program started in the South Bay in April 2018, expanded to the East County in January 2019, then North County in May. It's funded in part by the county, grants, and 0 from each criminal."That amount is less than any fine they would have gotten on any case," Stephan said.So far the program has seen 586 participants. 296 of them completed the program.Director of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adult Justice Programs and Social Worker Laura Soto spoke of one of her patients who completed the program, "she [Amanda] began to spend more time with her son, she got a diploma and she got an office job, and then she started cosmetology school."Amanda was arrested for stealing. Through the program she shifted her mindset away from entitlement."Amanda began to think about the consequences, and things to be grateful for and that made her happy," Soto said."The most common offenses in the program are in fact shoplifting, non DUI traffic violations or vandalism,." Stephan said only non-violent and non-sexual offenders qualify."Misdemeanor convictions can have damaging affects that last a lifetime," she added. Stephan said criminals will continue turning to a life of crime if they can't find a way out.10News asked Stephan what she would say to critics who believe this program could incentivize criminal behavior. She said, "the people who complete the program recidivate at 2% which is so phenomenally low."She compared it to the 16 percent who didn't complete the program and were arrested for a crime again. 2027
