(KGTV) - Andrew Van Woerkom has always known he was adopted, but never dwelled on the past for too long.“The biggest wonders I always had was I wonder what she looks like, it would be cool to see somebody that looks like me. I wonder what her name is,” he said.The now 32-year-old San Diego man, like many, has had a roller coaster of a year in 2020. For him, the chaos stems from multiple aspects of life.His family grew from four to five this year after his wife gave birth to their third child. But this baby wasn’t the only addition to the family.Andrew signed up for a genealogy website and through the years has reached out to any distant relatives who pop up, hoping to gain some insight into his biological family. No one ever responded, until this past summer.“She says I’m your aunt so and so. I was there for your birth coach. This is your mom’s name. This is her number and email address and here’s a little message from her and it’s way more information than I ever thought I would get and it’s just this flood of emotion,” he said.This message turned out to be the key to his past. He found out his birth mom, Melissa Willis, had him at 19 and knew she wasn’t ready to become a parent, so she chose to keep the baby and give him up for adoption. She later went on to get married and have five more kids, but always wondered what had happened to her first son. So, in 2020, hearing from him answered many of her own questions.“Then I lost it. Because for 32 years I wondered is he dead in a ditch, is he in jail, is he abused, is he happy,” said Melissa.Both of them vividly remember their first time on the phone together.From Melissa’s perspective: “he said I’m grateful for the choice you made me and the life you gave me, and I said I did everything I did out of love, all I wanted was for you to be happy and healthy and have everything I couldn’t give you.”Andrew says for him, he felt like he had to get out a lifetime of emotion in a handful of minutes.“First five ten minutes of the phone conversation was just sobbing and just expressing all this gratitude and emotion that I didn’t know was pent up inside and all these feelings I had for a person that gave me life. That gave me such an awesome opportunity to have a shot and have a chance at life,” he said.Since then, the two have started introducing each other to their families.This excitement coming at a hard time. Andrew’s adoptive mother is battling cancer for the fourth time, so he’s balancing the joy of finding his birth mom with the stress of supporting his adoptive mom, but thankful for the positive parts of life this year.“At a time when we’ve had so much fear and worry about what’s going to happen in the future, to have those joys… our son being born, meeting my birth mom… just how impeccable is that timing? It’s really gotten us through this year,” said Andrew.Both say that their new relationship is not replacing any other relationships, rather adding to them.When asked if she would change anything about her past, Melissa said she has no regrets.“The very best life I could’ve given myself and my baby is the one that I gave. The one I gave him and his family and me and my family. And I’m so grateful for that choice I made 31 years ago,” she said.This holiday season, everyone has found a new meaning of the word ‘family.’“Family is what you love. Family is what’s close to you, what you hold dear and yeah *we’re definitely not a cookie cutter, molded family. There’s definitely more of a different dynamic to it but I’m okay with it,” said Andrew. 3579

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- Scattered showers sprinkled all across San Diego County Saturday, bringing with it up to a quarter inch of rain. While rain totals were not significant, it was the reason for hundreds of car accidents.At 11:40 AM, 10News found a passenger van flipped onto its side. The driver said he was turning onto the Home on-ramp on WB 94 when he hydroplaned and flipped over. With some help from good Samaritans, he was able to climb up out of the passenger side door. He was not hurt. There were no passengers. One of many solo spin-outs happened on the 163 S to the 8 E on-ramp. The driver said at around 12:30 PM, he lost control of his truck at the top of the loop, then smashed into the concrete barrier. He said he felt lucky he did not roll down into a 50-foot embankment like another car did just a few hours prior in the same spot.RELATED: Check today's San Diego forecast10News crews also saw countless fender benders and flatbed tow trucks roaming the highways. Mother nature also wreaked havoc onto herself. At around 2:30 PM, a tree toppled onto Northbound 805 near Plaza South.Branches partially blocked the slow lane until clean up crews arrived.By afternoon, the rain clouds started to concentrate over North County. A three-car crash happened along Westbound 78 near the Nordahl Rd on-ramp in San Marcos. The small red vehicle ended up mangled, and the Prius somehow climbed up an embankment. Now, posts with the tag #IAmVanessaGuillen are circulating online, as people share their own stories of sexual assault in the military.Billiekai Boughton with the San Diego Women Veterans Network said any conversation like this can bring up hard memories for female veterans. She said while many women have a positive experience in the military, four out of five females report harassment or assault. The goal of her group is to support women through any of this pain. She says this is important in a community like San Diego which has about 26,000 female veterans.“For those of us who have been in the military and have had negative experiences, this can be a memory (sic) of feeling unsafe,” said Boughton.The group’s website says the most common request of women veterans in San Diego is to meet other women veterans. Their primary goal is to create a community for female military veterans, while also encouraging community service and policy change, which encourages and embraces the positive traits female vets have to offer.“Our friends remind us how strong we are. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- On most days at the North Side Shack in Point Loma, you'll find Pamela Olivera. She opened the now-thriving shop four years ago."If you're really motivated, if you really enjoy something, wanna do something, you only live once," said Olivera of the gamble that paid off.While she always had a passion for cooking, it wasn't always how she made a living. Olivera was once a paralegal. She thought was a good job for a single mother of three, but it wasn't a job she loved. So, she decided to change that.  She went to the San Diego Workforce Partnership location in Chula Vista, where she found a program that would give her money to retrain for a new career. In her case, it was culinary school. "For me, they offered me a ,000 grant, the program was ,000. That's a third of the cost of the school," said Olivera.The partnership provides a long list of resources for job seekers depending on their needs. The service is free. It's a valuable tool Olivera says more people should utilize.Other resources available include career counseling, job searches, typing certificates and Microsoft Word classes. San Diego (KGTV)- The San Diego Police Department will soon be adding 63 new officers on our streets. The department held the orientation for its 120th police academy this morning. This academy class is the largest class in over 25 years.“It’s very exciting,” says recruit Samantha Koegel. “I’m really excited to start this new journey of my life.”Koegel says her interest in the police force started began as a senior in high school after participating in a ride-along with an SDPD officer. Koegel graduated from Ramona High School. She received her degree from The University of Nevada- Reno, in Criminal Justice. All recruits went through an extensive screening process before being invited to the academy. “This is probably within 5 to 7 percent of all the applicants that we’ve gotten,” says Lt. Steve Waldheim. In the past, the San Diego Police Department has been understaffed. They currently have 1,800 officers but are budgeted for over 2,000. Lt. Waldheim says they the department needs more officers on the streets.“We need more officers in patrol so that they are out answering radio calls that can lower our response times.”The average salary for a San Diego Police recruit is ,000. After they become an officer, that number jumps to around ,000. “The salary now with SDPD, at the end of these pay raises that city council approved, we will be on par with the rest of the agencies around San Diego County,” says Lt.
