The U.S. again broke its daily record for new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, as local health departments recorded 50,000 new confirmed cases of the virus, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins. The previous record was set Tuesday when health departments reported about 45,400 new cases. The figures highlight a continued spike in cases throughout the country over the past few weeks. Prior to the recent peak, the highest daily increase in confirmed cases came on April 24, when health departments reported about 36,400 new cases. The U.S. has recorded at least 38,900 new cases every day for the last week.(John's Hopkins)Because the Johns Hopkins database is reliant on reporting from local health departments, the data doesn't necessarily reflect a patient's day of infection. Daily case numbers are often higher mid-week because some local health departments or test centers may be closed on weekends. It's not just cases that are on the rise. According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, use of hospital beds, ICU beds and invasive ventilators have all risen in recent weeks after months of falling resource use. Many states have either "paused" or chosen to take steps back in their reopening process as cases and hospitalizations linked to the virus continue to rise.On Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci — the government's top expert on infectious diseases — called the recent spike in cases "disturbing," and said that he could foresee the U.S. reporting up to 100,000 new COVID-19 cases a day if recent trends continue. 1593
The Russian government denied Monday that it had interfered in the 2016 US election campaign in the Kremlin's first remarks since 13 Russian nationals were indicted Friday on charges of conspiring to defraud the US.Answering a question from CNN on a weekly telephone news conference, the spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Peskov, said the indictments provided "no substantial evidence" of Russian meddling, and that there were "no indications that the Russian state could have been involved.""We didn't see any substantial evidence of someone interfering in the domestic affairs," Peskov added. He said the US indictment "mentions Russian citizens, but we heard the accusations against the Russian state -- that the Russian state, the Kremlin and the Russian government were involved." 820
The White House is again rejecting calls for a national mask-wearing mandate.White House chief of staff Mark Meadows says in an appearance on “Fox and Friends” Monday morning that the president sees the issue as a “state-to-state” matter. He says that, “certainly a national mandate is not in order” and that “we’re allowing our local governors and our local mayors to weigh in on that.”New Jersey’s Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy has said he’d like to see a national strategy on the coronavirus, including a mask requirement. He says his state is seeing “small spikes in reinfection” from residents coming back from Florida, South Carolina and other virus hotspots, and the U.S. is “as strong as our weakest link right now.”Vice President Mike Pence has also rejected the idea of a national mandate, saying that’s up to governors and local health officials. 862
The Trump administration has closed the Washington Monument because of a recent visit by Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, who tested positive this week for the coronavirus. Interior spokesman Nicholas Goodwin says a couple of monument workers were quarantined as a result of Bernhardt's visit, forcing a staffing shortage and the monument's closure. The Interior Department announced Bernhardt's positive test result for the coronavirus on Wednesday. An advocacy group for parks criticized Bernhardt, saying he had failed to safeguard park employees overall during the pandemic. Goodwin said the interior secretary wore a mask and followed other health guidelines throughout the visit.According to USA Today, Goodwin plans to reopen the monument on Dec. 21. 768
