SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- County leaders and the American Red Cross are being forced to change fire evacuation plans due to coronavirus.According to a news release, residents under evacuation will now be housed at hotels or motels, or multiple shelters with less than 50 people instead of traditional shelters.The Red Cross says it’s working with nearly 100 lodging businesses to make rooms available during a crisis.“We’re entering the riskiest part of the wildfire season while still being in the middle of an unprecedented health crisis,” said county Supervisor Dianne Jacob. “That is forcing us to rethink and retool our disaster-planning efforts.”The County Office of Emergency Management is also asking people to include face coverings and hand sanitizer in their evacuation kits.“As we head into our warmer months, we need all resources available,” said County Supervisor Jim Desmond. “The question isn’t if, but when. We know fires are a part of living in San Diego, but putting in the preparation ahead of time is the best tactic we can use.”The Red Cross also says packaged meals will be provided instead of the usual cafeteria-style dining in light of the virus.“Disasters require flexibility and planning for a number of variables – especially in the COVID-19 environment,” says Sean Mahoney, Regional CEO of the American Red Cross Southern California Region. “As wildfire season approaches, the goal of the Red Cross remains to provide comfort and support to anyone in need after a disaster, and we are prepared to do just that.” 1545

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A City Heights elementary school was placed on lockdown Wednesday morning following reports of gunfire in the area.San Diego Police responded to the call of shots fired near Colina del Sol Park at 5319 Orange Avenue just after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.Fay Elementary - located across the street from the park - was placed on a precautionary lockdown, according to police. The lockdown was lifted within an hour.Two individuals were detained following the reports, but police did not confirm whether they were associated with the shooting. Police did say they are searching for one more individual.Police recovered shell casings at the scene, but would not say how many were recovered. No injuries have been reported.SDPD officers were on the scene Wednesday afternoon investigating.  840

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A discrimination lawsuit filed by a former high-ranking employee against UC San Diego has reached a settlement agreement.Jean Ford served as the Associate Vice Chancellor for UC San Diego Health Sciences Advancement. In June 2019, she sued the UC Regents and Chancellor Pradeep Khosla, alleging age and gender discrimination, as well as wrongful termination.Team 10 first reported the lawsuit in June 2019.Ford came to San Diego in 2015 after a decade at Columbia University Medical Center, according to a biography previously on the UC San Diego website.The lawsuit alleged that she was subjected to discrimination and harassment by Chancellor Kholsa because she was a woman over the age of 40, then retaliated against for complaining about illegal conduct. The complaint alleged that Kholsa promoted a younger and less experienced man to supervise Ford.“My client has been a successful fundraiser for 25 years,” said attorney Kristina Larsen last year. “She was recruited to UCSD… and UCSD Health had their most successful fundraising year of almost 0 million under Ms. Ford’s leadership.”The UC Regents recently approved the settlement agreement, although the terms were not disclosed.In a statement, Larsen told Team 10:“Former UCSD Assistant Vice Chancellor Jean Ford, The Regents of the University of California, and UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla have amicably resolved the claims between the parties, with none of the three admitting any wrongdoing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A federal judge has ordered the San Diego Police Department to stop citing people for living in their vehicles.The decision comes after a lawsuit was filed against the city by a group of homeless people and their advocates.On Tuesday, United States District Judge Anthony Battaglia agreed with the plaintiff’s argument that the city’s municipal code was too vague in defining what constitutes habitation of a vehicle.Tristia Bauman, an attorney with the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty which helped work on the case told 10News, “we are very happy and pleased that the judge understood what we were arguing.”However, that was only one half of the lawsuit. The other half targeted the city’s municipal ordinance that outlaws RV parking from 2-6a.m. Known as the Nighttime RV Ordinance, or Oversized Vehicle Ordinance (OVO), the judge denied the request to enjoin it, saying the same argument did not apply.In the decision, Battaglia wrote “while the court sympathies that this Ordinance leaves Plaintiffs with nowhere to park between these hours and is decidedly unfair, the law is not ambiguous, unclear or vague in any way.”A spokesperson for city attorney Mara Elliot declined to comment beyond saying they “will review the ruling and advise our client.”An early neutral evaluation conference had been scheduled for Thursday with all the parties. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Symphony canceled the remainder of its 2020 season today as COVID-19-related closures drag on, with some performances canceled through May 2021.All Jacobs Masterworks concerts at Copley Symphony Hall at Jacobs Music Center have been canceled through Dec. 31. In addition, all special concerts and all concerts in the Broadway at the Jacobs, Jazz at the Jacobs, Fox Film and Family concert series have been canceled through May 2021.As a result of the cancellations and to simplify the ticketing process, the company will automatically move any 2020/21 subscription into the 2021/22 season.
