(KGTV) - A new group formed on social media in response to the destruction of looters and arsonists after Saturday's peaceful protest against injustice.La Mesa Civil Defense is a Facebook group formed Monday by Attorney Scott McMillan. McMIllan was devastated by the chaos Saturday night, "we lost our museum, we lost our art gallery, we lost two of our banks... I did not want to see it [La Mesa] burn to the ground."McMillan said the goal of the page is to communicate how they will protect the town should anything happen in the future, "La Mesa Civil Defense is going to stand in front of the buildings with fire extinguishers and garden hoses and their presence."He said he stood at Nebo Dr. and Lemon Ave. from 7:30 p.m. Saturday night until 6 a.m. guarding local businesses and trying to get looters to stop causing destruction.He said a few people spoke with him.One man explained he was upset about George Floyd's death, McMiIllan said he responded saying, "how does breaking (a neighboring boutique that's been around for 10 years) her windows and stealing her merchandise, honor the memory of George Floyd?"He said the man left and came back to tell McMillan he was right.Those are the conversations he hopes blossom from this group and bring peace to La Mesa.McMillan said he is not asking anyone to use lethal force unless they feel like their life is being threatened.He said they are stepping in to help police and firefighters overwhelmed during these times. 10News reached out to La Mesa PD for a comment and have not heard back. 1571

LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Fort Myers, Florida brewery is creating a beer with a derivative of marijuana. It doesn't contain the THC that makes you high, but it does affect the aroma. Point Ybel Brewing Company has developed their SowFlo IPA, which they say is infused with essential oils from marijuana plants.The brew is available at their brewery in cans right now, but they plan to debut another big batch on tap on April 20th.Chief Photojournalist Curt Tremper takes a closer look in the video above and lets the brewers break it down for you in their own words.  596

(KGTV) - Students in a UC San Diego computer science course are still trying to understand why someone put a racial slur in their study guide dozens of times.The CSE 134B midterm study guide was a collaborative effort among the students. Only those in the class had access to it and could edit it anonymously.The night before the exam, students like Raymond Arevalo were shocked to see the n-word in it 85 times."I got on the study guide and saw the instance of the n-word, and then I noticed another instance," said Arevalo. "I was really shocked and kind of mad because this wasn't the first time this has happened before in other classes I've been."Arevalo says he has experienced a negative culture in the computer science program at the school. He says far too often minorities and women are targeted in the male-dominated field.He shared images of the defaced midterm online, hoping to raise awareness of the problems he believes exist."People continue to do these things knowing that they won't get in trouble, and it's like a small joke to them, if the person were to get in trouble that would be nice," said Arevalo.The story was first reported in The Triton, an independent, student-run news source. (CNS) - A fire burning near the Lake Hughes area is 12% contained Friday morning after scorching 11,000 acres and destroying three structures, authorities said.Firefighters, meanwhile, braced for dangerously hot weather caused by a heat wave this weekend."Near critical fire weather conditions could develop Friday afternoon and evening as gusty onshore winds could combine with warm and dry conditions in place," the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported Thursday.Crews were able to take advantage of improved fire weather conditions Thursday with slightly lower temperatures and moisture from the former hurricane Elida moving across the area, the department said."Current objectives include keeping the fire north of Castaic Lake, south of Highway 138, east of Red Rock Mountain and west of Tule Ridge," the department said.The fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest and was 12% contained as of 7 a.m. Friday, according to the u. S. Forest Service, which was battling the blaze with Los Angeles County Fire Department crews and assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterey Park, Long Beach and Santa Monica fire departments.The fire's size was listed as 11,000 acres Thursday night, with three structures destroyed and 5,420 threatened, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. No injuries have been reported."There have been areas of this fire that have not burned in decades, (and) it's in inaccessible terrain, which has added to the complexity of the fire," said Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby.Although some structures were lost, a number of structures were saved by firefighters, he said."It's going to be a hot, dry summer -- and it's going to be a very, very hot, dry weekend," Osby said.On Wednesday, the fire west of Palmdale had a "rapid rate of spread," amid temperatures in the mid-90s, low humidity and gusty winds, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
