(KGTV) -- Billions of dollars could be at stake with Proposition 15.If passed, it would tax some commercial properties based on current market value instead of when it was bought. It could potentially bring in anywhere between .5 to .5 billion in new funding to local schools and governments, according to the Legislative Analyst’s Office.Brandon Foster is a small business owner in Oceanside. Even though he rents the space where his two gift shops are located, he is against Prop. 15.“We already have been told by our landlords, if that passes, they will be passing on that cost to us,” Foster said. “The landlords, a lot of them, have vacancies and things like that where they are struggling themselves. I understand why they need to pass that cost onto us.”The ad for No on Prop. 15 highlights a small business owner who said he had to close twice during the pandemic. The ad said Proposition 15 would raise “property taxes and rents on small business and they admit homeowners are next.”The change in property tax assessment would apply only to commercial or industrial properties valued at more than million. It would tax those properties at current market value rather than when it was bought.Residential and agricultural properties are not affected under Prop. 15.“They are very emotional, as ads are supposed to be,” said Lynn Reaser, chief economist at Pt. (KGTV) — A man has died after falling into a river at Yosemite National Park on Christmas Day.Few details about the man's death were released Friday by the park. A park spokesman told the AP that a statement was not issued sooner and the investigation was taking longer than usual because of the government shutdown.The man reportedly suffered a head injury on Dec. 25 in the Silver Apron area, between Vernal and Nevada Falls, according to ABC affiliate KGO.RELATED: Government shutdown affecting air travel, national park safetyPark rangers arrived at the scene within an hour and removed the man from the water. Though they began first aid immediately, the man died from his injuries.The death is the third at a national park since the government shutdown began. A woman was killed by a falling tree at Great Smoky National Park on Dec. 27 and the body of a missing 14-year-old girl from California was found on Dec. 24 after what appeared to be an accidental fall at Horseshow Bend Overlook in Arizona's Glen Canyon Recreation Area.The Associated Press and KGO-TV contributed to this report. 1103

(KGTV) — As fair season gets underway, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns attendees to practice safe hygiene at petting zoos and around animals.Animals in exhibits can can incredibly educational and fun, but can also put visitors at risk of various germs that can make people sick, including E. Coli and salmonella. From 2010-2015, the CDC said about 100 outbreaks were reported linked to animals in public settings like fairs, zoos, and farms.If interacting with animals — such as feeding, holding, or petting — or touching exhibit areas, guests should wash their hands afterward. Even if visitors don't interact with any animals, germs can still be spread from surfaces around exhibits.Running water and soap are best to use, but if not available, the CDC recommends using an alcohol-based sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. If gloves are worn, the CDC still recommends washing hands afterward.Especially at fairgrounds, food can find its way into animal exhibit areas. The CDC warns that visitors should not eat or drink around animals or their living areas. Food shouldn't be shared with animals and visitors should not eat or drink any raw, or unpateurized products.For parents, always supervise children around animals. Children 5 years old and younger should not have any contact with reptiles, amphibians, or live poultry because those animals are more likely to make them sick, according to the CDC.Parents should also leave strollers, toys, pacifiers, and cups outside animal exhibit areas. The CDC also says parents should make sure their children do not put their thumbs, fingers, or objects in their mouths when around animal areas. 1673
