Rachel Peterson was already having a tough time of it when she called a supermarket chain's pharmacy to get a prescription filled. Then the pharmacist made things worse.Peterson says back in July a pharmacist at a Meijer pharmacy in Petoskey, Michigan, refused to fill her prescription for a drug to treat her miscarriage because of his religious beliefs. She's working with the American Civil Liberties Union to change Meijer's policy and is willing to go to court if need be to keep what happened to her from happening to another woman. 545

Republican Rep. Diane Black of Tennessee recently cited pornography as a contributing factor to gun violence in schools."How many of you when you were in school ever had an experience where a kid came to school with a gun?... Never happened. So we say, 'Why?' ... Why do we see kids being so violent? What's out there? What makes them do that?" Black said during a listening session with local pastors last week, according to audio HuffPost obtained and posted Tuesday.Black, who is also running for governor in her state, went on to list "deterioration of family," violent movies and pornography as what's led to school shootings."It's available on the shelf when you walk in the grocery store. Yeah, you have to reach up to get it, but there's pornography there," Black says in the audio. "All of this is available without parental guidance."She adds, "And I think that's a big part of the root cause, that we see so many young people that have mental illness get caught in these places."In the audio, Black does not detail what it is about pornography that she believes contributes to school shootings."I think the context is pretty clear," Black's campaign spokesman Chris Hartline told CNN Tuesday. "Diane believes the breakdown of families and communities plays a significant role in instances of school violence."Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts criticized Black's comments, writing on?Twitter?that "despite all of the data and experts at her disposal, (Black) chooses to blame 'grocery store pornography' for school shootings. And she doesn't mean the magazines that glorify guns." 1615

President Trump's Treasury secretary says most middle income Americans will get a tax break under the Republican plan brewing in Congress. But he stopped short of saying that break would be for all of them."By simplifying the code, we're putting everybody on a level playing field," Steven Mnuchin told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" on Sunday. "For most people -- and, again, it may not be 100 percent, but by far the majority -- both the House and Senate version provide middle-income tax relief."Mnuchin said that assessment is based on "hundreds if not thousands" of tests the Treasury has run on the bills.Mnuchin's comments came after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell walked back his claim?that "nobody in the middle class is going to get a tax increase" under the Senate's version of the reform plan.On Friday, McConnell told the New York Times that he "misspoke."Mnuchin also defended the tax plan from critics, including Larry Summers, the Treasury secretary under President Bill Clinton. Summers called Mnuchin's tax cut estimates "irresponsible."Mnuchin on Sunday called those comments "unfortunate.""There are lots and lots of economists that come out and support our claims," he said. "We've been completely transparent. Different models will show different things."Mnuchin added that a middle-class tax hike is not what Trump wants. He said lawmakers will "fine tune" the plan before it heads to Trump for a signature.Tapper also asked Mnuchin about Trump's?claim?that the tax reform bill will bring "the largest tax cuts in the history of this country.""We've tried to find a way that this is true, but it's not," Tapper said, pointing to research that shows the tax break would rank, at most, as the 3rd largest in American history.Mnuchin qualified the president's statement, saying, "This will be the largest change since President Reagan."He also singled out the proposal to slice the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20%."If that's not the biggest tax cut to make our businesses competitive, what is?" Mnuchin said. 2102

PRINCETON, N.J. — Princeton University has announced plans to remove the name of former President Woodrow Wilson from its public policy school because of his segregationist views, reversing a decision the Ivy League school made four years ago to retain the name.University president Christopher Eisgruber said in a letter to the school community Saturday that the board of trustees had concluded that “Wilson’s racist views and policies make him an inappropriate namesake” for Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs and the residential college.Eisgruber said the trustees reversed their April 2016 decision in light of the recent killings of George Floyd and others. Floyd's death sparked weeklong protests against systemic racism and police brutality. 776
