SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – On Friday, the president of San Diego's Christian Youth Theater (CYT) held a press conference addressing this week's claims by several former students that they experienced sexual misconduct or sexual abuse by former teachers.CYT President Janie Russell Cox said the San Diego branch will remain dark until further notice as they investigate these abuse claims. “We are fully committed to the safety of every single child and we are grieving for every single individual whom we love and we care so deeply for. We apologize. [We] love you,” Cox added.The El Cajon-based program was founded 40 years ago and is for students ranging from 4 years old to 18 years old. CYT claims to be the largest youth theater group in the country with branches nationwide.Artist Brian Justin Crum, who went on to become a finalist on America's Got Talent, told ABC10 News on Friday that when he was 13 years old, his former CYT teacher invited him to a gay pride event. “I remember him questioning my sexuality and saying basically, like, you should come to this thing and see what you think and see how you feel when you're there and we can go together. I'll take you,” Crum said. “It was creepy. It felt inappropriate.”Crum said he was not assaulted but boundaries were crossed. “There was definitely a culture there where the teachers and the students were too close,” he added.On Tuesday, attorney Jessica Pride told ABC10 News that she's representing a former student who claims to have been sexually abused and several other former students have been contacting the law firm. “I think over the next couple of weeks as things unfold, you're going to see that this was just rampant at CYT and that they didn't do anything to protect these children,” said Pride.When asked Friday about whether staff ignored complaints from former students against former teachers, Cox replied, “I can't answer that. I don't have enough knowledge to know what decisions were made at that time and that's part of our investigation to find out.”Cox told reporters that CYT is starting a diversity committee and looking at doing restructuring to diminish favoritism, nepotism, and discrimination. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nearly a year after the city opened a facility for the homeless to store their belonging in, residents say they are still being impacted.“There’s human feces all over the alleys,” said one community member during the public comment.At the meeting, a Lieutenant with the San Diego Police Department’s homeless outreach team announced they would be adding a foot patrol in the area starting next week.For the first time, representatives from the County of San Diego said they will also be diverting resources to the area to help with mental health issues.Meantime, the city is searching for another location to open a storage facility in District 9.While the exact location has not yet been announced, officials said two sites are currently being considered, at least one of them is in City Heights. 824

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - President Trump's call for some teachers to be armed is sparking local debate.Linda bought her first handgun three years ago for personal protection. She's a local music teacher at elementary, middle and high schools who applauds the President's idea. "It's a good idea because we're going against violence people doing violent things. I can't protect all 30 of my students with pencils, erasers and rulers," said Linda.RELATED: Trump pushing to 'finally do something' on gunsEric Heins, President of the California Teachers Association, is in town for the state Democratic convention and says schools should not be a war zone. "To try and militarize a student campus by introducing more guns is insane. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- More than a thousand job seekers attended the annual Jobtoberfest at Pechanga Arena in San Diego Tuesday..One of those looking for a new position was Mirella Solis. She's living with cerebal palsy which has kept her in a wheelchair. But, it's not holding her back. "When people look at me. It's been really hard, but I overcome that. You can do anything, I tell people you can do anything in the world," said Solis.Solid has worked in the security field and wants to move onto bigger opportunities so she decided to attend this job fair.Charlene Autolino is the chair of San Diego Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, which put the fair together. She said the event gives many more than just a job, but motivation to strive for more."Imagine being told for years that you can't do anything because of this disability, or you aren't capable of able which is not true," said Autolino.The organizer of this event will also be hosting a similar job fair specifically for veterans in November. 1031
