DEL MAR (CNS) - Border Patrol officials Friday announced that 21 arrests were made earlier this week stemming from a foiled human smuggling operation off the coast of Del Mar.Border Patrol agents spotted a "suspicious vessel" near Dog Beach at about 3 a.m. Tuesday, which was later identified as a panga boat dropping off 16 Mexican nationals.In anticipation of a landing at Camino Del Mar, agents arrived to find a group of people clad in life jackets running toward three vehicles, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.One vehicle was stopped near the scene, while the other two sped off, the Border Patrol said.A 68-year-old U.S. citizen behind the wheel of a 2003 Mazda minivan was arrested along with eight passengers who were Mexican nationals. Two other vehicles were pursued to a hotel in Carlsbad, where the drivers -- both U.S. citizens -- were arrested with eight Mexican nationals who were passengers.According to the Border Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard officials intercepted the panga boat as it was attempting to depart the area, and two Mexican national men aboard were arrested.Border Patrol officials said five people will face human smuggling charges in connection with the incident, while one boat passenger will face charges for re-entry after prior removal. DENVER (KMGH) -- You could call it the very definition of the old expression of being in "the right place at the right time" when several emergency room doctors saved a man's life at a Denver sandwich shop.The doctors happened to be in town for a conference of ER doctors. They were on a lunch break Monday afternoon at Snarf's on Champa when the man walked in and collapsed."He went into cardiac arrest. His heart stopped beating, stopped pumping blood," said Dr. David Levy. Levy was alongside several of his former residents and a pair of emergency physicians from New Jersey, who all jumped into action."We did chest compressions. We shocked him with the [defibrillator]," he explained.The man was without a pulse three separate times, but the team was able to revive it in time for medics to arrive and transport him to the hospital."Everyone expects this to happen in a hospital in a controlled environment, but when you’re there, and it happens on the floor of a restaurant it takes you by surprise," Levy said. "He would have died if no one was there to intervene."As of Monday night, the man had survived the ordeal and was being treated in the intensive care unit.And what did this group of hero doctors do next?"We washed our hands, sat down, and finished our lunch," Levy said.Levy would go on to win three separate awards that night as part of the convention, the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians. 1478

DEL MAR, Calif., (KGTV)— “Enter at your own risk”— That’s what the signs at Del Mar Beach say after at least three shark sightings in as many days. There was also one sighting off the Coronado Coast around noon Wednesday.Del Mar is precisely the escape Kathleen Pierce and her family were after. “We have been suffering in the hundred-degree weather in Temecula so we thought we’d come down to the beach,” Pierce said. It was a great plan until she saw the warning sign at the beach entrance. ADVISORY: SHARK SIGHTED. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.“I saw the sign, and I had to pause,” Pierce said. But they jumped into the water anyway, because she figured, the likelihood of actually coming up onto a shark was low. But a few minutes in, her son spotted a few. “When the wave was about to crash, I just saw all of them swimming in a group,” her son Drew said. Drew said they were only about three to four feet long, so he ignored them. His friend was frightened and ran to the shore. “The sharks that were seen off of Del Mar, based on the size, we know that they were juveniles,” Research Biologist at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, Heidi Dewar said. Dewar said if the sharks are under six feet, they are juveniles. They eat smaller fish, so they pose no threat to people. It is their parents we need to worry about. “If I saw a sub-adult or anything over 6 feet, I would probably personally get out of the water,” Dewar laughed.
