SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The City Council is expected to decide on a proposal that would turn two purchased hotels into housing for San Diego’s homeless, and on Monday, Mayor Kevin Faulconer made a push in favor of the plan.Part of California’s Project Homekey includes an initiative to provide more homeless Californians with permanent housing amid the COVID-19 crisis. The project’s budget is 0 million, with million for San Diego County. At a Monday press conference, Faulconer said, “Our goal was to reimagine our homeless system to get folks into housing more quickly with an emphasis on 'quickly.’ Tomorrow, the City Council will have the opportunity to put these dollars to good use for hotels to be transformed into 332 new housing units.”The city is working with San Diego's Housing Commission (SDHC) to turn two Residence Inns -- one in Mission Valley's Hotel Circle and the other in Kearny Mesa -- into apartment-style homes for the homeless. The hotels-turned-apartments would ideally create 300 units for over 400 homeless individuals, many of whom are currently staying inside the San Diego Convention Center's temporary housing facility. But some San Diegans like Josh, who resides next door to the Residence Inn in Mission Valley, are in favor of finding solutions for the homeless crisis but against the locations the SDHC has chosen."If you see the homeless shelters in downtown, those don't look like the best places on outside. A lot of loitering, crowds, so we're not informed on what this will look like," said Josh.He said if the purchase gets approved, he wants there to be strict guidelines for tenants."People who are elderly, have kids, or demonstrated work history. A qualified facility where you have to meet standards to come in,” Josh told ABC 10News.The City Council is slated to discuss the proposal and release a decision on Tuesday.Meanwhile, city leaders and the SDHC said security will be ramped up around the new apartments, with two live-in managers on site and residents will be the only ones allowed inside. If the project is approved, the transformation could happen as early as December 2020. 2140

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The non-profit organization Border Angels hosted its 32nd-anniversary dinner on Saturday. The dinner raises money to help continue providing the services they offer to immigrants in the community, including water drops for border crossers, legal services, and shelter. The migrant caravan and the upcoming election were hot topics of conversation during the dinner. This year the organization honorees were Margarita Zavala, Kirsten Zittlau and Jacqueline Arellano. Zavala and Zittlau are attorneys. Arellano is the water drop coordinator for Border Angels. Border Angels' founder Enrique Morones tells 10News that he decided to honor women this year. He also encouraged everyone to go out and vote on November 6th saying the president is sending the wrong message about immigrants. Guests at the event also reacted to President Donald Trump deploying the military to the border. At a campaign event, the president was not backing down, saying migrants need to come to the U.S. legally.   1051

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California Independent System Operator again Sunday reminded consumers throughout the state conserve energy, warning of more possible rotating outages.SDG&E said early in the day Sunday that customers should be prepared for possible outages to be called from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.The news comes after a flex alert was issued statewide from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily through Monday, September 7.“Energy conservation is essential in helping reduce the possibility of widespread rotating outages and the number of people impacted. Understandably, it may be difficult to reduce energy use during the high temperatures and the ongoing pandemic. However, everyone is urged to do their part to cut back on energy use, if health and safety permits, during this critical time,” SDG&E wrote.Just before 6:30 p.m., CAISO issued a Stage 2 emergency and warned that consumers should conserve power until 9 p.m. to avoid rolling outages. Stage 2 is the step before rolling outages are ordered. The energy provider said turning off air conditioners, avoiding the use of the dishwasher, clothes washers and dryers, and switching off unused lighting can all help conserve energy.SDG&E also said the Valley Fire, which has currently burned 1,500 acres near Alpine, has impacted electrical equipment and caused power outages.SDG&E said it’s working with Cal Fire in an effort to restore power quickly. 1421

Each student is eligible to apply for the top honor of being designated as the "Colonel". This year, Sunset Hills student Maddie Smith won. "It's a great feeling," she said.
