Short-video social media app TikTok is known for videos of dancing, singing and jokes. The app’s popularity has skyrocketed this year, especially with kids and teens."It’s mostly younger kids,” Kendall Wheeler explained. Wheeler, who has been dancing since she was 3 years old, has more than 440,000 followers on the app. The 17-year-old dancer downloaded the app when she was 15 as a way to share dance — and other — videos. Now, her content has expanded to acting, trends and other topics, and her image is attracting companies looking to sponsor or advertise their products with her.“A lot more companies have been reaching out to me,” she said. “I’ve made a pretty good amount of money from just going live.”Going live on the app and interacting with followers is the easiest way to make money on TikTok, and it allows for direct audience engagement. “My friends are pretty much from TikTok and I FaceTime them all the time,” she explained. “My social circle is on TikTok.”A 991

Students from high schools around the country have been working to compete in a national engineering challenge, and it’s all focused around helping people with disabilities. STEM students from 50 high schools across America entered the SourceAmerica Design Challenge, where participants create innovative technology to help people with disabilities in the workplace. That's A Wrap deli in North Potomac, Maryland is known for employing people with disabilities. That's why these STEM students from Poolsville High School picked this place for their school project. The group is one of the five finalist teams for the national engineering competition. Learning all the back-end technology on their own, the students invented an iPad application called "Recipe Easy," which aims to help people with disabilities work more efficiently. The students took all of the recipes from That’s A Wrap and shot videos on how to make the food, before uploading them to the app. Step by step, each recipe is show in an animation and text. It’s also hands-free. "When you hold up a spatula, the camera will detect it and it will move to the next step of a recipe, so Steven has that as a guide for him," says junior Anjali Murthy on the help it provides one of the workers at the deli, Steven.Charissa Garcia with SourceAmerica says the students from the five finalist schools will present their devices on stage for a panel of judges. "They come together. They build a project to really focus on independence, empowerment, increased wages and increased employment opportunities for people with disabilities," Garcia explains of the program. Although these students from Poolsville High School want to take the trophy home, they say they already feel good about making an impact. Regular maintenance is key in keeping your car healthy for a long time. Car owners often get their car prepared for the winter, but auto mechanics say summer is an important time to have maintenance done to your vehicle. Brad Deen, with Import Mechanics in Denver, says there are a few tips you can do to keep your car running in the high heat, and for years to come. “Most important thing getting into the summer months is the cooling system,” he says. “That’s about the biggest thing you’re going to see when it comes to leading to a breakdown.”Deen says start with making sure the fluid levels in your vehicle are correct, like the coolant and oil. We all know a proper oil change is important, but in the summer months, your oil can thin out quickly. That can lead to serious engine problem.“Next, belts and hoses,” he says. “What you are looking for are cracks in belts, cracks in hoses, as well as swelling in the hoses.”Belts and hoses are essential to keeping the cooling and air conditioning system functioning. There’s a misconception that winter is the only season that can destroy a car’s battery due to temps.“The high temperatures in the summer can actually lead to the acid in the battery to evaporate faster,” Deen explains. “Then, all of a sudden, you can find yourself with a battery that is not charged.”Also, the heat from the asphalt can deflate your tires. “Tires are a safety issue any season,” he says. “Making sure the pressure is correct is paramount.”Lastly, getting a full-service maintenance on your vehicle every 12,000 miles is also a great idea. 1588
