(CNS) - A man was in custody Wednesday following his arrest for allegedly killing a fellow patient at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, where both men were being treated for COVID-19, authorities said.Jesse Martinez, 37, was booked on suspicion of murder and his bail was set at million, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.Martinez has been charged with murder, a hate crime enhancement, and elder abuse, according to the sheriff's department, which reported that he is scheduled to appear in Antelope Valley Court on Monday.The crime occurred about 9:45 a.m. Dec. 17 at the facility, where both men were being treated for COVID-19, the sheriff's department reported."(The victim) was housed in a two-person room inside the hospital with the suspect, who was also there receiving treatment," a sheriff's department statement said. LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) — A woman was hit and killed by a trolley car in Lemon Grove Wednesday.The woman was hit by a San Diego MTS trolley at about 3:45 p.m. near the Lemon Grove Avenue and Massachusetts Ave. stop, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Deputies say the woman was dragged by the trolley and later died.The cause of the deadly crash was under investigation.The MTS Orange Line was closed between the Encanto/62nd and Spring Street Stations due to the police investigation. Buses will be used between the two stations to bridge travelers to their next stop during the closure, MTS tweeted. MTS says the eastbound Orange Line will not depart from the Courthouse Station at 5 p.m., and instead will start from 12th and Imperial at 5:11 p.m. Riders waiting to catch that train should instead take the Blue Line to 12th and Imperial to transfer to the Orange Line to continue eastbound.No further information was immediately available. 968

LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver while out jogging Monday night. The driver, identified as Michael Woodfill, was driving a Chevy work truck on North Woodside Avenue, east of Riverford Road around 6:30 p.m. when he began to drift off the road and hit a chain link fence, according to California Highway Patrol. It was at this point that Woodfill then attempted to correct the vehicle. In doing so, he overcorrected - sending the truck across the eastbound and westbound lanes. The truck continued moving north, where it hit and killed the female jogger before going down a dirt embankment and overturning. CHP said the female jogger suffered major injuries in the crash and was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital where she later died of her injuries. Woodfill stayed on scene after the crash and it was there that officers determined that he was under the influence of alcohol. The 46-year-old was arrested for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. LEMON GROVE (CNS) - A man was jailed for stealing a deputy's patrol car at the Lemon Grove Patrol Station, sheriff's officials said Sunday. Matthew Brian Porter, 44, was arrested Saturday evening and booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of evading deputies, theft of an emergency vehicle and fleeing police on a highway in the wrong direction, all felonies, according to jail records. At about 9 p.m., a deputy at the Lemon Grove Patrol Station was unloading his patrol car at the end of his shift, according to Lt. Mike Rand of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. A man then got into the deputy's patrol car and drove away. Deputies spotted the vehicle leaving the station and began a pursuit. But they lost sight of it as it drove eastbound on Broadway. A resident called 911 to report the abandoned patrol car in the 3500 block of Grove Street. Deputies located the vehicle and detained Porter, who allegedly admitted to stealing the patrol car. Porter's bail on the evading charge was set at ,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday. 1080

(AP) - Lake Elsinore’s Walker Canyon, site of a magnificent super bloom of poppies, reopened Monday after “Disneyland size crowds” overwhelmed the small Southern California city, creating what officials called a “miserable situation.” Social media photos showed heavy traffic on Interstate 15 near Lake Street and Nichols Road Sunday, where many visitors stopped and parked illegally to enjoy the flower fields. The California Highway Patrol issued a Sig Alert Monday and shut down the Lake Street offramp to control the situation. Despite the start of the work week, the number of visitors remained high Monday due to spring break, according to Nicole Dailey, assistant to the Lake Elsinore city manager. Dailey was not able to estimate the amount of people traveling to the flower fields. Four people were hurt over the weekend, Dailey said.
