NANJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday started to extend a memorial wall to engrave more names of those massacred by Japanese aggressors more than 70 years ago in Nanjing.After extension, the "wailing wall", a part of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, will have 10,324 names on it, curator Zhu Chengshan said.The wall was engraved with 3,000 names when it was first built in 1995, and the list was expanded to more than 8,600 names in 2007 when the memorial reopened after a major repair and extension to mark the 70th anniversary of the massacre.The original wall was 43 meters long and 3.5 meters high. The extension will lengthen the wall by 26.5 meters, with 1,655 more names added to it, according to Zhu.Nanjing Massacre happened during World War II after Japanese troops occupied Nanjing, then capital of China, on Dec. 13, 1937. More than 300,000 Chinese were killed in the month-long atrocity.To collect the names of the victims is an important but tough job in the research of the massacre, as it is hard to seek witnesses and related documents decades after the holocaust, said Zhu.

BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner said Thursday that prices for agricultural produce and materials continued to fall from Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, with some varieties seeing big drops. Food prices monitored in 36 major cities fell 0.2 percent from the previous week, said the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). Vegetable prices fell the most, with wholesale prices dropping for the fourth consecutive week and 16 out of 18 staple vegetables falling in price from early November, it said. Radish prices went down 32 percent, Chinese cabbage 28.6 percent, and rape 27.3 percent. Prices of lettuces, cucumbers, celery, cabbages and eggplants all dropped by more than 20 percent. Meanwhile, vegetable prices in 18 of the 36 cities were down by more than 15 percent on a monthly basis, said the NDRC. Prices in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province, went down 35.8 percent, those in Xiamen, southeast China's Fujian Province, fell 31.9 percent, while in Haikou City, capital of Hainan Province in south China, prices dropped 27.2 percent. Also, prices in eight cities, including Shenyang, Shenzhen and Ningbo, were all down by more than 20 percent. Prices of production materials fell for a third consecutive week, according to the NDRC. Compared with the previous week, prices of major production materials fell 0.4 percent, up 0.3 percentage points. Urea prices moved down 1.5 percent week on week, while natural gas prices dropped 1.3 percent week on week. Prices of aluminum fell 0.8 percent, and those of rubber were down by 0.2 percent. Official figures showed that the country's grain output rose 2.9 percent year on year in 2010 to 546.41 million tonnes, marking the seventh consecutive year of growth for China's grain output. Food prices account for about a third of the weight of China's consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, and the falling prices in farm produce and production materials are expected to ease some inflationary pressure. China's CPI rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent year on year in October and the hike was largely attributed to a 10.1 percent surge in food prices. BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Foreign direct investment (FDI) into China rose for the 15th consecutive month in October, indicating China remains a favored investment destination for foreign businesses.Inbound FDI increased 7.86 percent year on year in October to 7.663 billion U.S. dollars, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Tuesday.The October figure means inbound FDI for the first 10 months of the year totaled 82.003 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 15.71 percent.MOC spokesman Yao Jian said at a press conference China remains a hot spot for foreign investors.Foreign businesses have begun to shift their investments from export-orientated sectors to domestic market-orientated businesses because of China's improved legal system and its expanding market, he said.In the first 10 months of the year, the manufacturing sector received 47.59 percent of FDI inflows while the services industry got 45 percent.A total of 21,181 foreign-invested enterprises were approved for establishment during the 10-month period, up 16.62 percent from a year earlier.In September inbound FDI grew 6.14 percent year on year.The acceleration in the rate of inbound FDI growth was due to the U.S.'s second round of quantitative easing, some analysts explained.Yao denied the link but said the Chinese government is keeping an eye on liquidity.
