SAN DIEGO — The latest shutdown order has not been kind to San Diego restaurants this holiday season, but some chose to remain open on Christmas despite being relegated to takeout-only service. Harry Kim made the executive decision to keep north park diner open on Christmas for the first time. And to say the restaurant is stretched thin would be an understatement.“it’s hitting us really hard,” Kim said. “When we had outside dining I had employees, five of them. Right now I just work with me and my wife.”Kim has owned the diner since 2007, and says opening on Christmas provides an opportunity for more sales if everyone else was closed. He says it paid off with some extra takeout orders and others through UberEats and GrubHub.Meanwhile, at downtown's Gaslamp BBQ, a skeleton crew handled a steady stream of takeout orders. Owner Tarik Marogy always keeps the restaurant open on Christmas, so 2020 would be no different.“We know we are going to be busy today because a lot of the restaurants usually close,” Marogy said.Marogy says the barbecue has been hit hard in the pandemic. He reduced his employees from 20 to 8. In all, nearly 110,000 San Diegans worked in local restaurants in November, down more than 15 percent compared to November 2019, according to the latest state data available. That was before the most recent shutdown order went into effect.Margoy said, however, that Christmas night orders exceeded his expectations.“I didn’t expect that I'm going to have that much business because of the Covid. But I was surprised, and thank God business was good,” Marogy saidHe says he's hopeful things are going to get better in 2021. And the barbecue will be open January 1 to ring in the new year. 1721
SAN DIEGO — Todd Brown doesn’t hold back when he talks about the impact Coronavirus restrictions have made on his bottom line.“It’s been basically devastating to us,” he said.Brown owns multiple restaurants in San Diego - including Bub’s in Pacific Beach. This past Fourth of July weekend was not what he was hoping for.“With the holiday weekend, our numbers, they were tremendously disappointing,” Brown said.It's going to get worse before it gets better.That's because Brown is going to have to shut down his indoor service for three weeks,Along with a variety of other business owners in the county.The county made the Governor’s monitoring list for three days in a row, meaning restrictions are going into effect at restaurants, tasting rooms, breweries, entertainment centers, zoos, theaters and card rooms for the next three weeks.“I say we are going back instead of forward,” said Patrizia Branchi, who owns Operacaffe downtown.Branchi said business has really suffered during the pandemic - with sales down to 35 percent.These new restrictions still allow her to serve customers outside - but with social distancing rules, her patio only holds six people.“I don’t want to think about closing because to me that means my family is going to have a problem,” Branchi said. “I have me and my daughter, and the other partner, which is with us since ever. What do we do?"And to make matters more difficult, Brown and Branchi both say they have all but exhausted their Paycheck Protection Program funds - meaning they won't have any stimulus money to get them and their workers through this new round of closure. 1621
SAN DIEGO -- Video taken Tuesday shows people climbing on top of the border fence near Friendship Park near the Pacific Coast US/Mexico border as the migrant caravan approaches.According to a Border Patrol spokesperson, agents are keeping watch on the U.S. side of the park, but aren’t aware of anyone climbing all the way over onto the U.S. side of the beach.Border Patrol says it’s technically not legal for people to sit on the fence because it’s on U.S. soil, but no arrests are being made at this time.It’s unclear whether or not the group is with the migrant caravan.The incident comes as U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the closure of several northbound border lanes in San Ysidro and Otay Mesa.The closures are expected to cause delays. 765
SAN DIEGO — When it comes to takeout and delivery, breakfast food just doesn't really cut it.That's a problem for Johan Engman and his Rise and Shine Restaurant group, with the flagship Breakfast Republic."Imagine an eggs Benedict, a poached egg with hollandaise sauce. It doesn't travel that well," Engman said Tuesday.Sales are down more than 90 percent and 450 employees were just furloughed amid the lockdown."It's heartbreaking, but what makes it even worse is that we're in the holiday season," Engman said.But instead of simply giving up and hoping for another round of stimulus, Engman is keeping a couple extra workers on at Breakfast Republic's Mission Valley location - preparing what could turn into hundreds of free meals everyday for impacted workers or anyone in need - no questions asked."I mean, we're hemorrhaging money, but I think when the going gets tough, that's when you need to show character," Engman said.Two years ago, Rise and Shine Restaurants created a nonprofit that got a dollar for every sold breakfast burritos, one of the most popular items. That money has, for instance, been used to make thousand-dollar donations to other nonprofits nominated by customers.And during the march lockdown, the nonprofit bought ,000 worth of meals for the public - about 6,400, and it has about that much cash left this time."We have a little chunk of money there that we want to put to good use," Engman said.And while breakfast is in the name - it's not breakfast being served for free. SAN DIEGO (AP) — A congressional watchdog agency says the Trump administration's plan to erect hundreds of miles of barriers along the border with Mexico fails to adequately consider costs, potentially raising the price and creating delays.The administration has estimated it will cost billion for 722 miles (1162 kilometers) of wall but that was based on average cost per mile.The Government Accountability Office said Monday that costs can vary considerably based on the slope and topography, land acquisition costs and other factors.The GAO says that without more information there is increased risk that the wall "will cost more than projected, take longer than planned, or not fully perform as expected." 721
