(KGTV) — The officer at the center of a controversial arrest filmed in La Mesa is no longer employed with the department, according to the city.City manager Greg Humora said in a release on Friday that former LMPD officer Matt Dages is "not employed by the City of La Mesa in any capacity."The city could not comment on whether Dages resigned or was terminated.In June, video surfaced showing the May 27 altercation that had already started between Dages and 23-year-old Amaurie Johnson at Grossmont Trolley Station. In the video, Dages is seen pushing Johnson into a sitting position on a bench and eventually handcuffing and arresting him. (KGTV) -- If you don’t believe cats actually get stuck in trees, just ask the Lakeside Fire Department.The cat somehow managed to climb a tall palm tree Sunday morning in Lakeside but wasn’t able to get back down. Fire crews used an engine and a 65-foot tall ladder to rescue the stranded pet. “This rare incident is an example of our firefighters out in the community doing what needs to be done,” the department said in a post on social media. 471

LARGO, Fla. — While many of us have spent the year wishing things were better, 93-year-old Virgil Sweet has spent the year trying to make it better.Sweet started by giving away his ,200 government stimulus check."I thought, 'I don’t really have a need for that so I’m going to give it to someone who does,'" said Sweet. ABC Action News did a previous story in May to help Sweet get the word out that he was asking people impacted by the pandemic to write him letters about why they needed the money. That story reached people all over the country. Letters poured in from people who needed help and Sweet picked one family to get his check."I found a lady who has two children. One of them is autistic and she has brain cancer so she got the ,200," said Sweet.But Sweet couldn’t stop thinking about the other heartbreaking letters. So he asked others to donate their checks to help. "We did it the old fashioned way, snail mail. We didn’t use email. We didn’t use TikTok or any of that stuff I don’t know anything about," said Sweet.Sweet got donations from California to Pennsylvania, from Alaska to Florida.He raised ,780 for more than 60 families across the country — and he did it from the comfort of his own home using mail as his main source of communication.Sweet says there are still many people in need and he hopes his story shows people you can make a difference no matter what age or what tools you have."You just have to have the passion to help people and you can do it from sitting in your own home," said Sweet.This story was first reported by Wendi Lane at WFTS in Tampa Bay, Florida. 1653

LEXINGTON, Kent. - Students on the University of Kentucky campus will put a theory to the test by using more testing."Anyone who is quarantined would be tested on day three, day five, day seven, day 10, and day 14," said Dr. Robert DiPaola, the College of Medicine dean.The goal is to see if the 14-days of quarantine are a little excessive."Whether that initial testing period, so, for example, day three, or day five, or day shirk, was predictive of them being OK on day 14," DiPaola added.If enough tests come back negative in under 14 days, researchers feel as if they'd have their answers, and students might be able to get back outside much sooner."I think it's awesome," said freshman Blake Burden. "To shorten quarantine and get back to class and start socializing and seeing people again would be great."There's an added medical benefit to this program too."Mental health and well-being.
