HANGZHOU, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Rescue efforts are continuing to save a worker trapped 18 meters under sea surface for almost 18 hours in Jiaxing Harbor, east China's Zhejiang Province, local authorities said.The worker, 43, surnamed Fan from central China's Hubei Province, was stuck at the bottom of a steel shielding canister in which he was working at 9 a.m. Thursday. The shielding canister deformed under sudden increase of hydraulic pressure from flood tide, according to local media report.The shielding canister, a part of an offshore platform, is one meter in diameter. Fan was working at the bottom of the canister that joins a cement column when the incident happened.Rescue staff said, "We are making slow progress because of complex geological conditions. The deformed section, about two to four meters under the sea surface, has been squeezed to only 3cm wide at the narrowest part."Thankfully, the shielding canister has not fractured, though seriously deformed.Rescue workers have decided to cut the cement column off the seabed to lift the shielding canister.Rescue efforts started at 10 a.m. Thursday. Food, including ham sausages and drinking water were supplied to the worker, through a flexible pipe. Fan asked for some cigarettes.Fan's family members have arrived at the site, praying for him at the bank.

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its hope that parties in the north and south Sudan will make continuous efforts for a peaceful, free, transparent and just referenda in Sudan in accordance with the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), and called for international efforts to create favorable conditions for the January referenda.The statement came as Yang Tao, the counsellor of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, was addressing an open Security Council meeting on Sudan."We hope the north and south Sudan will keep up the momentum, speed up the preparation for the referenda and ensure that the referenda are conducted in a peaceful, free, transparent and just manner in accordance with the CPA," Yang said.A referendum on self-determination for southern Sudan is scheduled to be conducted on Jan. 9, 2011, as it was stipulated in the CPA inked between north and south Sudan in 2005, which ended a two-decade civil war between the two sides."We call on the international community to create a favorable condition for the referenda and refrain from prejudging the outcome," he said. "No party should take unilateral action. No matter what outcome of the referenda might be, peace and stability in Sudan and the region must be ensured."Inhabitants of the south will vote on Jan. 9, 2011 on whether to secede from Sudan or remain united with the rest of the country. XIANGTAN, Hunan, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Experts and rescuers said Wednesday there was little hope of finding seven miners trapped underground alive after a coal mine was flooded nearly one day earlier in Hunan Province.The flood happened at 11:38 p.m. Tuesday in a pit at the Yide Coal Mine in Xiangtan County, trapping seven miners at a depth of 89 meters, said Zhao Jun, one of the experts involved in the rescue operation.The miners were believed to be stranded in a tiny area and it is possible they have drowned, said Zhao, who is also the chief engineer of Hunan's Coal Industry Bureau.In addition, the oxygen density was tested to be 8 percent at a depth of 83 meters in the flooded pit, indicating less oxygen at the level where the miners were trapped, which increases the possibility of suffocation, rescuers said.However, rescuers are still trying to install more pumps to drain the water.A spokesman with the emergency rescue headquarters said Yide, a small mine that had doubled its annual output to 60,000 tonnes after recently merging with a neighboring mine, had been warned due to safety concerns, both orally and in writing, over the past four weeks.Senior executives and major shareholders of the mine are now in police custody.
