San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - California is the biggest prizes in the 2020 primary and the remaining Democratic presidential candidates are making a final push to turn out voters in San Diego. Much of their final efforts is focused on getting supporters in the South Bay."We're putting people out in their own neighborhoods, talking to neighbors they already know, making sure they're filling out their absentee ballots," said Joe Biden campaign staffer Jack Hurley.Biden opened an office in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista shortly after the Iowa Caucus. While Biden does not have as big a staff or infrastructure as other campaigns, they have seen a boost in volunteers since Biden won the South Carolina primary. "I want to see change and I wanted Joe Biden to be that change, and that means I needed to get to work," said Russell, who walked in to the Biden office Monday to volunteer.Bernie Sanders has a large organization in San Diego, based out of its headquarters in Barrio Logan. Monday, teams worked in shifts to train volunteers to canvass the South Bay, focused particularly on San Ysidro. "Our goal is turning out voters that a lot of them haven't actually voted before. So we're mainly focused on turnout at this point in time," one staffmember told the volunteers."It was tough in the beginning," said Sanders volunteer France Hanna about his first efforts at doorknocking. "But I realize as I share my personal Bernie story with all the doors that I knock on that I have a lot of commonalities with people."The Sanders campaign is particularly working to utilize a relatively new law in California that allows ballot delivery, meaning that campaign volunteers can pick up voters' ballots and deliver them to be counted. Because Sanders emphasizes turnout out non-traditional voters, especially young voters and people of color, ballot delivery could provide a boon, making it easier people who perhaps may not have gone to the polls to cast a ballot. The Mike Bloomberg campaign is also working to reach LatinX voters in the South Bay. "One of the main things we understand about the South Bay is that there is the most potential to turn out voters," said staffer Jesus Cardenas. Bloomberg has teams of volunteers knocking on doors and making calls. "It's going to be a little bit crazy, but it's going to be fun," Cardenas said. "Our goal is to make sure we get as many people out to the polls as possible." 2437

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- As more than more children are carried into Emergency Rooms with gunshot wounds, the Medical community is coming together to say enough is enough. With their rifles drawn and heads on a swivel, deputies escort students at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita-- the latest location of a deadly school shooting. Just as law enforcement and educators are speaking out about the tragedy, so is the medical community."There's no more of a horrible feeling than to tell a family member that their child is now deceased and no longer can play," Jeffery Upperman, MD, said. Vanderbilt Children's Hospital's Surgeon-In-Chief, Dr. Upperman said Thursday morning's incident hit home. He is a long-time resident of Los Angeles County, who just recently transferred to Tennessee. "Hearing about the tragedy, I could've been one of those trauma doctors in the bay."He is in San Diego this week with more than 500 medical professionals at the Pediatric Trauma Society Conference, to learn about the latest medical treatments that focus on the care of injured children. Dr. Peter Masiakos is the Pediatric Trauma Director at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is speaking about the effects of gun violence. "We all know that it's far better to act on the side of prevention, instead of acting to fix the wounds," Dr. Masiakos said. He said too many kids come into the E.R. with gunshot wounds - via homicide, accident, or suicide. He said new federal policies need to be enacted to protect them, just like seat-belt legislation and the fight against tobacco."We have to engage the community like in the same way that Dr. C. Everett Koop did almost 40 years ago when he identified the issue of smoking and mitigated that," Dr. Masiakos said. They said school shootings are no longer just a gun issue, a school issue, or a law enforcement issue. They said it is a public health crisis."Physicians, seeing what we see, we are in our lane, and we talk about the issue of gun violence as we know what it is. And people need to step up and figure out a way to fix this because another Santa Clarita is not acceptable to us," Dr. Masiakos said. 2148

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --The FDA has placed new restrictions on a controversial birth control device called Essure.  The maker of the implant, Bayer, will only be allowed to sell to providers who agree to fully inform women about the risks and side effects.  A San Diego woman who had the Essure implant is now suing the physician who performed the procedure.  She says she wasn't given enough information and wants to warn others about her experience.  Three months after Essure was implanted she began experiencing severe pain. She eventually had a full hysterectomy.   603

SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) - A modern way to recycle your cell phones is meant to be good for the environment and a good way for you to make a little money, but some people worry the real winners could be thieves. 10News investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner visited ecoATM's company headquarters in Sorrento Valley to ask about the controversial kiosks. The company has more than a dozen kiosks around the City of San Diego and thousands of more kiosks across the country. The kiosks buy unwanted devices like cell phones.Less than one percent of sold devices get stolen but some cities have banned the kiosks because of security concerns, a spokesperson told 10News.In San Diego, the booths are located in busy shopping areas like inside the Ralph's in the Midway District and inside the Fashion Valley mall."We offer cash on the spot at our kiosks," says ecoATM's Chase Freeman.Retired law enforcement officer Phil Ramos says, "It's a great, convenient thing for a legitimate consumer, but it really invites crime. It's an easy, quick way for bad guys to make money." The concern is that criminals can make money by trying to sell stolen or fake phones.10News asked Freeman if his system is bulletproof?"I don't think that any system out there is bulletproof but what I can tell you is that we're very on top of every transaction," he responds. The ecoATM kiosks have been banned in Baltimore and in Riverside after backlash from law enforcement. 10News obtained a copy of a photo taken this August by a concerned citizen in Las Vegas. The background of the image shows a stack of phones on top of an ecoATM kiosk. In the frame of the photo, you can see the elbow, leg, and the shoe of a man who reportedly brought those phones to the ecoATM kiosk.10News asked Freeman about that man. "It seems that many of those devices were, in fact, fake devices," says Freeman. On the day the photo was taken, the man apparently sold 13 devices but only four of them were real phones.EcoATM says it didn't contact police because none of the phones were reported as stolen. Freeman says that the man is now banned from making any sales at the kiosks.Georgia police report that a 17-year-old used a stolen ID to cash in on 26 stolen phones. She was later caught and prosecuted with the help of ecoATM. "Every transaction that is conducted at a kiosk across the country is kept in a database that is available to local law enforcement," says Freeman. The company reports that 8,993 devices were purchased in San Diego from January 1st, 2019 to October 1st, 2019, but only 27 were of investigative interest and requested by law enforcement. The San Diego Police Department couldn't tell 10News how many stolen phones have been found at ecoATMs because it doesn't track the location of recovery.Freeman tells 10News that there are extensive security measures in place. Some of those measures include a camera that takes your photo while your driver's license is verified. For many kiosks, you have to provide a fingerprint. Live agents are constantly monitoring all transactions. The company says that the nationwide sale of stolen devices is a very minor issue. "It's something that does not happen frequently at all. A fraction of a quarter of a percent is pretty small when you look at the 23 million devices [that] we've diverted from landfills," adds Freeman.Resources:Click here for FCC guidelines on how to protect your device and what to do if your phone or tablet is stolen:https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/protect-your-mobile-deviceClick here for more from Apple on what to do if your iPhone or iPad is lost or stolen:https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201472Click here if you've updated to iOS13 to learn about the new Find My app which now can help you find your devices even when they're offline:https://www.apple.com/icloud/find-my/ 3836

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Trying to plan for life’s most joyful experiences has become another source of stress during the pandemic. With large weddings still on hold, couples remain in limbo.“These are people who’ve planned their weddings, spent a year, maybe two years, planning their wedding. And it’s just starting to crumble beneath them a little bit. Everything is being just ripped away, all these things they had planned," said Sara Whittaker, owner of Desert Born Studios in San Diego. And when weddings came to a halt, so did Whittaker's livelihood. “I looked at a lot of my other friends who are vendors in this industry and watched their years kind of plummet. And everyone struggling financially and still wanting to work,” said Whittaker. Knowing vendors were in need of work, and couples eager to get married, Whittaker set out to create a COVID-friendly wedding experience.“As a small business owner you really have to adapt or die," she said. "If you can’t figure out a way to roll with the punches that the world gives you, you’re not going to make it.”Teaming up with industry vendors, she crafted an all-inclusive wedding elopement experience. The ,500 package includes florals, hair and makeup, photos, video, and a wedding officiant. Couples can invite up to 15 people to the elopement ceremony in Joshua Tree National Park.Bree Steffen, owner of Pause Creative Collective, built and designed a desert-themed ceremony backdrop. "It was just really cool to be a part of something this intimate and special while still being safe. It was awesome to capture these couples being so strong and committed to each other and finding a safe way to celebrate their love, even during a pandemic!" said Steffen, who is also the event videographer. After months of wedding planning stress and anxiety, Izzy Van Vleet opted for the desert elopement soon after hearing about it. “We had a big warehouse venue picked out, with 200 guests. It was going to be a big celebration. I had a lot of the planning done and it didn't look like those plans were going to work out." said Van Vleet. She liked the idea of an intimate wedding with her closest friends and family. “Now, we get to spend time with the people that are most important, that we would’ve wanted to spend time with anyway and just really celebrate our love and getting married," said Van Vleet. “It’s not so much about who’s got the biggest floral budget or the most expensive dress. It’s about marrying the person you love, and having those people that you love the very most being able to witness it as well," said Whittaker. She believes it's a trend that could continue after the pandemic and plans to create new elopement experiences in the future. 2725
