SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society will make a group of animals displaced by the Camp Fire available for adoption Friday.Earlier this month, the organization's Emergency Response Team deployed to Butte County for 10 days to offer aid to hundreds of animals displaced or otherwise affected by the fire.The team returned to San Diego Dec. 19 with eight dogs and three cats, some of whom received treatment for burns caused by the fire.The owners of the 11 animals surrendered them to the Humane Society because they could no longer care for them. As a result, they will not have an owner seeking to find them once conditions improve in the areas affected by the fire.The Humane Society will put a group of the displaced animals up for adoption at 10 a.m. at its main campus, located at 5500 Gaines St. Available animals include 11-year old shepherd mix Cinnamon, a bonded pair of 6-year old miniature pinscher mixes named Pikachu and Panchie and a 3-year old cat named Sunshine.Residents can view the Humane Society's adoptable animals at sdhumane.org/pet. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County had the fourth-most homeless residents in the U.S. this year, according to a report released Monday by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. San Diego County's data was taken from the 2018 Point in Time Study, completed Jan. 26. The region had an official count of 8,576 homeless residents during the three-hour window in which the count took place, behind Seattle/King County in Washington, Los Angeles County and New York City, which topped the list with 78,676 homeless residents. According to the report, roughly 5,000 members of San Diego's homeless population are unsheltered, living on the street, in a vehicle or in a hand-built structure such as a tent. Another 3,500 homeless residents were sheltered at the time of the study, living in emergency shelters, safe havens and transitional housing. The county's count could be higher than 9,000 homeless residents, however, because the San Diego Regional Task Force on the Homeless did not count residents in recreational vehicles and some residents in shelters. County officials and homeless advocates believe the actual homeless population could total as high as 9,220, but the true count has remained opaque since the task force, which oversees the Point in Time County, announced the error May 31. Overall, California leads all other states with 129,972 homeless individuals, followed by New York at 91,897. At the time the counts were completed in January, California laid claim to 24 percent of the country's total homeless population. Combined with New York, Florida, Texas and Washington, roughly half of the country's homeless population was clustered in five states. Homelessness in California has declined in recent years despite the robust total. The state's homeless population fell by 1,560, or 1.2 percent, from 2017 to 2018 and 9,014, or 6.5 percent, from 2007 to 2018. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Some people making emergency calls to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department on Verizon phones experienced problems connecting with dispatchers for part of the day Tuesday.It was not immediately clear what was preventing 911 operators from hearing certain -- but not all -- calls made on the Verizon network, sheriff's public-affairs Lt. Karen Stubkjaer said.The regional law enforcement agency worked with the telecommunications company to determine the source of the problem, Stubkjaer said.Officials advised anyone having trouble being heard by a sheriff's dispatcher to hang up, after which the emergency operator will immediately call back.The connection problems were tending to go away on the return calls, Stubkjaer said.By mid-afternoon, the New York-based wireless carrier had identified and resolved the problem, according to Stubkjaer.A Verizon spokesperson did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the issue. 962

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials Sunday reported 3,493 COVID-19 infections as of Saturday and no new deaths, bringing the county's total to 126,465 cases and the death toll remaining at 1,280.Prior to Sunday's report, a record 3,611 COVID-19 infections were reported Friday. The cases surpassed the previous record set one week ago -- 2,867 last Friday -- by 744 new cases.Saturday's total marks the second time the number of daily infections has surpassed 3,000 as well as the 19th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases and the 12th day overall with more than 2,000 new cases.The top four-highest daily cases have all occurred in the past week, with Wednesday's 2,807 cases, Thursday's 2,604, Friday's 3,611, and Saturday's 3,493.The county on Sunday reported 1,264 hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients and an additional 320 COVID-19 patients in ICUs.There were seven new outbreaks reported, which brings the total number of outbreaks within the last seven days to 40.On Friday, an appeals court stayed a judge's decision to halt enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions against San Diego County restaurants, meaning eateries must again abide by the state's regional stay-at-home order, at least for now.Lawyers for the state filed the emergency challenge to San Diego Superior Court Judge Joel R. Wohlfeil's preliminary injunction, which was issued Wednesday in a lawsuit filed by two San Diego strip clubs Wohlfeil ultimately ruled could remain open.Wohlfeil's ruling also encompassed all restaurants in the county and all businesses that provide "restaurant service."Three justices from the Fourth District Court of Appeals, District One, read and considered the order and stayed the injunction "pending further order of this court." SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Police Department conducted a bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operation Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Officers focused on enforcing safety laws involving motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians in the Northern Division, which includes Clairemont, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, La Jolla and University City. They looked for drivers who were speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, or any other violations. They also searched for pedestrians who crossed the street illegally or failed to yield to drivers who have the right of way. Pedestrians should cross the street only in marked crosswalks or at intersections. Police have investigated several collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians during the past three years. In 2013, California had 701 pedestrian deaths, accounting for more than 23 percent of all roadway fatalities. The national average is 15 percent. Police say drivers should follow these safety tips:- Look out for bicyclists, pedestrians and scooter riders, especially at night or in bad weather.- Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or entering a crosswalk.- Stop at the crosswalk stop line to give drivers in other lanes an opportunity to see, and yield to pedestrians.- Be cautious when backing up.- Share the road with bicyclists.- California law requires at least three feet of clearance when passing a bike rider.- Look for cyclists before opening a car door or pulling out from a parking space.- Yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals.- Watch out for bike riders when making turns.Tips for pedestrians:- Cross at crosswalks or intersections, and obey signs and signals.- Walk facing traffic.- Don't text or talk on a cell phone while walking.- Make eye contact with drivers as they approach.- Wear bright clothing during the day and reflective materials, or use a flashlight, at night.- Look left-right-left before crossing a street.Tips for scooter riders:- Wear properly fitted helmets.- Riders are considered vehicle operators; they are required to obey the same rules of the road as other vehicle operators, including obeying traffic signs, signals, and lane markings.- When riding a scooter in the street, cyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic.- When riding at night, scooter riders are required to have a front light and a red reflector to the rear- No passengers are allowed on any scooter.
